The Idolmaster movie is going to surpass Nanoha A and Madoka beginning's first week box office. I think it is a success.
It will be interesting if Love Live will go make a movie as well. The idol battles will begin once again.

Someone should explode at some point. Chuu22 is strong but its their second season, Hozuki might attract buyers from the niconico and fujoshi crowd, WCW manga fans are liking the JC adaptation, Svezda is attracting smokers and non-smokers alike lol. Who knows, really.

If you look at just one of HnR's discs it seems like the shows going to bomb but actually it'll probably sell 4-5k. And that's not counting Animate. Having so many discs can be misleading huh. Also, Hozuki already got a nice manga boost last week. Let's see if it continues.

Now I just hope that Noragami will pick up a bit as wel. ;_;

So according to my very uneducated guess, pre orders should come in after next week.
Note the uneducated part.

I think rederoin's point is more that there's nothing unusual about the release dates for Fall, so if the presence of remaining Fall series were affecting Winter, that would be true for every single season. Winter preorders have slumped in the last week or so, but it's hard to claim a direct correlation, or to know how much is from that and how much is from Amazon-LEs being solicited and so on.

I know its early, but does anybody else think the stalker estimations are rather low for this season?

Maybe, it's because of the rest of the fall series getting their volume 1 released? I think so at least.

Most of the autumn series came out over a month ago.

Still some left, right?

StB, KuroBas, Log Horizon and LB:R come out next week. After that there's just Monochrome. edit: and GBF

You can't just judge a season on its 10k sellers, the mid-tier is also important(even more important, i'd say).

Taking a different approach and using averages, which I prefer over v1s:

Winter 2010 (n=14)
0 - 20k
1 - 10k
4 - 5k
4 - 3k
5 - below 3k
4,774 - Average of the average

Winter 2011 (n=15)
2 - 20k
0 - 10k
2 - 5k
2 - 3k
9 - below 3k
9,188 - Average of the average

Winter 2012 (n=21)
1 - 20k
1 - 10k
6 - 5k (note, two of these over 9k)
5 - 3k
8 - below 3k
7,209 - Average of the average

Winter 2013 (n=29)
1 - 20k
0 - 10k
4 - 5k
7 - 3k
17 - below 3k
3,797 - Average of the average

A couple things make comparisons hard, such as Winter 2013 having more than double the late night series Winter 2010 did. Part of this is the proliferation of short episode shows, which further complicates comparison, but part of it is just more anime being made.

Average of the average is also a bit of a silly measurement but it shows how outliers can skew things. In 2011's case, remove Madoka and the number drops to 4,769. In 2013's case, drop short-runtime series (some of which sold well, actually) and the average comes to 4,466. In 2012, drop Nise and the average is 4,540... we're seeing a pattern here! Without the unique outliers in a season the average of the average is 4-5k. 4,774 → 4,769 → 4,540 → 4,466. I wouldn't say this number necessarily means anything but I was surprised how close it ended up being. Maybe there's something there...? Probably not for individual investors though.

As for 2014, it's got as many full-length series as 2013 had full + short! 29 full that would meet my criteria for tracking. plus 8 or 9 shorts, bringing us as high as 38. Approaching triple the number of series in 2010. The numbers keep increasing. We of course don't know how shows are going to end up selling but I'm expecting it to look very close to 2013 again, except with 20k being empty and 10k being maybe 1 or 2. I think when you triple the number of releases from a couple years prior, sales have to be more spread out, resulting in less clear "hits".

A conscious attempt to go for a breadth of series over relying on depth of sales in a few, or is this the industry over-reaching/a bubble situation? We'll see.

(Note, I track Precure out of interest but did not include it in any of the numbers above.)

Winter 2011 had 2 shows with vol 1 above 10k, Spring 2011 had 7.

Winter 2013 had 1 show with vol 1 above 10k, Spring 2013 had 6.

This season I'd expect 1, the Chuunibyou sequel, to top 10k. Seems pretty normal to me.

You can't just judge a season on its 10k sellers, the mid-tier is also important(even more important, i'd say).

And looking at the current estimates, its looking really bad. With only 2 shows around 5k. Sure, its inaccurate this early in the season, buts its not a good sign. And I don't think its normal(not 100% on this, I know far less about this than Jmal or symbv)

Autumn was also doing rather badly in its early season, but it was still doing better than Winter 2014.

From 4 November
13.6k Kuroko no Basket S2
12.5k IS S2(v2)
------10k line----
8.4k Little busters : Refrain
7.7k Kill la Kill
7.5k Strike the Bloo
6.5k Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio
5.5k Non Non Biyori

Purely going on V1 sales in 2013

Winter,
5k+ - 7
3k+ - 12

Spring,
5k+ - 12
3k+ - 15

Summer,
5k+ - 11
3k+ - 14

Winter season is never usually expected to have that much sales. I mean, what winter season shows would you expect to be a smash hit (10k or more) other than maybe the Chuunibyou sequel?

We still had at least one 20k seller in Winter in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013. 2010 was close, with Durarara!! at 18,311 which probably would have been 20k if it weren't 13 volumes.

Now it's not good to judge the industry purely on its tip top tier of sales, that's not how we determine its health. But just from the perspective of a sales watcher, it draws attention. It wouldn't stand out as much if Fall weren't so lacking in 20ks as well.

But the other thing to keep in mind, even if it's only limited to a few shows, is the effect of split versions on ranking. It might be surprising how an Amazon version ranking even 500-900 can affect the ranking of the normal version (or vice versa if the Amazon version is ranking higher). There's a number of things this season making Amazon confusing to get a read on, which therefore affect Stalker as well.

I'm talking about the current estimations, not what we expect them to sell.
Its lower than even Autumn. The highest 2 are Sonico and Chuu2, both estimated around 5k.

Its obviously to early to tell, but its not looking good at the moment.

With the announcement of Free's second season, we have three guaranteed shows that will sell above 20k (according to past records) for this year and that is

Hanamonogatari
Free
Fate/Stay remake

Some people will categorize Hanamonogatari as part of Summer 2013 so technically there are two shows guaranteed. No news about the Gundam Origins series yet.

If Free counts as "Guaranteed 20k sales", then you need to add Love Live 2 and Sword Art Online 2 as well.

Ehhh? Whose making these guarantees anyways? I'm not 100% sure FSN remake will sell 20k either. What if it sucks?

Jan 26, 2014 9:47 AM by Hahalollawl

Hanamonogatasri I'm probably counting as part of 2nd season, the same way OreImo/Bake/Achiga-hen had their later released episodes counted with the main series. But it does depend in part when it releases. Some gap is fine, but if they come out in, like, Fall, then it just gets silly and I'll count them as separate specials like Neko Kuro. In either case though, I won't be counting them as a standalone TV "series".

So putting Hanamono aside for now, I'd rather talk about "reasonably possible 20ks" than guaranteed 20ks. We've seen even a near 34k seller like Infinite Stratos drop below 20k average for its sequel so it's never guaranteed.

I think after the very weak Fall where no show is expected to average 20k (unless Kuroko is a lot more underestimated than season one was) for the first time since way back in Summer 2010, we're going to have another one of those in Winter already. At this point it will take a Garupan-level eruption from some unexpected series to get a 20k seller.

Spring has some major breakout potential again, like in 2013:
Love Live's fanbase hasn't gotten any smaller, and given how much event tickets boost its sales, getting over 20k again seems pretty easy if they toss a few more of those in.
Mahouka keeps getting talked about as if it's the next SAO, so maybe it can explode like SAO did?
Mekaku City Actors... Man, if the Kagepro fanbase shows up in full force and really likes what they see, that could be one of the break-out hits of the entire year. But this depends on how much of the Kagepro fanbase is also comprised of anime fans. Is the connection as clear cut as it is for otaku light novels?

Summer is too far away to talk about so I'll stop there, but of the remaining announced titles for 2014, yeah Fate/Stay and SAO2 so certainly sound like contenders for high sales. And I suppose we never know how far Sailor Moon is going to ride the nostalgia train (assuming it ever comes out!). Long shot for sure, but interesting to ponder.

Those kinds of shows might get a good reception, but the people rating it high aren't the same ones who buy anime. Its still on pace to only sell about 1000 copies on Stalker.

Well according to ANN, it's doing well on Toonami ranking #1 in it's time slot so I guess it's not a total loss.
yah its been getting very good ratings and increasing each week on toonami, if adult swim can afford to order new seasons of the boondocks every other year from madhouse then i think they can afford to do the same with dandy given the ratings its getting

Its getting worse ratings than the show that used to air in its timeslot.
you mean family guy? no shit its gonna do worse than family guy reruns, its family guy, like it or hate it people eat that up even re-runs, for the toonami block however its consistently stayed as the #1 show beating even new episodes of bleach and naruto
