I see this serious getting praised left and right and I didn't even laugh once, I know I'm 30 episodes away from a serious arc, I'm looking forward to it. I heard the pacing is good as well. Why do you people praise Gintama so much?

Great satire and parodies

Well-written character

The contrast between the funny slice of life episodes and the tragic serious arcs

Unlike other shounen that focuses of fighting and getting stronger, Gintama is more about a broken man trying to live life the best he can.

I don't know if that last sentence was spoilers or not, but that's very intriguing, I love that premise. It's just the comedy that really kills me and stops me from watching the series. I shouldn't be complaining.. at least it's not FMA:B level, that short joke kills me everytime, and not in a good way.

So you have watched 20 episodes and haven't laughed even once? Then I'd recommend you drop it, watching Gintama is pointless if all you want is serious arcs

I was thinking about just skipping to the serious arcs but fans said that the serious arcs don't work if you skip around, because the jokes and characters didn't grow on you. Some of the characters are likeable.. but no, I haven't laughed even once. The jokes piss me off if anything

I mean up to u, for me I laughed a bit not much but some eps i would die laughing (only like 2 tho) but its about the characters and the serious arcs for me. Even with gintama being my 4th fav anime ever i still don't laugh most of the time. but if u can't watch it drop it for now, i did that with gintama when i first watched it and recently did that with a series called Reborn!

100% the characters. The serious arcs are pretty mediocre/underwhelming for the most part, and the comedy can be super hit and miss.

Gintama is a series that atkes time. Its only when you've reached episode 90 where the comedy is GOAT tier. The serious arcs are goat tier, great main character (dare i say the BEST MC), great music, comedy etc.

More than half the show is comedy. If you don't like it, then drop the show. the comedy is subjective after all

I love the characters of Gintama. Gintoki is the exact type of sarcastic asshole character that I love. Kagura is just chaos incarnate with a bottomless stomach. Then you have Shinpachi who serves as the perfect straight man to the other two. That does even include the immense amount of side characters. Also most Gintama fans agree that the first 50 episodes are probably the weakest part of the show. I am not even finished the first season and I can tell that just by the later episodes of first season are significantly better than the first 50 episodes.

My favs are more nostalgia value, I wouldn't enjoy them that much on a rewatch. I couldn't get thorugh the first 3 episodes of Naruto rewatch and I definetly couldn't get through Shippuden. Good to hear the comedy gets better though

Hmm, I can't answer your poll, because it is literally all of them. My favorite arc are the episodes form 167-173, which starts as a joke around some characters, but in the last two episodes turns serious and brings storytelling and characters at the same time to its maximum. I think the thing that I liked the most are the characters, so I go with that for the sake of the poll.

For me the comedy did take a while, I actually didn't laugh until after 30 episodes. However before that point I still would crack a smile and enjoy myself, so if you aren't having a good time, then no need to force yourself to continue. It does get better though, a lot better, when it comes to comedy.

Also I know people praise the serious arcs, and I like them too, however people keep saying "even the serious arcs are better than in other Shounen". I mean I could get behind that if we're talking the later serious arcs, but the earlier ones I wouldn't put that praise on, they're still really good but not enough to suddenly compete with actual serious shows. Don't watch Gintama for the serious arcs, I mean there's a shit ton of comedy episodes you have to watch between each serious arc. I mean, the first real serious arc happens at episode 58 which lasts until episode 61, and then the next really serious arc is at like episode 80-something.

So my advice is get rid of this idea of sticking with Gintama for the serious arcs, and instead either drop it, or give it some more time for the comedy to actually jive with you. You will enjoy the serious arcs when they happen, but only IF you're already a fan of Gintama. The serious arcs have a serious plot, but it's still like 30-60% jokes depending on the arc in question.

It's mostly the Shonens that have horrible humor too. If you count FMA as a Shonen, the humor was so disgusting I wanted to rip my eyeballs out, I know I have it as 1 episode, my cousin was watching it and that short Edward Elric joke came EVERY EPISODE like make a new joke man. Berserk's humor with Puck isn't all that either. Anime and manga in general is just shit with humor, but maybe that's just my personality

For all the reasons you listed. It manages to mix comedy and serious arcs in a very natural and amazing way that's very rare for other series to do. The comedy contrasts the serious arcs very well and vice versa.
It has some of the best characters and character dynamics as well. It's not a series for everyone but I love the series for a lot of reasons

Comedy and characters for sure
Serious arcs are good but follow a really repetitive pattern and hence I feel that are overpraised as it is mostly a deep/emotional message/backstory , mindless fighting and Gintoki being overpowered but that doesn't mean that all of them are bad but they aren't just as good as people make them out to be , the appeal of the show is its comedy and characters

I would just say that stay put. The comedy, characters and serious arcs everything gets better and better.

In the beginning you are not habituated to that type of dialogue heavy comedy so it might feel a bit different.

If you still aren't able to get into it then well, just drop it. That show's not for you.

Serious arcs in the anime are amazing (especially the later ones) and it's one of the most hilarious anime ever, but none of it would have been so if not for all the iconic characters that it has.

Literally every character from the yorozuya to katsura and madao are amazing.
