A stage event at Jump Festa 2020 on Saturday announced that a new anime based on Riku Sanjou and Koji Inada's Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken manga is in the works. Toei Animation will be producing the series that will premiere in Fall 2020.

Synopsis
A long time ago, there was a valiant swordsman who came to be known simply as "the hero." There was a demon who has caused people suffering. The hero and his companions arrived to challenge the demon to a battle and by combining their powers, the battle was brought swift conclusion. With no one around to cause trouble, the island became a quiet place where everyone could live together in peace.

Several years later, the demon is revived. Our present-day protagonist, Dai, lives on a remote island in the southern seas and dreams of becoming a great hero. When he hears about the demon's revival, Dai and his friends take it upon themselves to stop him and the evil force that revived him. Along the way, Dai discovers the identity of "the hero," the truth behind the evil force who revived the demon, and Dai's own hidden powers that surface in times of peril. (Source: MU, edited)

Based on Square Enix's Dragon Quest games on Famicom, Sanjou and Inada's manga was first serialized in Weekly Shounen Jump in 1989 as a two-chapter series. It was then followed by a three-chapter sequel before it became a regular addition to the magazine. The manga ended in 1996 with 37 compiled volumes.

Toei Animation adapted the manga into a 46-episode TV anime that aired between October 1991 and September 1992. During the anime's broadcast, three short movies were also produced in July 1991, March 1992, and July 1992.

I LOVE this trend of animating older manga. I never finished it, but the stuff I read was really, really good.

If it does well, hopefully this leads to a reboot of the author's other manga, Beet the Vandel Buster.

Never follow this series but I'm surprised the anime got a remake.

So who will voice Dai since his voice actor has already passed away back in December 2018?

This came out of nowhere. Glad they're turning to old mangas for new shows.

I loved reading Dai

They're bringing back some old obscure anime lately, who ever expected Wataru of all things to be revived.

OMG, is this real life? I never expected this to get a remake. Hopefully we can get a full adaptation this time. It's going to be really interesting seeing a modern take on a 90s classic.

Yay! More remakes! I'm currently still watching the original, but I never imagined that the anime will get a remake one day.

Same thing!
Maybe they were testing the waters with that DQ movie?

Not really. Both the movie and this are too close to do that.

Is 2020 the year of the remakes or something?

The trailer itself makes me want a "looks like an outdated power-fantasy", but I want to keep believing.
