It is, just MAL hasn't been including it. Volume 1 was 13th on the bunko rankings for the week covered in this thread (selling 10974 copies), as can be seen on the Oricon website.

True enough, but I would expect that at the sort of price level we're talking about (and among the sort of buyers we're talking about - most of whom would already know they like the series before purchase) the demand would be relatively inelastic.

I've seen a lot of people praising this, it might very well end up being the very first LN I'll read in months (if the translation is decent...)

and be on the list regardless :P

I doubt it. Even the top volume there would need to sell about 50% more.

I think it was you or Zefris who told me last week that Overlord volumes (tankobon) cost 1080 yen while Bunkobon cost 600-700 yen. This means that the total consumer spending of Overlord is worth that of a bunko ln selling over 50% more units. So with the same consumer spending (this is of course a big assumption), a bunko format Overlord would still make the list. The Numbers usually report consumer spending in their charts, I wonder why Oricon dosn't do it for DVDs/Blurays/CD singles/albums/manga//light novels individually (the closest I've seen is the Top 20 overall sales, no seperate list).

When was the last time the bunko threshold was sub-3000?

I remember it being in the 3000s a few times, but not below that - at least not off the top of my head (there have been times when we had data for sub-3k sales of bunko releases but they were when Oricon's light novel rankings listed on their website weren't working properly and were showing things that were well outside the top 20 that they were supposed to report. It went below 2k quite a few times then as well).

The number of new (as in not re-release) bunko light novels due out this week (unless something gets brought forward, which usually happens to something at least) is actually just 3* - 2 from Ponycan books light novel series and 1 from Sakura no Mori bunko. Furthermore, it's looking like none of these three have any real chance of getting on the rankings.

That said, remember that Kadokawa's releases only came out on Saturday, so they will be getting more sales during this week than they did last. Only 2 of them made it into this week's rankings but next week that could be considerably higher. Based on past sales I would guess that they might sell about double what they sold in this set of rankings in the next one.
We could even see Kokuhaku Yokou Renshuu re-ranking - it's been kicking around the low hundreds in the weekly rankings all year and seems to be currently getting more sales on the daily rankings than any of the series with airing anime.
If Dengeki Bunko volumes end up coming out early then that could also completely destroy the effects of this week being such a quiet one for releases.

*All eternity bunko, poplar bunko and VG bunko "releases" this week are actually rereleases, as is Hoshikuzu Eiyuuden from ponycan books light novel series.

Looking forward to the next weekly chart because there are only less than 10 novels being released between 2-8 Nov. Judging from the results only few from this weekly chart (26 Oct - 1 Nov) will make the next one again. So there is a very good chance the cut-off for next chart will be much lower. There have been some times that the cut-off for bunko novels was below 3k.

So hopefully we get to see the novels with currently airing anime to make the next chart. We might see earlier volumes of Rakudai, Asterisk and Sakurako-san make it.

It's stale and uninventive in the same way as a composer's use of a piano or guitar (or in this day and age a synthesizer) as the instrument that their music is played on is stale and uninventive.

Randomly clicked on some of these titles and about 80% of them turned out to be "reincarnated/thrown into another world" stories.
This is ridiculous. 5 of them even have "isekai" right in the title.
Apparently changing the characters names is enough to convince/fool(?) the target audience to read the very same thing over and over again.
I assume some people just don't care and simply seek the quite literal escape from reality that these kind of novels offer...

There's a vastly bigger difference in these series than just "changing the character names" and you know it. Anyway, leaving aside the ridiculous claims and the fact that in order to get anywhere near that sort of proportion would mean that you were probably being anything but random in your clicking, this week had a handful of specialist labels releasing in the early parts of the week - in other words, labels that focus on just a single genre. There are a lot of these so this happens all the time, but the difference here was that the series being released sell enough to make the rankings (most of these labels never or almost never show up on the rankings), and the fact that just about all the rest of the week's releases came out on Friday or Saturday, giving them less time to appear. Hence the higher than usual concentration of such series this week.

Yes there is a bigger difference than that. Of course I was exaggerating but you get my point of the (visible part of the) medium being quite stale and uninventive.
Well it wasn't random in the sense of"I klicked on all titles I hadn't heard of and 80% of those with an english description available were 'another world' titles.

Anyway thanks for explaining!

Happy to see Owari no seraph at the top, and Accel world selling well.

Nov 5, 2015 1:17 AM by AlexandricLeo

Specialists labels indeed. Interestingly, from what I've seen specialist label can be quite better at what they do than more generalist labels covering it as well. The best stories with Oretuee characters that I've seen all come from the same label that have released 5 days ago and will be in the next oricon sales report, for example.
There's quite an impressive and interesting variation available on the same theme as well.

Can't wait to see the sales for the next couple of weeks when Mahouka vol 18 is released.
