Why do some of you rate shows before finishing them?

I don't understand the logic behind this, cause there's always the possibility that the show becomes good or goes to shit as time goes on.

I mean, I can change my rating as the show changes, can't I? If the argument is that people are stubborn and won't change the initial rating in the delusion of always having been right, I will say that that's not me, at least.

I don't do this personally, but I can see why plenty of people do. It makes sense to give a score based on your first impression of however many episodes you've watched, and then change it as you watch more and experience the rest of the show.

I usually rate immediately if I knew what to expect, like if I came from the manga. Of course if the adaption was shit I'd shit on the ratings too

well, you can always change or adjust the rating depending if the show becomes good or goes to shit as you say, I have rated an 8-9 in the 3rd episode of some shows and then when it finish I end up rating it a 5-7 or the other way around

1) My scores are only meant to judge the episodes I saw, not the entirety of that entry.
2) I can change my scores as I watch more episodes.
3) I want to keep track of my initial impression, because even if I did see some anime with a great start getting progressively worse, I've never seen an anime becoming a 9 or a 10 if my first impression of it wasn't more than a 7.

only on currently airing shows, see how my impression changes episode to episode. Had shows start off with a great first impression and plummet, and vice versa.

Yeah, I do this but of course, I will adjust the rating along the way. Also, I do think judging after 1-2 episodes is unfair so I rate it after 5 episodes or so.

For myself. I always change it while watching and after finishing a Series - but rating it right away (usually after first 3 episodes or whenever I feel like it) just to see how my impression of it changes and if I stop watching it and come back after a while I remember how enjoyable it was or what I initially thought of it.
My "first" Rating is usually never the rating I give the show after I finished it. I've started watching a Series giving it a 6 and down the line ended up giving it a 9 and vice versa.

Even one episode is enough for me to form an opinion about an anime. And if my opinion about the show changes as I watch it, then I just change my rating to reflect that. This is a really simple thing, but so many people seem to want to make it complicated, judging by how often this question is asked.

It would be like if you were reading a book, and you had gotten through only a few chapters, and someone asked what you thought of it. You might say something like, “It’s pretty good so far,” or “I’m finding it a little boring.” It might get better or worse as you read, but that doesn’t mean you’re not going to have an opinion on it right away, just based on what you’ve read up until that point. My early ratings are the same, they’re based on what I’ve seen so far, and they may or may not change after I’ve completed the series.

If ratings could never ever be changed, then of course I would wait until I had completed an anime before making a decision, but that’s not the case. I could change my ratings every day if I wanted to. They’re not set in stone.

The logic simply is that the rating isn't final before the show was completed. I rate seasonals instantly to signal my trend to friends who do the same for me. I rate finished airing shows after 50% of the eps, same rationale.

I understand why someone would rate an anime before completing it. What I don't understand is why they rate an anime a 10 when it has not aired yet or has only one episode aired that had nothing amazing in it worth giving a 10. Well I actually I know why. They are fan of the source and just want to push their anime in the top.

I don't know either. Who the hell rates a movie in the middle of the movie? Their argument is "Initial impression" or "Hey I like to rate it so see how it's going." but no one does that normally.

I've never heard of a TV Watcher that rates Breaking Bad in the middle of the show. It just seems weird as fuck to me, but I'll let people do what they want.

Consider also that if the moment you get the big picture of what the show is doing rating it when it is finished can be easier since you can do some comparing on how it expelled in the end at what it was trying to achieve with scoring.

I concur that I don't understand the prospect. After all, a series is a single package; you can't rate a package if it isn't complete. An example of why it just doesn't work well, in my opinion, is the whole concept of foreshadowing. How can you rate foreshadowing without knowing what is being foreshadowed?

I'm the same way. It's usually better for me to capture my enjoyment of the series during the time I'm watching it rather than after. It was pretty hard for me to record and rate all the anime I watched in the past since I saw most of them a while ago.

I rated God of Highschool a 10 by the second episode, only for it to disappoint.

Luckily, I wasn't locked into giving it that score. I quickly rectified my hasty judgement with a 6 by the time I finished it. And so there's your answer.

Typically I only ever rate shows that I'm watching on a weekly basis (i.e. airing ones) while I haven't finished them.

Yes! Well no. Partly. It doesn't have to be to push the anime to the top. If the adaptation does a good enough job you can get really excited.

Why not? People don't just stop having opinions of a show before they finish it, it's not like your scores are suddenly unable to be changed afterwards. Being able to rate a show before it's finished is a function of MAL, why wouldn't people use it?

I don't rate shows before I finish either, but it wasn't that hard for me to understand why others do it.

And I don't understand why people keep asking this same question.

If you have completed N out of M episodes obviously your score is based on those N. It goes without saying that it can change later.

Also it goes without saying that you can change it even after you have completed the show...maybe years after that. Opinions change, you gain more experience. Some shows can get new meaning to you if you understand the context better of decline if you look at them with eyes not crowded by hype.

You have on your favorites anime that have yet to air, nothing stops them from being hot garbage. Bad adaptations aren't that rare.

I get your point though I don't understand how you can translate initial impression of it's pretty good or it's boring into a scale 1-10.

I understand but why even bother doing that and constantly going back and forth changing scores. To me seems better to just wait for the anime to finish to give an overall rating.

I generally have a good idea how good an anime will be by no later than halfway through. Of course, if it WOWs me at the end or disappoints, the rating changes. I stopped dropping anime a while back.

I do that with long running anime/manga, as they give me enough content to rate them on. I am always free to change the rating with a few clicks, it's not like it's permanent you know.
With short series tho, like 13 or 24 episodes or idk anything below 80 episodes, I rate only after finishing them.

A good story is good the entire way through.
If a story is bad/good it's most likely that it will stay that way because the person that wrote the first part also wrote the rest.

And if they somehow manage to drastically improve/worsen their writing it just takes 1 minute to adjust the score.

That is the logic behind that
