So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Here are the weekly Blu-ray & CD rankings for May 27th - Jun 2nd

Rank / This week's sales by copies / Cumulative sales / Titles

Blu-ray
*1, 33,450 *33,450 Girls und Panzer vol.5
*3, 15,982 *15,982 Love Live! School Idol Project vol.3
*5, *7,536 **7,536 Little Busters! vol.6
*6, *7,449 **7,449 To LOVE-Ru Darkness vol.6
14, *2,230 **2,230 Yuyushiki vol.1

DVD

*6, 1,841 *,**1,841 Girls und Panzer vol.5
*8, 1,505 *,**1,505 Little Busters! vol.6

Finally a 1st week for GaruPan with no stock issue whatsoever! Average passes Infinite Stratos, to place #19 in the best selling TV anime since 2000.

Angel Beats and Gundam 00 S2 are next... which will most likely be passed on Thursday, as v1+v2 Standard Editions only needs to average 298 & 783 respectively, lol. GaruPan is continuing to amaze for an "original" anime which was predicted to sell ~3.5k average before Fall 2012 started!

Key: Rank / Average sales / Anime Title
*15 *36,511 Full Metal Alchemist
*16 *35,636 Sword Art Online
*17 *34,601 Gundam 00 S2
*18 *34,116 Angel Beats!
*19 *33,819 Girls und Panzer
*20 *33,812 Infinite Stratos
*21 *31,523 AnoHana

Love Live! v3 is slightly up on v2! Nice to see... I have a good feeling for v4 which consists of Maki and Rin.

As usual, Little Busters! beats out To Love-Ru on BD but To Love-Ru wins when DVDs come to play.

Yuyushiki exceeded my expectations (I predicted ~1.8k). It's unfortunately still under the Manabi Line (2,899), but maybe it'll add more next week. 1st week 2ch prediction (2,288~2,294) was very very close!

As expected, GuP exceeds 30k. Though, I'm really surprised to see Karneval sell that much. Then again, I should have never underestimate the purchasing power of fujoshi (it worked for Manglobe last season).

Yeah, 2ch Sales Thread is full of AA pics of "Moppy" (caricature of Shinonono Houki of I.S., very popular in 2ch) reacting in horror with the revelation that GirlPan has finally officially overtaken Infinite Stratos in avg sales.

With Love Live still continuously on the radar (with games, events, concerts, CDs keep coming up), I think people picking up the anime may still be gradually increasing.

The pattern is always like this and so far in terms of BD+DVD total ToLoveRu Darkness still outpaces Little Busters!

And of course it exceeded mine too. You are right, the title is skewed towards storefront so stalker estimate is an underestimate. Currently 2ch is comparing it to another slice-of-life show that also sells a bit over 2k - Acchi Kocchi.

Another key thing to note is the BIG DROP for Nyaruko-san, the first week sales for vol.1 of first season is 7410 and for this season it is just 4408. 20% drop is considered within expectation but for Nyaruko-san the drop is over 40%! No wonder 2ch is now grouping it with Milky Holmes and Ika-Musume....

If you have followed the preorder sales ranking in Amazon for this season's anime (to help save people's time I wrote an analysis in MAL here: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=603363&show=100#msg22330719 ) you would know that Karneval has long been tipped as one of the better selling works in this season.

That is true. I really hope it can pick up a few thousand more fans along the way. As you probably already know, 91,723 votes were cast from March 31~April 22 for the 5th General Election to choose who will be the center of the 6th PV. If we take the average (making it very simple here but no means close to reality), then there may be 30k+ potential fans in that time period.

Acchi Kocchi also incidentally came to mind when I saw Yuyushiki's sales. I wonder if it can outsell v1 like GJ-bu did earlier for itself?

If you have followed the preorder sales ranking in Amazon for this season's anime (to help save people's time I wrote an analysis in MAL here: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=603363&show=100#msg22330719 ) you would know that Karneval has long been tipped as one of the better selling works in this season.
That close to Valvrave!? Does that mean Karneval may become Manglobe's best selling anime? Well at least I'm happy for them, finding something that sells.

I blind purchased the blu-ray, (still haven't watched it yet) had no idea about all the 'bromance'. Might give it away.

Above average sales from Karneval there. Manglobe is getting some good sales now. I'm not gonna comment on the quality of the show as that always don't go well. inb4 fujoshi and shit taste

Big drop of Nyaruko there from its 1st season sales. So much for Xebec trying to cash more from this one.

Shame for Yuyushiki. It's fun to watch though.

Azazel should be for next week with a lot of titles a few weeks from now. Still a long time before the predicted top sellers come out. We'll probably get a rough estimate as we get closer to their releases.

One mystery this week is Chokkyuu Hyoudai Robot Anime. Its vol.1 went on sale on May 29th. Its final Amazon point total is around 800 so no surprise for it not showing up in Oricon BD chart today, but in Sound Scan, the other major surveyor of media sales, the figure is almost 2400. Although discrepancy between Oricon and Sound Scan is always to be expected, such big gap is quite rare. I wonder what difference in the survey methodology between the two companies could have produced such big differences.

Too bad for Yuyushiki, one of the few anime I make a point of importing to help support. It's a very pretty and entertaining show. The only other show I've really liked that's bombed was Hyakko. The only thing I can think of that they have in common that might be detrimental is that their character designs are different from the norm.

Not surprised at Nyaruko dropping, too much nonsense space plot has made me stall on this season. The original stole my attention by being fun, what with Nyaruko's fabulously moe kiss blowing scene and Kuuko's humor, but when they go on about some plot about thwarting ugly-looking aliens, interest is lost fast.

Shouldn't surprise anyone that GuP is selling like hot cakes (not that I mind) but I'm a little surprised that Nyaruko W only sold 4,000. If memory serves right, the first season did much better and so far the second one isn't much different in terms of plot or funny references.

For me Nyaruko was crazy and fun in 1st season, but got tiring to watch in 2nd season. I guess the novelty has worn off quite a bit, particularly the antics between Mahiro, Nyaruko, Kuuko and the forks. I remember keenly spending time to check the multiple references to old anime, tokusatsu shows, J-pop, seiyuu in-jokes and Cthultu mythology during the 1st season, even bought the LN but I no longer have the same enthusiasm this season. And the multitude of very competitive shows this season of course does not help.

I really love Yuyushiki and in terms of animation and music I think it deserves top-notched praises. Its jokes can be hit or miss though and as I observe its humor is not even widely shared among Japanese fans (kind of same situation in some other anime like Nichijou for example) but I think it depicts the relationship and the interactions of the characters, particularly the three in the main cast really really well. Also I think its character design definitely has some impact for its appeal but then I guess that cannot be helped as it is an adaptation. I have compiled a list of works that I am considering importing, and after quite a lot of consideration at the end I did not include Yuyushiki - not saying it does not deserve buying but it just shows how many good shows (at least to me) in this season.

In fact, 2ch got the sales of these two titles pretty spot-on this time. The mean estimate (done before the season starts) for Yuyushiki is 2096 (actual sales 2230) and Nyaruko-san2 is 4159 (actual sales 4408). I am pretty impressed.

@symbv, do Japanese fans comment on Nyaruko's video quality? It's one of very few anime made in 1080p (well, due to it being made by Xebec it looks like average 720p but certainly stomps all shows from this studio). Personally, I don't get why were they trying so hard with good graphics for Nyaruko 2, to me it was obvious it's gonna do much worse than S1 as gags quickly grew old. Surprise hit which soon turned mediocre. What's the point of continuing? Okay, there are LNs, but why spend much more money on how the show looks? Or maybe it sells above 4k due to it being pretty and would do worse otherwise?

I think the adaptation is a bit more non-mainstream than even the manga. I think Yuyushiki is a bit more standard and moe in the manga, a bit cuter. The anime character designers seem to have taken a few of the different characteristics from the manga and magnified them even further. I still like and am buying the discs in addition to the manga. The bonus end cards and Yuyushiki Broadcast Club Radio bonus CD are really great extras IMO.

I do agree the jokes really are out there and the manga doesn't even have footnotes to help you so either you get them or you don't. I also agree that the humor may be above some people watching it though I am not sure you need to understand every joke and reference to enjoy the show and the manga.

I think the manga is also fairly obscure compared to something like Yuruyuri and lack of recognition may not help the disc sales. Hopefully the converse will be true and it will help the manga and magazine sales of Manga Time KKR.

I'm not importing much this season. Yuyushiki for sure, already got disc 1. Muromi-san too. And maybe Gargantia if the last 3 episodes can rescue it for me, it is on very thin ice. Not sure why but not a lot appealed to me this season. If I only buy 9 discs with Yuyushiki and Muromi-san it will be the lightest buying season for me since summer 2011...

One more piece of information from this week:

With the sales data for the last volume of ToLoveRu Darkness out this week, I think we can be quite confident to say that ToLoveRu Darkness gets the last slot of the TOP FOUR in 2012 Fall Season (the first three are GirlPan, JoJo and Chu2byo). So far Darkness has average sales of 10,690 while Little Busters has 10,434. Of course Little Busters may add another 1000 or so in the coming weeks like it previously did but that only adds <200 for the avg sales, and given that Little Busters still have more volumes coming and the sales are most likely going to drop, while Darkness has all the volumes released and done, the likelihood for the average sales for LB to overtake Darkness is going to be tiny.

What killed Yuyushiki for me was the art. Its an alright show but the art/character designs really killed its chances of ever being anything more to me... since a moe show that doesn't have characters I consider cute has kinda failed in the most important aspect.

I've really wished all season that Aiura was the full length show and Yuyushiki was the short, since I really liked Aiuras characters and art a lot more.

Woah, Karneval.
Stalker projected it to sell close to 6k BD+DVD combined but it crossed that and sold more than 7k!
Granted, there's an event ticket apparently but still, it should add more next week!
Volume 2 will definitely sell less but if it averages 4k per volume, that's enough for me.
Can't be too picky...I should be glad it didn't bomb like Hakkenden.

Again I think the anime character designers emphasized the differences like their cheeks too much. The manga is more moe to me:

Edit: I'd like to buy Aiura but the disc doesn't include much extra, just a character song CD. No extra episodes or anything which I've gotten used to with the shorts lately with Wooser, Mangirl! and Yama no Susume all including bonus episodes. I guess a bonus CD is alright... will have to think about it as encouraging more Aiura would be a good thing. Perhaps 10 discs this season...

^ Actually I like the character design of Yuyushiki in the anime a bit more than the one in the manga. I guess I find the variation of expressions in the anime more appealing. But I need to also say that it indeed took time to get used to (and they look easier on the eyes when they are moving). In truth, when I read the manga (that was quite some time before the anime was announced) I did not really find the humor that funny. However, my impression of it improves quite a bit after seeing the anime, and I credit the animation, the screenplay which picks and adapts the stories, the art and the seiyuu for that.

Aiura is another manga that I did not think much when I picked up long before there is an anime but had my impression improved quite substantially by the anime. Here unlike Yuyushiki the seiyuu are really so-so (they are rookies anyway so can't complain too much) but the art, music and particularly the character design (just check the manga to see what I mean) are so good. One volume of BD is not that much of a cost anyway - and I can get to see all those thighs (and kani kani kani) X-D

I can't tell if the sales are so low that they just don't rank or if 4-koma stuff isn't on the same lists but I can't remember seeing Yuyushiki, Aiura, Yama no Susume, Teekyuu, Mangirl!, Kotoura-san or any of those in the manga lists, ever. Anyone else remember seeing them?

I remember reading news that Kotoura-san's manga circulation had really increased while the anime was on but I can't remember seeing any numbers anywhere.

Angel Beats and Gundam 00 S2 are next... which will most likely be passed on Thursday, as v1+v2 Standard Editions only needs to average 298 & 783 respectively, lol. GaruPan is continuing to amaze for an "original" anime which was predicted to sell ~3.5k average before Fall 2012 started!

Key: Rank / Average sales / Anime Title
*15 *36,511 Full Metal Alchemist
*16 *35,636 Sword Art Online
*17 *34,601 Gundam 00 S2
*18 *34,116 Angel Beats!
*19 *33,819 Girls und Panzer
*20 *33,812 Infinite Stratos
*21 *31,523 AnoHana

And SAO is going to fall as well. After 2 weeks Vol 8 sold a little under 30,000 combined disks. While they may get a few more this week, that is 5,600 less than their normal average spread out of the 7 vol, that is a reduction of 800 in their average sales, dropping them to around 34,836. The final vol 9 does have that novella attached to it, so they may be able to remedy the situation, a lot of rot has set in.

I had a feeling this was going to happen, and if my prediction holds Vol 6 of GnP will well exceed 36K in sales because of the awesomeness of the final two episodes, making 15th as probably the extreme best we can hope for. I'll be routing all the way. My only hope is that the various production companies take the right lessons away from its success.

Good anime for you or me does not mean always mean good sales... But anyway, way back in the last season when the anime was still airing we already knew it was going to sell around the manabi line. The DVD of the first 2 volumes managed to rank and the BD+DVD total ended up above the line but the DVD for vol.3 and 4 did not rank and the number was thus down to somewhere above 2k.

2612 for my poor Sakurasou 5 including the DVDs. This looks at first glance to be up a bit from previous volumes where the DVDs did not rank.

This is a bit below the Manabi line. The Korean cuisine switcharoo didn't help and while it may only have affected sales to the tune of 10% or so, in the case of close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, tactical thermonuclear weapons and the Manabi line, 10% would have helped in this case...

While I personally find the adaptation for Karneval to fall quite short of the, admittedly rather high, bar set by the manga, I'm pretty thrilled it's selling well.

Nyaruko being so low... well I'm not surprised at all: first season had a lot of references to Lovecraft works while this went into Kuuko doing/thinking something perverted and defrosting of our poor main character, they should end it with true romance to destroy everything :P

Yuyushiki sad to see it low but than after start when I was even considering buying it... it started to be boring or at least chemistry between characters disappeared. Now it's hard to watch but will end just to have it completed :P

I still wonder why Toei does even bother with Precure BD :) for movies I get it but here... at least toys sell rather well, will see about music as TV ratings are low (so far lowest of all series and I'm not surprised by this).

I can't say Yuyushiki's low sales surprise me. It looks good, but I'm not getting the same vibe from it as I did with Yuru Yuri, which this show has quite some similarities to. Enjoyable, but nothing really groundbreaking. At least its OP/ED single is still selling, so at least something good came from it (though even that is probably not really a bestseller).

Nyarlko W dropping that much IS a surprise, though. Maybe it's because the show is becoming more romantic comedy with various shout-outs, rather than full-on parody with romantic aspects. Then again, this was a trend started in season 1, so it shouldn't have cone that much as a surprise, right?

I like how Girls und Panzer exceeded everyone's expectations. That show was a huge risk, it being an original show, but it paid off in a way no one could have predicted.

I'm curious as how to the other Spring shows will sell, especially Henneko.
