Since every thread can have someone writes some spoiler in it, should I put "possible spoiler" in the title of every thread here? It would look rather crowded and unseemly for the top page of News Board, don't you think? As for "no spoilers", there is already MAL rules specifying that spoiler discussion should be placed inside spoiler tags, don't you think the user needs to be a good citizen here instead of mods babysitting them about the rules at every turn?

User in MAL should read the rules and follow them when they post. It is a forum that people are free to post, so we put a substantial amount of trust on the users here to follow the rules. Mods resource is limited and so it is unlikely they can police every thread around. This is why we encourage users to report problematic posts by using the "report" button.

Not sure what you want me to do.. Since spoiler can easily be posted by anyone here, should I put SPOILERS on the title of each thread? Think how ridiculous it would look if I put "Monogatari Spoilers" or "Shingeki Spoilers" in the title of this "Japan's Weekly Blu-ray & CD Rankings for Jul 29 - Aug 4" thread. I am not sure if you have really thought the idea through...

And a news mods has no authority of editing other people's post (except the very first one that starts the thread) so even if I want to add spoiler tag in someone's post I can't. For this kind of thing, you have to use the "Report" button that comes with every post to report the post to a forum mods and ask him/her to do it.

Regarding SnK, I've fallen behind and didn't even realize there was a going to be a female titan. Thanks for that...

That's such a silly and meaningless argument, especially when made with 20/20 hindsight. Please stop justifying bad behavior.

Thanks for the fucking spoilers, people. How utterly inconsiderate a person do you need to be, seriously? Since when was the weekly sales thread a series discussion thread?

What anime did they spoil? I am too scared to look.

SnK(the identity of the female titan).

I reported it 6 or so hours ago, so maybe it got removed by now.

Oh, well I read the manga so I'm good. I notice it has been spoiled in the episode threads as well.

but I'm pretty surprised by how low Servant x Service's projected sales are with the comparisons to Working!! (and the same mangaka) which sold really well.
Don't forget the manga of SerSer sold less than one third of Working!! manga though. So from the beginning the fanbase of SerSer is much smaller than Working!! although I do agree that it could have performed better -- I wonder if this is a general malaise that affects almost all titles in this cour.

Thanks for the warnings, I haven't read the manga yet so the surprise really would have been ruined for me.

Not sure if this has been said already since I'm now too afraid to look at the other posts, but I'm pretty surprised by how low Servant x Service's projected sales are with the comparisons to Working!! (and the same mangaka) which sold really well.

One of the only other examples I can think of is Sunrise where second seasons trend up in sales as often as the other way around

Since 2000, Sunrise, late night/prime time anime:
• Down - Geass, Gundam 00, Horizon, HiME
• Up - Gundam Seed
Same, KyoAni:
• Down - Clannad, FMP, K-ON!, Haruhi
• Up - n/a

All down, to varying degrees, with the single exception of SEED. So no, neither studio has found a formula to pull off sequel increases. No studio has. even if you include Gintama for Sunrise, it had amazing consistency but was not immune to drops (best almost 16k, Enchousen <10k).

But looking at studio misses the point, whether a franchise goes up or down has very little to do with the animation studio. Some go up after changing studio or staff, others go up because they change tone/demographic, still others go up because their popularity shifts in-between seasons by factors external to the anime itself (Nanoha for example). Differences in sales can even be simply due to better coverage from Oricon, especially if the sequels are separated by years.

I mean here's a list of studios that worked on two seasons of a show that showed a noteworthy sales increase (>2%) since 2000:
2 - IG (Basara, GitS SAC)
2 - Seven Arcs (both Nanoha)
2 - Shaft (both Hidamari)
1 - Satelight (Aquarion)
1 - Bones (Darker than Black)
1 - Nomad (Rozen Maiden)
1 - Sunrise (Seed)
1 - JC (Index)
1 - Deen (Higurashi)
1 - Xebec (TLR)
1 - HAL Film Maker (Aria)

Plus 2 cases where a series increased, but under a different studio (Tenipri, Ikkitousen). So only one studio has ever seen two different franchises increase notably, at different times and for different reasons.

and stuff like Love Live just seems to have never ending tales.

We didn't have a Top 100 BD list (only Top 50 before) before the start of 2013, so there's no way to fairly compare to previous years (most weeks for Love Live would've been a little short of Top 50 thresholds), but Sunrise and KyoAni shows don't have unusually long tails with any more regularity than any other studio. Love Live is an exception, with the mix of low Top 100 thresholds + constant stream of interest-boosting news + continued popularity of the idol group behind it. Only other titles I've ever seen rank this long are K-ON! and Bakemonogatari, which benefited from being popular with BD early adopters back when we had extremely low (<200) thresholds in the early days of Oricon's BD rankings, with little competition to worry about.

I think too many of your conclusions about the uniqueness of certain studios are coming from at best a very cursory look at the data, and a closer analysis does not support them. If you want to use sales patterns to support your ideas, then the data has to match the conclusion.

And we know a shift to serious tone does not always lead to drop in sales -- Chu2byo is a good example.
I know I'm going to get flack for this, but you're citing a Kyoani example and from everything I seen they practically don't play by the same rules as any other label out there. It's almost like they have a near limitless amount of leeway whereas others would get nailed to the wall by their respective core fanbases for pretty much the same thing.
You should and you knew you should get flak about this, because we have been discussing it for some time and still now you could not get rid of the thought that even KyoAni could not really sustain any "loyal buying" behavior. As I said, the sooner you are rid yourself of those association of sales performance or popularity measurement (in Japan) with those behavior and comments (presumably irritating to you) from western fandom, the better you are able to give fair comment to the performance of anime shows in Japan.

As I said repeatedly before, what KyoAni could do at most is to raise expectation higher for its coming show but once the show starts they do not really get much leeway in terms of getting people to buy even if they are disappointed. What happened to Chu2byo just proved that people usually make the buying decision for the whole series instead of dropping abruptly in the middle, and it takes some really abrupt and unpopular change in the middle of series (for example the animation took a sharp turn for the worse) for sales to drop abruptly in the middle of the series (instead of the whole series getting less sales).

I didn't mean that as a like, "Oh those Kyoani fans will buy anything" but more as it seems that their releases don't suffer things like 2nd season fatigue or post 1st volume dropoff all that much. An example would be like jmal is always pointing out with the consistency of the Hyouka volumes. One of the only other examples I can think of is Sunrise where second seasons trend up in sales as often as the other way around and stuff like Love Live just seems to have never ending tales.

So yeah I was talking about consistency not blind buyer syndrome. Also Love Live is literally the number 1 DVD now. Who would have thunk it? Sunrise, much as I love their output more often than not there's another company that could share the wealth around sometimes for all the stuff they seem to produce seemingly magicing itself into the top 100 that you wouldn't expect to see there (Tiger and Bunny with it's 30 year old protagonist is just...wow even with Fujoshi support)......though I suppose they contribute back to the industry in their own ways by helping out on a lot of projects like Madoka (though they could have just smelled money and opportunity there all the same) and being one of the few studios I see in a position to and actively trying to develop interest in anime outside Japan first handed instead of through licensing.

Anyway I'm starting to notice a trend where with the 5th episode of a lot of stuff there's a tremendous jump from obscurity to top 100 levels. It's curious, but it's been happening with more than a few things this summer. It's good that a lot of stuff is starting to pick up steam now even if I'm not all that fond of the offerings this season. People gotta feed those families and what not.

season anyways so I guess shaft will abandon it and finish that SZS ending. SZS was sacrificed for bake anyway so karma I guess.

I think your definition of good vs. bad is more than a little off there. Anything above 10K is generally considered great. 20K indicates significant popularity. 30K+ you start to get golden. The problem is there's only a small handful of companies that regularly seem to be able to reach these numbers coughSunriseA1KyoanimaybeShafttoobutnotreallyconsistentlycough which is to borrow a term from Hockey culture "tough".

Yeah, I already forget exactly what page it was on but skip the 2-3 previous pages.

Seriously, it can be astonishing how oblivious people can be to their own inconsiderate actions... If this is acceptable/going to be a regular thing, I think it might help if Symbv put SPOILERS in the title of the thread.

I'd rather there just be a rule that spoiling outside of a series-specific discussion threads that explicitly state that it allows spoilers should be a ban-worthy offense. Especially if it's a thread like this where you'd never expect to see something like that completely out of nowhere. Spoilers just have no place in this thread at all.

@hpulley I think we were talking about different thing. The drama CD may be not new but the AMAZON special extra, the recitation CD, seems to be new. Perhaps that explains the big jump today?

Perhaps that explains, though re-run of other series did not seem to have produced as drastic an effect on sales ranking. Perhaps the deadline of preorder also contributes to the boost as well.
