Synopsis

Hailed as the savior of the Japanese Police Department, high school detective Shinichi Kudou uses a combination of observational skills, critical thinking, and all-around knowledge to solve cases that leave the police stumped.

One day, while at an outing with childhood friend Ran Mouri, Shinichi bears witness to a suspicious transaction between two men and is caught. As a result, he is forced to ingest a poison that is supposed to kill him, but unexpectedly shrinks his body to the size of a grade-schooler instead. Now believed to be dead, Shinichi takes up the alias of Conan Edogawa (a compound of the names of the famous mystery authors Arthur Conan Doyle and Ranpo Edogawa) in order to hide his identity and begins his new life as a seven-year-old living with Ran and her private detective father.

Meitantei Conan follows Conan as he continues to solve murder cases, all while slowly working toward exposing the men who shrunk him and eventually restoring his body.

Meitantei Conan was awarded the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award for best shounen manga in 2000. It has sold over 150 million copies as of 2015, making it the 5th highest selling manga series of all time.

The series has been published in English as Case Closed by VIZ Media under the Shonen Sunday imprint since September 7, 2004 (the Funimation dub name changes are kept in the publication). The series has also been simulpub through VIZ Manga. It is also published by Shogakukan Asian as Detective Conan, keeping the original Japanese names. Shogakukan Asian has also been publishing Detective Conan Kaito Kid Special Collection, a compilation of cases which feature the character Kaito Kuroba, since July 2017.

First of all, let me say that this type of manga is not for everybody. Obviously, that’s true for all manga, but there are some qualities of Detective Conan that will annoy some people. The main storyline moves very slowly and not much attention is given to character development. However, it is my favorite manga, and it is a great read for anyone who can handle some of the repetitive elements.

Story (10): The story itself is amazing. Like I mentioned before, the main storyline does move kind of slowly, but it has picked up speed a little around volume 73, where more of the ... cases start to relate to the main storyline. Aoyama is a master of leaving clues about future plotlines and making you wait in suspense for answers to cliffhangers. However, with the slow story, there is a lot of filler material that has nothing to do with the main storyline, but that's why I said that this manga isn't for everybody. All of the individual cases are pretty short, and you can go through them rather quickly. Because of that and the fact that the cases mostly follow a structured format, some of the characters, cases, and motives can seem repetitive. However, each case is unique and has to be solved in a different way.

Art (9): The art, especially the characters, is fairly unique. The style does change early in the series, but it's stayed consistent for a while now. Everything is well drawn, and it's easy to understand what's happening in a given panel.

Character (8): I didn't mention this when talking about the story, but the characters are fixed in time. Time does pass (changing of seasons, holidays, etc.), but the characters never age. This has the unfortunate effect of limiting character development. There is some through the main storyline, but for the most part, the characters don't evolve much. Other than the very slow main plot, the biggest way there is character development is usually in the form of cases that occurred before the start of the series. That’s often where you get to learn more about each character. Maybe the only other way is in terms of romantic relationships. Those contribute to the characters, although everything romantic also happens very slowly.

Enjoyment (10): I did say in the beginning that this has been my favorite manga to read. I've read the entire series three times so far and loved it every time. There is a lot of well-done humor that will make you laugh out loud. There hasn’t been as much comedy recently, but I appreciate that because it means Aoyama isn’t trying to force in repetitive humor. Each case is fun and engaging to read. The main storyline is one of the best I've ever read, and as the series goes on, it keeps getting better. If you don't mind the somewhat repetitive nature of the side characters, this is one that I definitely recommend reading.

How do I not like manga and I love anime , Yes, manga is the one that contributed to the birth of this great anime, as it is the pillar of its events and episodes, especially since the studio quotes all manga chapters. Without a doubt, I like very much the style of the writer Gosho Aoyama, as I find it simple and very beautiful drawing style at the same time. I also like the difference in drawing the characters from the rest of the other anime characters. Take this more as a supplement and a warning of sorts.

This manga offers a lot of shorter cases that are interesting about 50/50 while it started so good but with time it's stuck in a rut.

At the start the story keeps going and the mystery and cases are creative and each volume has an interesting novel or TV series or movie that influenced the author.

Later on the story is going nowhere, the reading becomes a drag and it's either 85% filler or a character has a short flashback or another character is added while nothing moves forward. That's why I stopped buying ...
