It was announced that the English essay Sushi and Beyond: What the Japanese Know About Cooking by Michael Booth will get a TV anime. The series will air on both NHK General and NHK World in a 20-minute time slot, beginning on April 16th and 12th, respectively.

Rareko, who is well-versed in short anime (Gakkatsu!, Medamayaki no Kimi Itsu Tsubusu?), is directing the series. The animation is being handled by Fanworks and a key visual for the series was posted on their blog.

The story follows the author and his family on their 100-day trip to Japan, during which they try a variety of Japanese cuisine. Originally published in 2010, the book was translated into Japanese in April 2013 under the title Eikoku Ikka, Nihon wo Taberu (British family, eats Japanese). This title will also be the running Japanese title for the anime.

I never read anything about the adaptations other than anime, though. Since the article is from last year, they might just decided to have TV anime adaptation after a long discussion instead of the adaptations you mentioned.

Yeah I suppose so. Anyway thank you for the reply.

Hi, so this looks interesting so I looked up the book and found this article

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/features/sushi-and-beyond-how-i-became-big-in-japan-9120173.html

It's by the author of the essay and written last February. He doesn't mention anime but does talk about meeting with Japanese TV companies about a two hour special, a drama series based on the book (I suppose he could have been referring to the anime but not being familiar with/wanting to use the word anime?) and a series about him going to Japan with his family again. He also mentions plans for two different manga adaptations.

So I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about whether anything had ever come of these? Are there already manga or drama adaptations of the book out there?

Essays are really interesting to read. George Orwell's "Shooting an elephant" ought to be adapted. It's really interesting.

When I read "English essay will be getting an anime adaptation" my first thought was that literally some random guy off the Internet wrote an essay on sushi for his English class and now it's somehow getting animated.

lol this. Sounds so random but interesting.

Huh, never heard of an essay becoming an anime but sounds interesting enough.

Then again, when I hear English essay, I first think of a two page high school analysis on some poetry by a long dead guy.

I-I didn't write this, I swear!

I think people are a bit confused about what this essay is. It's not like what'd you turn in for a high school class.

It's a 336 page book detailing the guy's experiences eating food in Japan.
