Mayuri Shiina from Steins;Gate must have some kind of spectrum disorder, also Violet Evergarden to some extend.

I'm not sure if it's confirmed, but I always think Shiina Mashiro from Sakurasou has autism. The way she acts and how she isn't interested in basically anything beside art and, later on, the dorm she spends a lot of her time in makes me believe that she has autism.

I'm not generalizing people with autism, but a lot of people that have autism I met in life show a similar behavior. Please do not be offended.

With the Light manga is especially about having an autistic children.

Far as anime goes, not familiar with any with an autistic character.

Manga? Keiko Tobe's With the Light dabbles into a Japanese family raising their autistic son from birth to middle school.

Tbh, I don't believe so in Violet. Some people with war trauma, especially when they have been kids at that time, become emotionally a bit withdrawn and feel "dull", and since she didn't really get to know other people, she had problems with communication and empathy at first. But maybe it's both.

I would concur with this, Shiina likely has full on autism, as well as being a savant.

The other examples here that I'm familiar with may be on the autism spectrum but are more high-functioning.

Renge definitely doesn't have autism to any degree. She's a young child (I believe 6 or 7-years-old), and she is definitely typical.

Shiina Mashiro from Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo definitely has Autism (and possibly Savant Syndrome). I have a cousin with Autism, and I notice that Shiina has many of the same unusual behaviors. She avoids eye contact pretty much always, she doesn't talk much, she speaks very simply, she is terrible at simple tasks, but amazing at some complex ones. But the one I noticed quickest was how Shiina carries herself. She usually slouches a bit and always has her arms tucked/folded close to her and held up.

Also, I'm a Psychology major, and I minored in Child Development, focusing on cognitive disorders.

It's not confirmed but many fans speculate that Rei Kiriyama from March Comes in Like a Lion might have autism, but on the lower end of the spectrum. Again this is not confirmed, but there's a chance he might be.

I was going to say Shinji Ikari - he certainly has trouble connecting and empathizing with others. But I'm a bit unsure (it's not in my official headcanon). I think what people have to be mindful of is that just because a character has trouble connecting and socializing with others doesn't mean they're autistic. Some characters may have had repressed, lonely, traumatic childhoods and that may be the reason why it's hard for them to socialize properly and connect with people.

I was thinking of someone like Haruhi Suzumiya. In my headcanon, I'd say she has a double diagnosis of autism and ADHD. I've met quite a few people my age with these diagnoses (I'm autistic myself and have been to a few youth groups for autistic teenagers).

It would explain her special interest and fixation on the paranormal and her inability to connect with other classmates that aren't into the paranormal.

She certainly thinks outside the box as well!

Also, many of the people I've met with a double diagnosis of autism and ADHD who have that similar enthusiastic, vibrant personality. That's probably the ADHD side of things. Even though they were very delightful people, I personally found it very hard to connect with those people because I found their personalities a bit overwhelming. I kinda felt the same way with Haruhi.

I knew one girl with ADHD and autism (very lovely and sweet person) who would always try to hug me for some reason, even though I hated it and kept telling her no. I guess I was sorta like her Mikuru Asahina haha

I think a lot of Haruhi's more supposedly negative traits can be explained by it as well. I think she finds it difficult to recognize other people's emotions and feelings. She just gets so caught up and determined in her interests that she loses sight of what's in front of her and crosses a few lines.

Edit: I just thought about something. I don’t think Haruhi experiences any sensory issues.
I mean, who knows? I guess there may be some autistic people out there that have a high tolerance for that kind of stuff. I certainly am not lol

I am sure Renge isn't on the autistic spectum, she doesn't have any kind of problem with socializing or communication, even though she seems to be strange somtimes. On the other hand a lot of time the main girl seems to have autistic streak in romances for the reason that the simp beta male main character has a chance when it comes to building a relationship.

L and his successor in death note.
violet from violet evergarden. 100%.
yui from k-on probably.
there was only one time autism came up in any anime I've seen. it was about her:
https://myanimelist.net/character/8661/Kei_Minamikaze
she's not autistic, it was used as a diversion.
this guy is 100% an autist in the game, but I don't remember him being the same way in the anime:

I think most characters that can be said to be autism-coded can also be considered savants and/or have simply had a secluded upbringing. That being said, I can think of two anime characters that I have personally related to, even if one is more autistic-coded than the other:

1. Ryuu from Akagami no Shirayukihime (Snow White with the Red Hair).
https://myanimelist.net/character/25483/Ryuu
He isn't good with other people, and he is a prodigy when it comes to plants and seems to hyperfixate on reading about them. People also tend to misunderstand his facial expressions. Unfortunately he is only a side character, though.

2. Noé Archiviste from Vanitas no Carte (The Case Study of Vanitas)
https://myanimelist.net/character/136692/No%C3%A9_Archiviste?q=no%C3%A9%20&cat=character
Even though Noé had a secluded upbringing, being very clueless at times and fairly innocent, he is also very empathetic (feeling what others are feeling) and seems to be "on another wave-length" than most. When curious about something, he follows it, and he seems to feel emotions very strongly. While all of this might not seem like "typical autism behaviour" to most, since one of the possible criteria is an inability to understand and interact with other people, it is not uncommon for autistic people to be hypersensitive to others' feelings (and to add to it, the supposed inability to communicate with others often comes down to an inability to communicate with neurotypicals, not other autistics).

I'd also like to mention Albedo from Genshin Impact, even if he's from a game rather than an anime. While nonhuman, he can be considered to be autistic-coded, because of things such as having difficulties and disinterest in social interaction unless it involves alchemy, something otherwordly or art, and while not having trouble communicating per se, tends to talk only about things he is interested in, he seems to have a sensitivity to sound, and prefers being around children.

I wouldn't say that any of these characters are clearly autistic though, but certainly have some traits that can be considered to be autistic.

As others have said, With The Light manga has a child that is explicitly autistic (even diagnosed), but keep in mind that it can be extremely difficult to read at times.

I want to kindly point out that it is not uncommon to have co-occurring disorders and conditions. For example, you can be autistic and have an intellectual disability (which is the more correct term to use than retarded, which has a VERY negative connotation to it) at the same time. Of course, when it comes to fictional characters we can only speculate and interpret their characters in the way we like, but I just wanted to tell you that it doesn't need to be either or, neither in fiction nor in real life.

Possibly Komi (komyushou), perhaps her social anxiety is just a comorbidity.

Maybe Shigeo (mob psycho)?
