I hate to bump an old sales thread, but I've seen 5+ year necrobumps go unnoticed. This pales in comparison~

Poor Joshiraku.
I'd normally vehemetly disagree with anything you post, especially with regard to sales and how only "shitty" anime are selling and whatnot.

However, it was this post that alerted me to the existence and my subsequent viewing of Joshiraku, a show I now consider a truly underrated classic. As such, I'd like to thank you as I'm sure I may have never come across it had it not been for this post here (of course I could have just commented on your profile...).

I only hope that they don't give up on the releases before all of the BDs are out - I love the first 5 that I've bought so far.
I never heard of a case when BD release for later volume gets cancelled right out because of poor sales. It is something that links directly to the reputation of the production company and the studio. Anyone who does it is almost guaranteed to be harshly criticized by anime fans, even those who do not watch the show much less its fans, for a long long time.

BTW - do you have any opinions/guesses as why the Zetsuen no Tempest anime is selling so poorly? The 9th manga release has sold around 100,000 copies, so the manga seems fairly popular.

It is kind of odd but it really seems like the fate is sealed in the first five minutes of the show and the first few weeks of presales most of the time. You have rare cases like Girls and Panzer but for the most part the decision to buy seems to be very early and quick. Just the odd person watches the 13th episode and then decides to buy the show.

You can ruin it too of course like Magi which started strong, strayed from the manga and dropped like a rock in later volumes.

Basically the fortune of the anime was sealed in the first couple of episodes when fans deemed it old style, slow-paced and boring.

(clipping...)

Anyway, the manga of Tempest is reasonably popular. The good sales of the the last volume (I consider over 100,000 of sales to be good) indeed reflects some effect from the anime. At the end for an adaptation work, the boost of sales of the original material can matter even more than the sale of the BD/DVD of the anime itself.

I guess that I am an "old style" anime fan <g> - I liked the anime and the manga and have been buying both.

Thanks for the comments.

Basically the fortune of the anime was sealed in the first couple of episodes when fans deemed it old style, slow-paced and boring. The character design also did not excite the fans too much -- its style seems to appeal to female but it does not go all the way to the female otaku style. It is only after Samon revealed to be not only not a "last boss" but actually a funnily clumsy "moe character" that interests for the series jumped. The episodes about the mind game about whether to save the princess languishing in a time trap got good feedback and the switch to love comedy with the revelation of the tree's purposes also got favorable reception, but by then it was too late. People still watched the show but they did not feel the urge to buy the disc.

Actually something similar also happened to Shinsekai yori, the feedback for the last third of that series is much more enthusiastic than the first third, and its poor sales were pretty much decided by the ambivalent reception it got at the early stage of the series.

I'd love to see 2001-2003 sales (if possible) sometime.

I'll get to them... someday. In the meantime the [DVDBD Sales Wiki has them, just in Japanese and not sorted by sales. The thing about when you start to get back more than a decade ago (or even sooner) is that Oricon was less comprehensive/released less data so it was harder for titles to rank. So it's tough to compare sales back then to now, especially for titles under 5k.

Thanks

100,000 isn't that much. BTOOOM! sells that much but only sells 300 discs. Shingeki no Kyojin sells over 1,000,000 copies per. Heck, Chihayafuru sells 400,000 copies per and yet it only sold over 3200 copies of its boxed set....

HPulley is not alone in have "unique" sets of "unloved" anime releases <g> - I think that half of my collection consists of obscure series. For example, I wonder how many other people actually bought the "Saint October" series, or "Hidamari no Ki"? (Or back to laser disc days with things like "Highschool Aurabuster")
"Hidamari no Ki" is probably too old but "Saint October" like "Sukitte Ii na Yo" never ranked though back then we only got the initial rankings. Poor "Sukitte Ii Na Yo" hasn't even ranked with the benefit of the top 100 later in the week that we get now though I think the first volume just missed out on the top 100 so you never know, though some days I wonder if it is better not to know just how unloved it is. BTOOOM! ranked once or twice so I know just how unloved it is... 345 as the lowest ranked of the season, only above "Sukitte" and right below "Shinsekai Yori" all three of which I bought. I sure know how to pick 'em!

I remember years ago a Japanese anime DVD release that was shifted from 1 release per month to 2 releases per month near the end of its release run. (I can't immediately remember which series) I vaguely remember that the sales for that series did poorly too.

Sukitte Ii na Yo failed to rank EVEN ONCE and yet they brought out all 6 volumes. I know as I bought them and for all I know I have the only complete set in existance... For the most part even if they only sell a few hundred I think the Bluray sales will give them some money. Most of the money has already been spent.

Can anyone remember a case where a japanese company simply cancelled the rest of the discs due to low sales or for another reason? Some last discs have been delayed indefinitely for the same reason why I suppose is almost the same as being cancelled.

Could be one of a kind...

At least unlike the BD list, I can see up to #100 for the CDs on Tuesday without having to wait till another day (and at the mercy of people who subscribe to the premium service so as to get the full BD list), which means we shall see the numbers on Tuesday.

Thanks for pointing me at that LoveLive! thread. I had missed it somehow...

The Girls Und Panzer drama CD is good! It is a drama CD, not just audio for episodes they never made and not just the seiyuu goofing around. I knew it would be good as I've enjoyed the drama shorts on the BDs so far. The short episode of Darjeeling's sayings is quite fun, "It's a bicycle!" is funny, of course Pravda vs. Sanders is good. Has me itching for the movie, and for the final BD!

Speaking of the Girls Und Panzer BD, Snow Wars on BD5 is an excellent OVA, more serious in a way than the others. It sort of extends episodes 8-9 against Pravda. Gotta love the 2.1 track, that's the only thing missing from the CD, the subwoofer effects.

How high do you think Yuyushiki will end up doing? I've seen some predictions of around 1.5~2k earlier on 2ch... but i'd like to keep my expectations lower to avoid any disappointment.
Amazon points for it is 1.3k-1.5k (depending on whether you count the DVD points or not). My expectation is Amazon would be pretty much spot-on for this series. There might be a chance that it goes above that, but I would rather hold back my expectation lest I get disappointed if things turn out not well after all...

I actually think it may be able to do 1.5k at least though. I've seen it chart a few times in the Top 10 at Gamers... but i'm not entirely sure how much of a difference it could make. The Top 10 consists of ranks sometimes doubling up, which suggests that daily sales there isn't that big compared to say Amazon.

The preliminary list is actually 20 BD slots with a minimum of 10 slots reserved for "animation". If animation is particularly stronger than non-animation this week... then Karneval 1 could make it. But yes, it may not make it this week, since there is also ViviPan 3, Puchimas! 3, etc that could prevent it from charting.
You are right. I keep having the impression that this week is a "weak week for anime" and keep thinking there will only be 10 anime BDs making the list. Yeah, it is entirely possible Karneval would make it if it turns out the anime is not that weak after all, which seems to be the case according to the daily chart you have compiled so far.

Yeah, the threshold here may be around 2~3k or so. Definitely not strong enough for a 5k threshold, but it should be significantly higher than last week's ~1.7k threshold.

On a side note, it looks like the GaruPan Drama CD has been ranking well so far this week in the "Album" category on Oricon. Hopefully it does well on Tuesday.

*** **5 *15 *18 *14 *** *** GaruPan Drama CD
