I always wondered, are these *actual* numbers? I mean, about 6,000 people buy Saki DVDs, and only about 2,200 people buy One Piece DVDs?
If that is the case, the anime DVD industry seems to be kinda small, huh?
Yes. They only profit because the prices are amazingly high - like 80 dollars for 2 episodes of K-ON!.
Wow, that's expensive. And with prices that high, no wonder they don't sell more copies.
And now I can picture how big Summer Wars sales are.

As for BD sales, I'd bet they were a lot higher than 10k, probably closer to 100k. Wanna bet? :)
More like a bet. 54k is a bit higher than I expected - confessed than 10k is the low range of my speculation. ;P

MADHOUSE - and any other anime studios - never put directly money into series so directly.

Yes. Summer Wars, unlike Evangelion, Bakemonogatari or Macross Frontier isn't focused on otakus, the people who buy the BDs. See Ponyo case for an example. ;)

Didn't Madhouse make enough money off Summer Wars' theater run? I seriously doubt they need to depend on DVD/BD sales too but...

Japanese animation relies in all those Planning Commitees, in which companies like ANIPLEX, Pony Cannon, GENCO and others do their business - in partnership with animation studios, TV stations, manga publishing houses, toy companies...

Despite being family-orientated, I bet that 10,000 Blue-Rays, at the very least, of Summer Wars were sold.

It's good to see Saki up there, maybe we'll get another season in a few years. More mahjong is always a good thing.

well the price for Limited Edition BD is freaking expensive, about 100 USD per each, no wonder we not see the BD Dominating this time. but i'm still predicting the number of sales can raise to 70-80k.
at least that will beat Bakemonogatari sales :P
