No surprise that Summer Wars is dominating this week, with all of the awards it's won. I just hope it can maintain good sales for at least 2-3 months, and hopefully more. Otherwise, MadHouse could be in big trouble, and that won't be good for anyone in the industry.

I just hope it's at least partially that good that many people seem to think. *went to download Summer Wars*
Something tells me it's just a fanboy-bait without any actual substance.

You should'nt watch summer wars with much expectation. It's nothing new; just rehash of something that has been already repeated. I only see summer wars as a great 'family' movie. It is entertaining, but if you are expecting something very innovative, you will definitely be disappointed.

Again, this movie's entertainment doubles when you watch it with your family, and I think that's the intention of Hosoda for this whole movie.

Didn't Madhouse make enough money off Summer Wars' theater run? I seriously doubt they need to depend on DVD/BD sales too but...

It's good to see Saki up there, maybe we'll get another season in a few years. More mahjong is always a good thing.

Looking at the spring season, I don't think that RAINBOW or Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei are going to do very well for them from a DVD sales point of view, even if they both turn out to be great, as was the case with Kaiba and Kaiji (which were well-recieved, but still flopped in terms of sales) so they will be relying on Summer Wars, Iron Man and possibly Mai Mai Miracle DVD sales (I don't know how well MMM did in theatres) to do well to get them through the spring season at least. I guess that isn't so bad, as they have that Trigun movie on the way as well.

MADHOUSE - and any other anime studios - never put directly money into series so directly.

Japanese animation relies in all those Planning Commitees, in which companies like ANIPLEX, Pony Cannon, GENCO and others do their business - in partnership with animation studios, TV stations, manga publishing houses, toy companies...

Despite being family-orientated, I bet that 10,000 Blue-Rays, at the very least, of Summer Wars were sold.

Maybe not, but if their anime consistently fail commercially, those other companies will stop producing their series eventually. That's pretty much what happened to Gonzo, although maybe they were putting more money into their own shows than others and expanding in the wrong areas.

As for BD sales, I'd bet they were a lot higher than 10k, probably closer to 100k. Wanna bet? :)

Yes. Summer Wars, unlike Evangelion, Bakemonogatari or Macross Frontier isn't focused on otakus, the people who buy the BDs. See Ponyo case for an example. ;)

Wow that's really good for Summer Wars, $18 million box office, $4.5 million for blu-ray, and $2.25 million for DVD (in USD).

I always wondered, are these *actual* numbers? I mean, about 6,000 people buy Saki DVDs, and only about 2,200 people buy One Piece DVDs?

If that is the case, the anime DVD industry seems to be kinda small, huh?

More like a bet. 54k is a bit higher than I expected - confessed than 10k is the low range of my speculation. ;P

Yes. They only profit because the prices are amazingly high - like 80 dollars for 2 episodes of K-ON!.

Wow, that's expensive. And with prices that high, no wonder they don't sell more copies.

And now I can picture how big Summer Wars sales are.

well the price for Limited Edition BD is freaking expensive, about 100 USD per each, no wonder we not see the BD Dominating this time. but i'm still predicting the number of sales can raise to 70-80k.
at least that will beat Bakemonogatari sales :P
