finally grew the fuck up and now i literally cannot stop cringing at my own profile. i'll check in from time to time, i guess. i'm more interested in music now. The comments on my lists may contain spoilers. Anime I don't wanna forget to watch: Black★Rock Shooter, Nurarihyon no Mago, PSYCHO-PASS, Kobato., RahXephon, Kumichou Musume to Sewagakari, Aikatsu! RATING LEGEND: tl;dr: 10 - marriage 9 - ahn〜 8 - woahh 7 - oooooh 6 - oh yeah 5 - yeah yeah 4 - yeah nah 3 - oopsies 2 - uhhhh 1 - what's a safety trigger? anyway, My ratings are heavily subjective and personal, but I don't leave objectivity completely out of my sense of critique either. With subjectivity obviously come a bunch of biases I have, such as towards certain genres, studios, adaptations of games I've played, etc. This rating system doesn't at all apply to manga. I don't critique most manga I read because I can't critique something I'm not passionate about. It's also partially to make sure I don't end up hating the medium, lol. 10 - Unforgettably great and almost, if not completely, perfect. It would boggle my mind to even try to think of why this anime is anything less than a wondrous masterclass in every aspect. Phenomenal every way you slice it, and a life-changing experience untouchable by anything. My absolute favorites. 9 - Literally a dream. Pure brilliance and unparalleled in its aspects. There was everything to love about this anime, and even if I had a qualm or two, they were most definitely drowned out by the mixture of an incredible story, impeccable characterization, intelligent writing, perfect execution, and excellent vision. Probably a part of my favorites. 8 - Now THIS is what I'm talkin' about. Outright superb in most of its departments, and left me completely dumbstruck by the end of it due to how amazing it was. Usually, I don't have any problems or complaints with an 8, but it probably only got an 8 because it was merely dull in some places. Maaaaaybe a part of the latter half of my favorites? 7 - Seriously awesome. Like, this is where I start to actually love this medium for what it is. Most of its departments, if not all of them, scored positive marks, and it excels in many of them. I loved this anime, because there were so many things to like, that it left a great impact and was super memorable. Not quite a favorite, but definitely a close hit as one. 6 - Surpassed a lot of my expectations and exceled in at least one aspect. I give a 6 to any anime I genuinely liked the entirety of, but that didn't exactly hit any spots, or that did hit many spots, but was sorely dragged down by some problems I had with it. Think of this as the actual "good" score. 5 - The bare minimum for a "good" anime. At least half of the anime had to have scored positive marks in its departments. I guess it's a more refined version of what a 4 could've been? I don't know—not much I have to say about this one. 4 - Okay, now we're almost there. A 4 might be something I consider as bad, but that doesn't necessarily mean it didn't have redeeming qualities. Usually, I give an anime a 4 if it had really great ideas or was just really strong in a particular department, but failed in a bunch of others. I genuinely liked a part of the anime, and so it undoubtedly deserves credit where it flourishes. Its good qualities were still insufficient enough to fit the score of 5, but I could genuinely respect a part of it. 3 - Probably either something that greatly irked me in a bunch of ways, or that simply was a complete nothing burger. If it irked me, chances are it probably lacked flavor in its characters and/or story, and if it was a complete nothing burger...well, it was so utterly boring and forgettable that it deserves a low score such as a 3. Probably wasn't entirely "terrible", but definitely was far from "good" or even "meh". 2 - Really, really dead in terms of any good qualities, and it probably lacked a significant amount of, if not completely lacked, core fundamentals for a "good" anime. Close to nothing was enjoyable, but in the end, it most likely wasn't the worst thing I'd ever experienced. 1 - FUCKING BURN IT. Awful beyond description every way you slice it. Nothing, and I quite literally mean NOTHING, served as a redeeming quality or even was passable. A 1 scored negative marks in every department, and I probably treated and viewed it with the lowest level of respect. I'm a little dumbo and don't know how to get this thing working properly so it's most likely outdated. :P Looks like MAL added a feature where you can see your statistics just like the MALgraph shows, so there's basically no use for this now other than for it to look cool. While I'd say it certainly overstayed its welcome, I wouldn't say eps 18-28 ruined the anime. It introduces a BUNCH of characters that will return in S2 to be further explored in the future and begins establishing the viewers' connection to them early on. Additionally, it serves as a gauge for the viewer of Fern's current status in the larger mage society. We get to see the stark contrast between how Frieren operates and how modern mages operate. I can't see how it throws out any of the narrative's themes. Because, like, introducing characters that clash with existing ones in interesting ways is the primary way to create a good character-based narrative??? It's important to have these characters because they provide valuable insight into our own primary cast through their interactions. (Not to mention the WORLD BUILDING! Love some good world building and will take any excuse to have more insight into the rules of a world's magic systems and established lore)
I'm not trying to pressure you into changing your stance btw. I understand how a sudden shift like that could cause disinterest. I just don't get how it ruins the previous half of the anime. Frieren spends a lot of time teaching Fern how to defend herself with magic, so I don't see how making the attacker human changes anything. It gives a chance to show Serie's view on magic.
I'm glad you aren't like the other people on the Frieren reviews who don't understand narratives though. ok byebye
Don't worry about it, I get it. I'm impatient as hell too so I can share that sentiment with you. Take all the time you need to reply, I'll most likely be here chronically online as always either way xD
