Novel 'Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome' Receives Anime Film

Film production and distribution company TOHO announced on Thursday that Tomihiko Morimi's novel Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome (The Night is Short, Walk on Girl) will receive an anime film, which is scheduled to open in theaters in Japan on April 7, 2017. The lead staff members returning from the Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (The Tatami Galaxy) TV anime are as follows.

Synopsis
A black haired girl is walking around the streets of Kyoto, from the night scene of Pontocho to a second-hand book fair in Shimogamo, then off to a college fair. The main character that has a romantic feeling for her secretly follows her around and looks for the opportunities to run into her in a manner that seems like a coincidence. Unfortunately for him, she is not interested in love yet so she does not notice his feelings. What waits these two characters are crazy incidents caused by individuals such as a person who introduces himself as a Japanese mythical creature Tengu, the god of second-hand book or the money lender in a three story vehicle. Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome was serialized in novel magazine Shousetsu Yasei Jidai for four chapters between September 2005 and November 2006 and subsequently published by Kadokawa Shoten later that month. The novel won the 20th Yamamoto Shuugorou Award and placed second in the 4th Japan Booksellers' Award in 2007. A manga adaptation drawn by Ranmaru Kotone was serialized in Shounen Ace magazine between July 2007 and January 2009.

Wow these are fantastic news. Two Yuasa projects for next year is just amazing. Didn't expect this movie to happen at all.

“For those of you who are unfamiliar with Morimi’s other novels, Jurojin, or Rihaku (his real name), is a major reoccuring character in Morimi’s novels. The events in the novel 夜は短し歩けよ乙女 are centered around this very guy. This novel also contains reoccuring characters from his other novels such as Master Higuchi, Hanuki, Aijima (The Tatami Galaxy), and the young master from Chitose-ya (A part of Friday Fellows in The Eccentric Family).

I love the TG art/design/music and Morimi's writing, but I wish they had put some distance between this and Tatami Galaxy ):

To celebrate the movie premiere, Yojouhan will get selective rebroadcast starting January 8, 2017 and Scenario Art will be singing cover of theme songs. It was announced via Noitamina Lineup 2017 via Line Live just now (which the news will be posted soon).

The producers may not be able to milk Yuasa up, but they can certainly milk Gen Hoshino. He's a hit recently.

Well it's basically same setting, similar character design and different cast, also some reappearing characters from tatami like higuchi and ryoko.

Hyped as a Yuusa fan but this will be a long wait for BD

Oh boy, this is some great news indeed! More Yuasa is always very welcome. The anime industry could always use more talent like him to break up the monotony.

(And I really should get around to finishing Tatami Galaxy...)

how is it milking when yuasa's projects (tatami included) make basically no money? i admit that im a little disappointed that it's not something entirely new for him, but i'm certain yuasa and his team have a good reason for adapting this story in particular
