I think they make for some nice entertainment, and some engrossing stories have been provided through that way of storytelling. They also helped me learn Japanese

They are good but tend to be very long and need you to devote a large chunk of time.

The greatest visual novel i ever played, and one of my all time favourite games, is Zero Escape: Virtues Last Reward. It's beyond amazing and it bugs me that so few people have played it.

It's nice, it's like reading a Light Novel except you don't have to think about what it looks like because it's already got it for you. It's a bit like an interactive movie in a sense. I still prefer Light Novels since I can read them faster I guess, though.

I read Umineko and jesus fucking christ that thing DRAGGED. It could lose like one third of its "runtime" and it'd benefit from it.

Read first two eps of Higurashi, same. Just more silly.

Personally, I think VNs can be nice and interesting if you can mix the right kind of art, music to set the atmosphere and write well. But from what I have seen, most of it is just degeneracy otaku pandering. Just don't worship them, hehe.
Umineko had those weird rabbit costumes that just made me unable to take it seriously.

The VN that I actually liked is VA-11 HALL-A, aka, the waifu bartending. While it used some anime tropes, it was at least decently written and it wasn't entirely garbage pandering.

Danganronpa was interesting as far as murder mysteries go, but it's another thing that it's hard to take seriously because of how stupid it is.

Man, I swear I was thinking about Umineko when I typed that out lol. Previously I only tried short VNs and one day I decided to tackle that one due to its high score and popularity. I saw the estimated playing time as "very long" on vndb and I thought "no big deal". I feel like crying now.

Yes, I think the concept is unique and the writing is good but I agree that the duration is such an overkill. It becomes a factor that makes me putting off playing other VNs for years now. I originally planned to play the popular ones like Ever17 and FSN after that but yeah they are all very long.

I haven't play Higurashi but I get it lol, they are from the same developer after all.
Yes, good art and music are always appreciated. What originally attracted me to VN was the possibility to choose the route though. I figured it would be quite different than manga/anime which is one-way so I gave it a try.

Hey, thanks for the recommendations and the soundtracks! Could I ask you again about visual novel in the future?

Most of the VNs I played didn't actually have routes, just failstates, somehow. But yeah, being able to influence your story is a neat idea.

...though those VNs are probably all of what I played(read), but uh, yea, you can ask!

I can respect the fact that VNs have their audience, but they're not my cup of tea. I realize I may compare them too much to actual video games, but VNs aren't all that engaging to me. There isn't much interactivity beyond pressing a button to display the next text block, and I find the ones that aren't free are often overpriced for the amount of content on offer.

No problem, I took a hint from your previous post and I don't want to ask for recommendations from users who worship visual novel. It would be too draining for me among other reasons lol.

I was feeling a bit depressed the other day because a visual novel I was looking forward to finally came out and I bought it, but I'd miscalculated my laptop's ability to play it. Thanks, Necrobarista. You've taught me that I should really pay more attention to Steam user requirements from now on.

I did get to play Coffee Talk a few months ago though. That was a cosy little few hours.

I have played some and enjoyed most of them. The key here is reading, if you’re not used to reading novels in the first place, it’s likely that you’ll not get entertained. The story is also a big factor, of course. Higurashi and Saya no Uta are my favorite VN’s. I have bought Steins;Gate a couple of months ago but have yet to start it. DDLC has no real “story” in it but it is decent, there’s just too many gimmicks imo.

P.S. Does anyone know of the title of this VN I played roughly 5 years ago? All I remember is that there a girl in a hospital and that I cried a lot lol

I wasn't big into them until I played those with major gameplay elements (the Rance series and Danganronpa come to mind). Since then, I've been reading the best titles the medium has to offer.

I can definitely understand people's complaints about visual novels being slow as molasses, though. Even after completing nearly a hundred titles, I still find most visual novels to be painfully slow at times.

Just give it a fair try. A lot of people had issues with how...original, it is so to speak.
Fantasy RPG american football with VN sequences.

It is rather deep thematically and well written, and the "combat system" is much deeper than you'd might think and actually shines on higher difficulties.

It's a good medium for stories, but they're never as well-written as books nor as atmospheric or well-performed as movies or shows so I usually just avoid them. I do like watching gameplay of them though.

Though I guess this also includes Danganronpa and Ace Attorney which are some of my favorite game series. But to me they're more like puzzle games with extremely long dialogue.

Visual Novels are great. The appeal for me is to be able to explore different outcomes and routes that occur within a story, so I'm not too into kinetic novels. It would be very difficult to convert something like the Zero Escape series into any other medium. Plus, oftentimes they are way lengthier than an anime, with far more depth. I mean, the entire focus is generally on the story, much less animation and such, so you can expect more attention to detail to the plot. Take STEINS;GATE for instance. The TIPS system is great, and IMO the visual novel is way better than the anime, even though I love the anime. You move at your own pace through these types of games, rather than anime setting the pacing for you, so when you start getting hyped and reading faster it really amps the effect. Raging Loop is another VN I've played recently, and it's another example of something that can't really effectively be translated into another medium. These experiences are unique and I love peeling back some of the story in ways you couldn't with a film, for example.

I'm especially interested in mystery VNs. Going through each route and piecing together information from different routes is quite satisfying for me.

The only VN-ish game I've played recently was Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. I thought it was fine, not great, but fine nonetheless. I don't think I'd have the patience to play VNs that have barely to no gameplay elements to it, to be honest.
