They get reports from hundreds of retailers, both online and physical, who have thousands of individual shipping centers/storefronts.

Talking about any volume, but specifically vol 1. Rankings are relative; it wasn't necessarily selling less when v1 was #8 as opposed to #3, it just means other things sold more.

If we look at the things that have above it a couple times recently:
Madoka movies - of course
Shingeki - of course
Nagiasu - its revival has been unusually strong at HMV for a while now
Nisekoi - late solicit finally coming up

And on 1/21 it was pushed down by the rush of 1/22 releases and related discs. There are also six different retailers offering exclusive artboxes this time around, compared to 4 for season one, so that'll spread sales slightly more.

In any case I wouldn't be too worried. Chuu2 isn't some 20k seller and there will be sequel drop, so I expect v1 to start a little over 10k and maybe get to 13k. It needs to rank well to do that, but not outstandingly, and not all at once.

Edit: Forgot to mention one rather important detail - they've announced what the store exclusives are, but few (none?) of the stores haven't actually revealed what the extras look like. Doesn't make a lot of sense to decide where to buy your artbox if you don't know what'll be on it yet.

I hope it would chart more the next few days.

Anyways, new thread coming up.

I believe HMV was the only place Chuu2 season one really dominated at storefront (the others being top 10s only are too hard to make judgments about), and it has been top 10 every day there since the extras were announced, until today.

Also the effect of the Amazon edition on the ranking at Amazon is bigger than people might think (coincidentally just did a post on that topic: http://www.someanithing.com/?p=515)

But I'm surprised other titles like arpeggio, monogatari and shingeki are above it and not consistent. Particularly HMV. Nisekoi HMV boost is understandable but still surprised it is above chuuni yesterday. It seems buyers are on a wait-and-see approach or go full storefront for chuuni. Speaking of nisekoi lmao it ranked on animate on its first day. It also seems nisekoi buyers are considering store exclusives or might go storefront as well.

Awesome! This makes accessing data sooo much easier so I guess something good came out of the Mania downtime. I hope it comes back up though. I miss reading posts on sales/speculations.

I intend to put up a forum of some sort (it'll probably be an unsophisticated one like bbpress default or whatever though, I'll have to pick something easy) at least for sales discussion. Not until after I get all the data in place tho. I do want a place to discuss the data besides just here (it can be hard here because there's a different thread every week), plus somewhere to dump the kind of smaller posts I might not want to make a front page entry about (like Amazon monthly rankings or small observations).

Slow day for preorders today. Seems like SYD and Nisekoi have been quiet on the top. Hozuki, Noragami and Nisekoi manga having good anime boosts these past few days.
Still can't predict numbers for now. Too early and unstable.

Also of note regarding Chuu2koi, it's dropping (down to #270 now) because all the store exclusives got announced recently. Amazon even listed their own store exclusive as well, which is up to #430. As people buy other versions, the normal LE will get less sales for a while.

That's especially something to consider for Sekai Seifuku, where points are almost dead even split between the two versions.

Hoping for K-on box set to topple Madoka at least on amazon but rebellion is too strong.

Yeah getting #1 when ~5-6k people have already ordered the normal version would be unlikely. It peaked at #5 and I doubt it goes higher than that, except maybe during release week. Expecting it to top a movie that's only been solicited for a week and expected to sell a minimum of 100k BDs first week (which is 10x an optimistic estimate for the K-ON! box) is asking a bit much.

Series Data - Quick View looks great. Will definitely be using that a lot. Thanks jmal.

I guess I've worked on this as much as I can this weekend. Sales data has a new home:

http://www.someanithing.com

Consider it under construction/in beta for now. It will not be a sophisticated site, as I don't have the skillset to make anything fancy. This is just intended as a safe place to store the data that doesn't leave me relying on someone else's website to stay up/be maintained well. I do have everything from the sales threads backed up locally and on the cloud but that doesn't do other people any good if it's not accessible somewhere.

Starting a separate site also lets me do things like put data in sortable tables, which I've sorely missed being stuck with what's probably 5 year old vbb software at Mania.

Main links to pay attention to:

Table of Contents - Access all the detailed lists. Right now I have the following done:
- 10k+ ranking
- BD Box ranking
- Box office ranking
- Weekly posts (all since I started doing the Mania thread)
- Average sales by year
- Per-volume sales by year
- Vol. 1 lists through 2012

Sales FAQ/Guide - The same FAQ I had up at Mania

Series Data - Quick View - A new list, it's just a pure high level dump of title, average, year, season, studio, source material for all the releases I track in my list. Use it as a quick way to find info on a series if you can't remember what year it aired.

Expect things to break/change at random/be missing for a while as I can probably only really spend time on it on the weekends. I'll still be posting links to the full lists each week here, the link will just go to the new site rather than Mania.

If you know anyone who posted in the threads at Mania that doesn't follow this thread do please feel free to share as I have no way to contact them myself. Granted I think most of the regulars there I either know on twitter or they check this thread too anyway.

It's just that, with all the cult and the fanbase The Idolm@ster has in Japan, i thought the movie had at least a chance of coming close to it. But either way i'm just happy with the release of the movie.

Main difference is that mostly just otaku will go see an Idolmaster movie, while the K-ON! movie was very popular in the mainstream as well, as something that could be enjoyed by parents and children and was pretty self-contained. Same deal with AnoHana crossing ¥1bn. Madoka is a little harder to explain but never underestimate Aniplex' marketing strengths. Madoka got a lot of attention in mainstream press back when it aired so I guess a broad range of people went to see the movie.

I think somewhere between ¥500-700m for the Idolmaster movie, assuming it's well received.

I see, that explains it. Well, the good thing is that they are making the movie, and i'm sure it's going to be well received by its fans. Thank you very much for answering.

By the way, i really need to watch the "K-ON!" movie. I just don't have enough time for all the anime i wanna watch :(

As for getting access to the sales data again, I'm working on something to hopefully deal with that in the event Mania's downtime continues or lasts forever, but I'm not sure when I'll be done, as it's a lot of stuff to convert from the way I was doing it for the forums to how I'm trying to do it now.

By the way, I know "The Idolm@ster" movie it's expected to be a big hit, but just exactly how big? Like, at the same level of the "K-ON!" movie? Bigger? Lower?
K-ON level? That's setting the bar a bit high lol. Since Mania is down I can't check the numbers, but the K-ON movie sold over 100k ( or was it over 150k? I forget ) discs and was one of the highest grossing late night anime movies IIRC. I think it was recently passed by the Madoka 3 movie ( meaning I believe K-ON held the record previously ). Not sure if there were any other anime movies that passed it that are in the late night category.

jmal is the person to ask for these kinds of things though lol.

I hope it does well though. I <3 me some idolmaster but it sucks that I have to wait like 6-8 months for the disc + sub :(

Yeah, i know the tremendous success of the "K-On!" movie.

It's just that, with all the cult and the fanbase The Idolm@ster has in Japan, i thought the movie had at least a chance of coming close to it. But either way i'm just happy with the release of the movie.

And indeed, the waiting for the Blu-Rays sucks.

Jan 18, 2014 7:37 PM by Andan210

^ Yeah Madoka is the highest grossing late night anime currently according to available numbers and stats. Took them a couple of months before surpassing K-on. Impressive to be honest. If there's other articles suggesting its not, then feel free to correct me since many people here are Kyoani/k-on fans from the looks of it and might want to defend the franchise.
Maybe it would take years before someone will surpass Madoka.
I predict Im@s will go Nanoha movies level of hit. I' m excited for the movie actually. Its been soo long for another Im@s anime.

This season is the season of cuteness and rom-com. So far, Chuunibyo S2, Saki S2 and SYD* have been floating in the top 100 when new episodes come out, at lowest they fall to the 200-300 range. We've seen Engaged to the Unidentified, Sakura Trick, World Conquest, Nisekoi and Sonico (although it's because of the figma) flying up to the top 50/top 100 and at lowest (currently) they hang at the 100 -250 range. I get that this is quite early in the season, but this has to be some sort of indicator, right?

......... And I am loving every single minute of this season!

Hell yeah!. And don't forget "The Idolm@ster" Movie, that comes out this month.

By the way, I know "The Idolm@ster" movie it's expected to be a big hit, but just exactly how big? Like, at the same level of the "K-ON!" movie? Bigger? Lower?

Svezda and Nisekoi weekly boosts. It would be funny to be for those two going up and down every Saturday lolol. There's aniplex shop as well.
SYD boosted earlier last night too.
Yamakan and WUG fans might be waiting for a spark in the show I believe. They might be hesitating right now because of the haterage, criticism and Yamakan's mouth not shutting up!
I'm excited for kill la kill's aniplex bump if it could go 1k or not for now and not the winter season's show. Nonbiyori is showing no signs of giving up to it though.
Aaaand welcome gatchaman again to the top 100. Its been a long time heh.

Perhaps the fans are still wondering how the story will unfold? Some powerful concert in ep 03 or 04 should be perfect to turn the tides.

This is my thought. The high ranking of the movie indicates that, at the very least, people are engaging the franchise, enough to buy part of it - even if that's influenced by how super cheap the disc is. If you're willing to buy the "movie" (glorified OVA really) then clearly you don't hate the idea of the franchise, and could be a potential TV series buyer.

But so far, the TV series is stuck in that super ambiguous 200-400 range, where it's not doing outright badly like a 500+ title is, but can't break into the top 200 like a solid title would need to.

This time 3 weeks from now, it'll probably either be like #800 or pushing the top #100...

I also find it neat how close Chuunibyou Ren v1-2 have stayed to each other. Looking at that (hell, v2 is slightly ahead of v1 as I type this) you'd almost think it was one of those "event ticket in vols 1 and 2" things. v1 has been ranking lower after episode 2 than it did after episode 1, but that's pretty predictable, given other retailers have revealed their store-exclusive bonuses which diverts sales away. Stalker's tracker for the other stores is broken at the moment and I don't feel like looking them up manually, but it saw a clear uptick at HMV (taking #3-8 two days in a row) and Tsutaya. Even with that though, v1 is maintaining top 100 at Amazon, which is a good sign.

As for Sakura Trick it pulled an all-volume run on Gamers top 10 two days in a row last I checked, so that might be a good place to keep an eye on for it.

True, the movie ends nicely with the debut concert with lots of nice animated skirt twirling / pantsu flashing while we are still sort of waiting for that kind of moment in the series. And yes, it really is like episodes 1-2, honestly anyone who watches "episode 1" without watching the movie is going to be confused.

Seitokai Yakuindomo is high but it is close to release date so it doesn't have many points. Could be underestimated though.

I'm happy that Sakura Trick is doing alright. Hope it continues.

No-Rin episode 2 didn't do a lot for me but it is ranking well.
