As expected, DAL is still great as always. Not to mention the 2nd spirit cover.

I hope with the movie and novel's success, they will adapt chapter 8-11 for season 3. Just hoping it's not badly animated like season 2.

I'll keep fingers crossed for MT anime adaption in the near future...

MT selling that much for a series that just went from a WN to LN is good. Although not as many sales as others (may have to do with the lack of an anime adaption, promotions, the books are thicker than your average LN but more expensive as well). But it was a popular WN so I'm sure that it will sell strongly in the future once more people know about it. As of right now, the sales for MT as far as I can see is steadily increasing.

And Overlord hitting 100k+ is extremely good too. There are plenty of quality LNs that don't make the top seller list.

Thnx for the explanation. Maybe a anime will be possible for it?

Maybe way later in the future.

Although, seeing some of the LN adaptions so far, I don't know if I would ever want one for Mushoku Tensei.

If we do get one, I hope it will be either Madhouse or A-1 Pictures that gets it.

I just finish volume 6 and will soon start volume 7. Is these sales good? I don't follow the LN sales so I don't know what's considered to be good or bad sales. Also what series has sold the most since oricon started to collect data? Is 100k that overlord is selling makes it a big seller? Looking at the list it seems 100k isn't a hard feat to reach since a lot of series is selling close to that mark.

Furthermore, none of the Overlord volumes even came close to selling as much as this bunko threshold. The only series with an airing anime that is even on the same set of rankings as Overlord is Monogatari, so even if every series with an anime was somehow breaking all records for sales boosts it wouldnt push Overlord off.

I don't get what you mean here. I'm not really well versed in this "specific ranking" that light novels get. Do you mean that Rakudai volumes needed to sell more than the Bunko threshold (6,811) rather than the 4,311 I see in the general ranking?

In the actual data, there is no "general ranking" - that's just MAL putting together novels from all the different rankings into one list.

The data comes from 4 different rankings:
- the bunko ranking, which is the top 50 bunko format releases
- the book ranking, which is the top 50 non-bunko releases
- the "literature" ranking, which is the top 20 out of a selection from the book ranks
- the light novel ranking, which is a top 20 of all volumes Oricon considers light novels. It isn't listed as it almost never gives any information that isn't in one of the other rankings.

Of these four, the literature ranking almost always has the lowest threshold, and the light novel ranking almost always has the highest threshold. Whichever has the lowest threshold of the rankings that a novel is eligible for is the amount that it needs to sell to appear on the rankings. Overlord is eligible for the book, literature and light novel rankings, the lowest threshold of which is the 4311 for the literature rankings, which is thus the amount it needed to sell to get on the rankings. Rakudai is eligible for the bunko and light novel rankings, of which the lowest threshold is the 6800 for the bunko ranking.

I think your perception has become skewed by the fact that we got, in consecutive seasons, 2 of the 4 biggest light novel sales boosts from the last 4 years...

Possible. Before this spring, the last time I followed these light novel rankings on a regular basis was Spring 2014 and back then, NGNL, Mahouka and Kagerou Days volumes iirc where all getting decent to impressive boosts and appearing on the list all in the SAME season which made me assume it's a regular thing.

The light novel anime adaptations that have given >100k sales boosts to volume 1 of the novel during its time in the main rankings are:
Sword Art Online (Summer 2012)
No Game No Life (Spring 2014)
Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou Ka (Spring 2015)
Overlord (Summer 2015)

That's it. Mahouka's boost was 36k. Kagerou Daze's boost is hard to measure as the volume actually entered the rankings not from anime boost but from the boost from volume 5 coming out. It was at most 86k, and may have got more than half of that even if it weren't for the anime. AmaBuri was the next biggest boost of 2014, with 42k sales boost.

In 2013 the biggest boost of the entire year was hataraku maou-sama with 67k for volume 1.

Winter and Summer 2014 both had just a single week for a single volume in terms of visible anime boost - and neither of them sold the amount needed for this week's threshold (furthermore, the former was alongside a new volume being released, and the latter was... well, Sword Art Online).

Exactly. BEcause overlord aren't bunkobon, it's easier to remain in the ranking. As you can see on the separated list, the cut off is 4300 for tankoubon against 6800 for bunkobon this week, which is a huge difference. If overlord was published in bunkobon, with the same sales, it wouldn't appear in the ranking at all.
Then again bunkobon are cheaper than tankoubon, so if Overlord was published in bunkobon, maybe the sales would be a bit higher and appear anyway. Who knows.

MT definately deserves more sales. I know that the web novel is extremely popular but so far I have all the MT volumes minus vol 7 and vol 8. Gotta get them when I have the chance.

Oh thats pretty neat, I'll have to order all of them as a bundle once they're out......1 day.I do wonder what are the chances of it getting licensed in english though.

Yup indeed.

If MT gets licensed in english, I would restart my collection all over again.

But ya, MT volumes are a bit more expensive than your average LN (since it is bigger as well).

It is around 1200 yen a volume.

I was slowly reading down the list and saw Twintails and I was like "Ohh, that's unexpected."

And then saw Mushoku Tensei and I was fucking hyped and almost fell off.

Since I'm a huge fan of the series I always wanted MT to sell well, seeing this list makes me happy beyond measure.

Well kinda similar thing happened to me.Not to that degree but saw Only Moe Online, was like huh so it actually sells that much and suddenly....FINALLY Mushoku Tensei XD

Imo its definitely the best series in its genre,or rather even beyond that.Definitely deserves way more sales.Anyways can't w8 how the other volumes chart,or screw that I need moar illustrations.

Ya. Saw OSO and was decently suprised as well since I see it all the time since the same translator also translates AmA.

MT definately deserves more sales. I know that the web novel is extremely popular but so far I have all the MT volumes minus vol 7 and vol 8. Gotta get them when I have the chance.

Need illustrations of grown up Eris and Badigadi.

So none of the shows from this season have managed to have their backlog volumes rank so far which is probably why Overlord volumes are still there. Pretty underwhelming season (sales wise).

Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry volume 1 ranked on w/c 5th October

Both weeks since then have had extremely high thresholds - I'm pretty sure this week has the highest bunko threshold of the year so far, and last week was the highest since May. Even the last full week of December last year, which is typically the most competitive week of the entire year, had a lower bunko threshold than this week does.

Also, a sales boost sufficient to get on this week's rankings is something that only happens to a couple of series a year. None of them being on there is not a sign of poor sales.

If you want to see the boosts they're getting look on the series rankings I posted (although bear in mind that some, most notably Shomin Sample, had volumes out recently). Those are some genuinely decent boosts there.

I think your perception has become skewed by the fact that we got, in consecutive seasons, 2 of the 4 biggest light novel sales boosts from the last 4 years...
