Am I the only one surprised about To Love-Ru (an ecchi) being in the top 10? Or I guess I am still a noob when it comes to manga.

Don't underestimate Ecchi, mate.

If you degrade the Ecchi genre just because of some notion like "oh, a little cleavage is porn and porn no gud" that the previous generations in your family and society have set on you then you are very very wrong, sir.

Just saying, "mate", I like ecchi, it is the only genre other than shonen I watch for anime. I also like TLR. I am just surprised that many people in Japan support ecchi compared to other shonen titles that didn't make it on the list.

Japan supports a lot of things, Sakamoto desu ga is not ecchi and yet is selling crazy amount of vols. To Love Ru tanks has always sold well, that's why it ran on Shounen Jump for so long despite frequently doing poorly in Jump rankings.

also based on the latest chapter of one piece i can see the next volume topping omg

OMG I want to see that so badly, man if it doesn't happen I'll be disappointed. One Piece used to break 4mil/volume if I didn't remember wrongly, but now it's only around 2.5mil, damn I want it back at 4mil, shit's getting real now. I haven't been reading any, like.. any of the other manga since I read that One Piece chapter, it was so freakin amazing that I feel like none of the others are going to actually entertain me now. The same for anime, haven't been watching any of them either. I hope it's topping the list from next volume on XD One Piece for life

I feel that it will now that things are really picking up and getting back to how it used to be.. Also last chapter is like what everyone has been waiting for and the fandom is in a big frenzy now and all excited and happy. I think a lot of people had put it on hold because things have been rather slow but with news of the newest chapter are getting back in.

Sad to see Shingeki doing so bad this time :(
Read the thread. SnK wasn't even really out yet (available for sale on 9th) but still managed to rank highly.

Also one of the reasons it was topping for a while is because of the anime adaption.. After seeing the anime adaption many of the fans went out and bought every single volume at once.. Now that the anime has settled a little the sales are beginning to.

Was i wrong for saying that? Because i'm personally curious if there's even a single individual who read TLR not for the fanservice, but for the plot or characterization instead

I don't read TLR for the fanservice or for the plot, but I do read it for the characters because Momo, Mikan and Yui are 3 of the best characters in animanga history. The series is meaningless but it defo doesn't leave me empty inside after reading it, it's entertaining and that's all which matters to me.

Sorry to intrude. It's not fan-service if the point of it is to stimulate the reader sexually, it's ecchi.

I get the idea. I just don't get the meaning of it. Why bother beating around the bush when you can just be honest and get straightforward about it, honestlly?

Because teasing can be more stimulating, exciting and sexier than the going all the way. At least that's how I say it. I used to prefer ecchi over hentai and nudity in movies than actual porn movies.

Saying "why not just go for the broke and make porn?" proves you don't get idea of ecchi at all. I would take good ecchi over hentai any day. Darkness in particular is true masterpiece, work of God. Hentai is by no means an improvement over ecchi. A lot of what hentai do, ecchi (especially Darkness) can do better and deliver much more. (to be honest, outside restrictions put on hentai are more at fault here but well, that's how things are)

And it's not just ecchi. Harem and most romcom as well. those kinda stuff that spend most of their time walking in place instead of actually going somehwere. I really don't get the meaning of them. At all
Also, going by what you said I'm pretty sure you haven't read TLR and only know the series from mediocre anime which isn't fair at all, especially since we're in the manga thread.

Oh don't give me that. I did read the entire damn thing during my highschool days (about 3-4 years ago) and found it largely meaningless and left me empty inside. Unless if you find the "MC falls atop a girl and get beaten afterward over and over again" hijinks amusing, which isn't my thing at all.
But well, you would have to be into M&A for few more years to properly understand everything I said here. For now just bear in mind that genres aren't bad by themselves and you should never invite your personal prejudices into talk about quality.

Idk why but I felt that I just HAD to quote Shiroyasha's famous words from Mondaiji for the discussion above LOL.
"True art requires your imagination for the unknown. It demands you to seek out the mysterious. The best art is that which exists in your own universe within yourself. The contents of a maiden's skirt is no different. When you can see, all you are left with are vulgar panties, but if you cant see a thing, it is art!"

To love ru is a terrible series but has exceptional art and the Darkness incarnation decided to get pretty explicit, so that's what people went for.

But we're talking about the manga. With the exception of a brief quality increase in Motto, the anime is trash and pretty useless for purposes of well... anything.

Besides, i just can't buy ecchi in the first place. When the whole point of your stuff is to sexually stimulate your audience, why not just go for the broke and make porn?

While ecchi stuff is quite hit or miss for me, I think people drop the "why not just make porn?" comment too easily. While sexual stimulation is part of it, there's definitely a line between sexually suggestive material and straight up porn. Sometimes pushing the limits is more appealing than just having everyone fuck.

It's also easier to mix sexual fanservice into a scene that is otherwise not about sex than to incorporate sex without putting the story (no matter how simplistic a story it may be) on hold for 10 pages while someone orgasms.

And this is ignoring the legal distinction made when explicit sex happens and how that can limit a series' distribution/audience.

Fanservice and porn fill their own unique niches, and neither can replace the other completely.

Well sheesh don't sugar coat it man. lol

But yeah I can understand that distinction. Also beyond the legal distinction I would think there is a stigma attached to one more than the other. If I was to guess, something ecchi would have more mainstream potential because there is less stigma attached to fanservice.

Why is To-Love-ru popular? Because it was on Weekly Shounen Jump.

Being on shounen Jump means it is known to so many people.

Shounen jump sells about 3million and the number of people who read shounen jump would be about 4-5million . This number alone may well beat the whole anime fan base excluding general public-oriented anime such as sazae-san or pokemon or one piece.

Though,''to-love-ru darkness''which is more ecchi than first series is now on another magazine, the first series had been on Shounen Jump for a long time.

If it had never been on weekly shounen Jump and had started off as some minor magazine's manga just like other ecchi manga, the sales would be half or 1/3.

Japan is different. They show boobs with nipples and girls having sex in shoujo manga which is a 10-18 year old female demographic (e.g. Sukitte Ii na Yo). Bible thumping puritanical westerners may run screaming from ecchi manga but it really is no big deal in Japan to see boobs or high schoolers having implied sexual relations.

The explicitness of some shoujo manga is controversial, even in Japan. It doesn't attract the kind of hysteria as in the US, and people are generally not inclined to discuss sexual matters. However, that doesn't imply all-out approval. Older generations of Japanese are shocked by the content, with parents and bookstore owners occasionally voicing concerns. They've also noted the stark differences between 60s-70s shoujo manga (yet they don't say anything to their kids, despite the shock at discovering these in their possession) and the modern stuff.

East Asia is somewhat strange when it comes to sexuality. On one hand, they aren't particularly uptight about behaviors. However, there's often a tendency to maintain some image of propriety and conservatism (i.e. in Korean, Taiwanese, and Chinese polls, you'll find that most people claim to have had only one lifelong sexual partner or to value pre-marital chastity. You'll even find claims that HIV is a product of overseas decadence, and that Asia is immune to it. In reality though, social changes happened in a blink of an eye, even if no one admits to it). Many things go undiscussed despite varying views on the matter.

To Love-Ru is one of the most popular ecchi manga and anime series. Discs and manga sells very well. High School DxD is another example. But there are tons of ecchi works and non-ecchi works which don't sell well.

Does ecchi mean things will sell well? No. Does no ecchi mean they will sell poorly? No. The buyers of manga are not so shallow, they want more one way or the other. But it is not a deal breaker either way.

Hmmm interesting. And lol at the Bible thumping puritanical westerners comment. Not because I necessarily disagree with you or because I'm a bible thumper (I'm not) but because you just threw that out there lol (careful though, some people might be offended). Although I'm not sure Europe and the U.S. should be grouped together.
Meaning no offence, it was a fellow Canadian who wondered how an ecchi genre manga could sell well. I need to do some research here, see who it is who posts, "I would like this anime if it wasn't so ecchi" and see if they're all Canada/USA or if they include Europeans. It certainly isn't a complaint made by the intended audience of To Love Ru.
