Why do people here write full summaries of anime episodes?

Every time there's a new episode of a popular show, you go to the specific forum thread of the episode and usually the first pages are already littered with some long posts describing everything that happened, like a full recap... Do they know we just watched the episode as well?

I kinda feel sorry for them because it looks like hard work but honestly after watching an episode I go to the forum to discuss story highlights, funny stuff, quality of animation, etc... not to read an essay describing everything that I just watched.

maybe its so people can make pointers about the episode without it feeling random, since they added that event in their essay

That's hardly the worst thing about ep/chapter discussions. At least those retelling the plot posts help you remember when you go back and look at them

Now those posts that are super vague, super general one-liners that look like they were written by a bot? Yea those ones are definitely annoying. Happens more often than not in manga discussions, and it's usually the same few users who do this but man, it'd be nice if it didn't look like it was only there to boost post count every single time

Bruh we have to describe what happened at that part before we express our opinion. Also did you ever thought that the episode summaries might be helpful for those who may have forget what happened and really want to know what happened at that episode? It isn't "Hard work' if you're not lazy.
Before you quote me saying that no need to be so butthurt about it I feel offended because I'm one of those who write short summaries and express my opinions in episode discussions.

Hey, I actually love it when our guy @KANLen09 writes those full summaries...

Ain't nothing with noting what you see, plus it helps you remember much, especially when a season has shit loads of seasonals...

Then maybe it's just the way I use the forum. After watching an episode, I like to read a bit about people's opinion on the episode, not really to read a full recap. And there's usually more than 1 essay lol.

It's like going to the movies with friends and after the movie one of them is like "before I let you know my opinion, I will tell you a full recap, at the beginning the main character was (...)" lol we know, we just watched it.

But anyway, it's cool to know some people may like that, I guess...

For me it would be better if they input those summaries in the episode summary section of MAL (example).

For those times when I actually want a quick refresher on what happened in some episode(s) (let's say a season 2 is starting and I don't remember clearly season 1), I tend to use wikipedia (example).

@NewYearSameMe your profile pic is comedy gold from the anime of the season.

I also just remembered another reason: that some people watch the raw Japanese episode as it airs in Japan before it is subtitled and airs in the west, so the summaries help the people that watch the raw but don’t understand the Japanese

my guess is that
1) they read the manga/novel so they already know the plot so they just care about visuals and soundtrack and they type summaries to help others or read them as refreshers
2) people are too impatient to wait so maybe they even read the summaries before watching the raw episode
Just my guesses; I’ve never done this

@NewYearSameMe EHHHH I didn't ask for this shoutout, but it's good to have some notice.

To the new users here, y'all have to understand that a typical 24-min episode has crap loads of info that basically within the 1st page of episode discussions, is VERY CRUCIAL. There's loads of content that is adapted from say pages of LNs to chapters of manga that it's hard to summarize into a single episode discussion, so it's just to take notice and then point it out within 24 mins.

Like what @GoZha mentioned, the reason why we watch RAWs from Japan is to get the context of what the episodes adapted, and if there's any missing content from the source materials. Yes, you can say that it's utterly useless when creating episode discussions, but what I like to do is to lift off the original source material and compare to the anime, and that's about it. You can choose to wait for subs to come out as is the preferred method, but at most times, there's always mistranslations that Crunchyroll and Funimation will miss out, so the enjoyment factor lacks a lot during the translation.

Or you could do the way that @Scordolo does it, same thing, just shorter and the same attention span.

In a nutshell, think as if we're helping you do a service on the crap loads of seasonals that are coming out every 3 months, and we don't have the extended brain cells to cover 12-13/24-26 episodes at once, much less coming from someone who always does this:

One of my teachers often said that students are better at writing summaries than any sort of meaningful analysis. You see the same thing in reviews.

If you see me at the episode forums (especially during the Fall 2020 seasonal animes) I used to enter REALLY LONG POSTS in the episode threads and here's my reason why. Sometimes you just watch an episode (and if you're like me), you're always observing and catching the tiniest of details that might be fun to point at or share for the forums. But in exchange of that, I kind of summarized almost everything that happened in that episode. It can even take me as long as 10-15 minutes to post all my thoughts and it's really time-consuming.

But there's an upside to that, once you come back to a certain episode forum thread and search for your own post, you see again almost every details that takes you back to that episode. You suddenly remember the points and the events that happened, and sometimes it is fun to actually see what your thoughts were just right after you post it in the episode thread. And that's the positives of that in my opinion.

(This is pretty much how I post back then and even now. Sometimes I post much more longer than this, and when I mean long I mean 5 PARAGRAPHS WORTH OF LONG. But recently I've been trimming my posts to save some bit of time, so hope this tip of mine helps @skysurf lol.)

Yeah kinda true, though I'll just stick to my usual formula. We all have our own formulas of enjoyment outta the shows we watch.

Nailed it. Some people here are arguing about SHORT vs LONG posts, which totally misses the point of my original question of this thread.

Short post = bot? *sigh* I kinda expected better from you.

The post that you're quoting is simply from the forum thread of a recap episode LOL. It's a bit sad I have to explain it, but it was simply making fun of the amount of recaps of that show. Not to say my post was comedy gold, but it just takes a bit of common sense to understand its context:

So yeah:

I don't mind short or long posts on a general anime discussion forum. I don't see a reason why the lenght of a post should define whether it's good or bad. It's all about the content; there are short posts that are simply dull, there are short posts that are funny, there are some essay-long full recap posts that add nothing to a discussion, there are long posts with quality opinions, etc.

As I said in my previous comments, full recaps certainly have its place (for example in the episode summary section of MAL, maybe they should promote that better), I just thought it was weird to see them on the discussion threads (often more than 1 of those kind of posts).

@skysurf Try and find forum posts that don't make sense and tell me how you feel about them. As a starter, find this user's posts (Ringare) and you'll see why. Just giving you a crash course.

Sorry, but honestly doing that "research" sounds like a waste of time. In any open internet forum there will be all kinds of maturity level in the posts. I was just asking about a very specific type of posts, that imo take hard work and dedication to do that everytime, and I already got answers from some people who do that, so it's all good.

If you like to rush to be the first one in an episode forum thread, that's ok. Same thing happens in other sites like youtube with the "first!" comments lol. I don't see any importance in that, but apparently some people care about such stuff.

Also notice how I didn't point at particular people in my original post, to avoid triggering unnecessary wars.

I personally do that so I can either fondly look back on what I liked about it to my understanding, or better as a point reminder whenever I want to go back and refresh my memory for a point or recap when I watch a sequel or whatever.

It's basically my own notes which I don't post in my database's comment section anymore.

to me its more a reminder of what i like about the episode so that i can visit it again when i forgot about the anime already thats why i like to have my post in the first few pages for easy searching but i wish MAL forums got "search within a thread" function though so that i will not do that anymore

our memory is all about use it or lose it anyway and repeatedly saying things over and over for example can make you not lose that memory

I get you OP, I was also so confused the first few times I go to discussions forums when I see recaps, and not just one at the top. But it's not a bad thing, and I guess you can quote that recap to point out which scene the opinion you wanted to discuss came from.
