What anime/anime scene made you say "this is too far?". People have different tolerance levels of specific shows and scenes, but do share! |

If you haven't watched Romantic Killer, don't press the button below After reaching the tenth episode, I thought to myself, what a great romcom anime, I'll give it an 8 once it's done. 2 episodes later and my score dropped to 6. The forced drama just went too far for me, and it felt really out of place for the anime. |

Definitely excessive gore scenes and those stupid rape / implied rape scenes, besides being awful, it's trying way too hard as edgy as possible. |

first time watching happy sugar life cuz i had no idea what i was getting into, i was quite new to anime back then too "oh so thats how overt things can get here"; oh and i totally know there are things that are even more... lets just say sus, but its just not really things or genres i indulge in u know after some time i read the manga to refresh the thing cuz it was like really crazy intense watching it, and it turned out to be actually quite enjoyable, still like shocking, but it was a little different now knowing what to expect i think its overhated only because its controversial, i dont think it embraces or fetishizes any of the bad shit that happens there, while there are other shows and mangas that actually do embrace suspect shit, happy sugar life overtly states that 'yeah this is fucked up' thats my reading at least one which straight up made me drop the show immediately was Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, my little monster, in like the first or second episode, i dont remember, the guy like kind of jumped out the bushes and overpowered the girl and said "dont scream or i will r*p* you" i immediately dropped the thing, i just cant handle stuff like this; happy sugar life touched on the same subject, in fact even more overtly, because it actually did happen u know, but the scene in my little monster caught me off guard so much and then it was like nothing ever happened and afaik they later romance right, i just cant with this shit man, because the show didnt condemn it in anyway, this threat is brushed over like its nothing, while in happy sugar life its a very important plot point that traumatizes the fucked in the head blonde boy |

pushing it to the edge of comfort in terms of depiction can make it so exciting because it evokes such a strong reacton. Feelings of disgust in from of visual depiction or forcing unnerving imagination can be very powerful. But is has to be linked to the story and theme of the anime, otherwise it's pure shock factor. |

@DreadfulControl it was a powerup because gon's nen can't be that powerful, it was already established in tower arc and it was established that the ant was damn powerful but he didn't use his nen yet he had all the time in the world I would have had no problems if gon defeated the ant in a logical way per the in-universe laws what about barcelona though? we're talking anime, you don't see me making fun of you for being some random football team fan |

The gross headphone scene in Kaguya S2, fucking disgusting and so so so unecessary. I guess technically this one fanservice moment in fire force because it made me drop the series, when the nun characters clothes ripped in a really convenient way. The toothbrush scene in Monogatari. As well as the feet shit with shinobu? Honestly a lot of the fanservice in that show bothers me, the snake exorcism scene was super uncomfortable too. Censoring the blood in detective conan by making it black, what's the point? You already make all the victims eyes closed as censorship adding the blood censors its just, it's a murder mystery ughhh! The major plot point that happened in InuxBoku SS manga after where the anime leaves off If I wasn't watching with my bf the massage scene of Oshiete Galko-chan Any anime that makes zombie waifus I literally wanna throw up seeing that shit, necrophilia is the vilest thing on planet Earth Making Rimuru a d****** lord, mc killing thousands of innocent people, and reviving everyone Basically all the shock scenes in Made in Abyss s2, they had no point this time it was just gross and stupid and idfc enough to keep watching |

Generally I don't have much tolerance for gore, limited tolerance for fan service and no tolerance for satanic/demonic stuff. It also gets me when shows are held back by the author's disgusting fetishes or fan service. Made in abyss had great world building but the torture porn at the end of S1 and what I heard about S2 was too much for me. Still liked Classroom of the Elite overall but the random fanservice especially in S1 took away from the show imo. |

Everyone says gore, ecchi and so on but I'm gonna say Hinamatsuri. All the jokes involving homeless, working children hit a little too close to home. Living in poverty and such is a tragedy that happens on a daily basis in every country, and I found it extremely tasteless. |

rape and guro, specially when its shown for morbid interest. stopped watching an anime called Saikin, Imōto no Yōsu ga Chotto Okaishiinda ga because of that. since its fiction i don't consider it to be "morally" wrong, its just unpleasant to watch and there are lots of better stuff to watch anyways. |

Pretty much guro and sadism. Characters ripping off their own limbs, taking out their own eyes with butter knives (if you don't know I'll tell you the titles) and that kind of stupid shit. Dear writers who make that shit- shut up. That has nothing to do with taking a journey or getting to the top of a sport. One tier down from that is the kind of shit in Gate, where Itami calls in the Japanese army to a fantasy world where they can open up machine-guns on an army of half rabbit people with medieval technology then try to justify it "cuz they were oppressive". Pffft what militarist nonsense. I'm rewatching it just to see if my memory was correct. It was in the first scene where that happens, and it's way overboard immoral. |

Every time they did fan service in Fairy Tail because I was a 12 year old who was not long out of Catholic school and was brought up by relatively conservative parents who slut shame a lot I don't really find thing "too far" now. Contextually I might, but typically shocking things come from shock media so it makes sense why it's there. HOWEVER... Nothing really. There are definitly moments that had a negative impact on me and I needed to relax after, but I always think to myself: "Yeah that's horrible, but it happens in our world to...so why shouldn't it be part of a story." But to be fair I can keep a strict border between fictional media and real world. So yeah, nothing goes to far for me. |

The only thing that comes close is certain scenes in Made in Abyss, just for the gross out factor. Aside from that, I'm more or less unfazed by most stuff at this point. I'll still have some "the fuck did I just watch?" moments, but my reaction rarely goes beyond that, unless there's some really graphic gore shown. And when I say "really graphic" I mean REALLY graphic. Other than that, it's all basically become a novelty to me. |

1. I use to think this was Elfen Lied's infamous dog scene, but discussions on gratuity lead me to conclude that gratuity is relative. Who is to say that the more mundane slice of life scenes were not gratuitous compared to the more typical violence of Elfen Lied? As a result, I guess you could say the "dog scene" was not so much that it has went to far, but waiting too long to actually go that far. In terms of an anime that has made me think "this has gone too far"...Fairy Tail and its message on how wonderful friendship is. I am not at all a fan of the series, and it is mainly because of how excessive it embraces the theme of friendship is literal magic. It has the subtlety of a sledgehammer slamming into one's fist at 12:00 noon. Like, I watch Naruto as a fan and I thought Fairy Tail went overboard with its obsession. I don't think I can communicate just how much Fairy Tail launches into speeches on how wonderful friendship is, but honestly? I kind of wonder if the author of Fairy Tail, Hiro Mashima, has had any substantial friendships growing up or as an adult. I am not saying this to be mean. It just that writing something like Fairy Tail withs its absurd and obsessive emphasis on friendship, even compared to its contemporaries, comes off to me as a work from someone who really wants companionship but never experienced it, so they turn to writing about it to satisfy their desire. 2. Additionally, The Irregular at Magic High School went full Randian political at the end of episode 4. Granted, I heard about the series before I went into it, but I didn't think it would be this blatant about its politics. 3. Also...the beginning of Classroom of the Elite opened with a Nietzsche quote was probably the quickest. I feel so horrible for Nietzsche to be associated with young adult edginess, honestly. SuperAdventure said: One tier down from that is the kind of shit in Gate, where Itami calls in the Japanese army to a fantasy world where they can open up machine-guns on an army of half rabbit people with medieval technology then try to justify it "cuz they were oppressive". Now, I am not sure if I should think that the army was completely unjustified in its initial foray into the other world or even using lethal weaponry against the technologically less advanced (If a person came at me with a knife and I had a gun, then I should be able to use it, but obviously war is different), but the series never treats these things with the ethical problems and controversy that they actually warrant. Is it right to attack an army that is outmatched by your firepower, and to what extent should this be permissible? What of the reparations aspect? Does the JSDF actually have any right to occupy land under these pretense? Though of course, the author literally being former JSDF, everything the JSDF does is justified, and anyone who has any moral hesitation regarding what is essentially an invasion/declaration of war is an anti-war hawk with ulterior motives and no backing to their claim. In terms of the scenes that went too far for me, I would argue the testifying before the Japanese DIET would be it for me. |

I don't think I have a clear line for that. Btw, I don't mind 'controversial' stuff being in a story or how some people call it 'authors putting their fetishes in their stories'. So what? More power to them, I'm glad for them getting to make money off of doing something they enjoy. ^^ I guess if an anime annoys or bores me, I drop it. Stuff that easily annoys me are protags that are social cripples and/or complete wimps, unable to get a word out once they start talking to a person of their preferred gender. I also get annoyed by overly dumb decisions happening too frequently (depends on context and genre). Of course there are exceptions to this but that's the general gist of it. |

PeripheralVision said: I like your thoughts on it, they are along the same lines I was thinking when I first watch it on simulcast years ago. I don't think the right to retaliate against the "Empire" is in question- it's the words I put in bold that are the important issue. Against an enemy with medieval weapons, very little force needs to be used to push them back. But that's not what happens. SuperAdventure said: One tier down from that is the kind of shit in Gate, where Itami calls in the Japanese army to a fantasy world where they can open up machine-guns on an army of half rabbit people with medieval technology then try to justify it "cuz they were oppressive". In terms of the scenes that went too far for me, I would argue the testifying before the Japanese DIET would be it for me. They open up with heavy artillery for HOURS and slaughter so many people, I think they say "a hundred thousand" casualties at one point, and they show the soldiers on the other side, crying about how they can't possibly stand up to this enemy (the JSDF) and that they will all surely be wiped out.... this is a clear cut case of overwhelming force, and once it was clear the medieval army was defeated they kept mowing them down- which is no longer a valid response, it turns into a massacre. They intervene in battles between a princess and her garrison with some bandits- and again use overwhelming force to kill bandits, who legally are CIVILIANS. So then it opens the question is it right to take one side in a battle between two sides where you're not involve, and in this case against the civilians? It's crazy. I haven't gotten up to testimony at the DIET yet, even though I watched this back when it came out I forgot a lot of pieces of it. And yes, before anyone wants to get angry at me- I do have ethical questions about American use of force abroad, in the unjustified raid against the retreating Iraqi army from Kuwait in 1991 (the "Highway of Death"), the invasion of Vietnam and the use of overwhelming force against an indigenous guerrilla force; the attacks on civilians in Iraq again this century etc etc... the way this fictional anime seems to want to emulate these historical events was very disturbing to me, which was why I say it goes "too far" |
