Raphtalia's backstory was sad to see. Her story till now really was a hard one. She survived all that to get where she is today.
Next episode we getting the most awaited character of the show?

At first I didn't notice, but then as time went by I was like, *Is that a Swedish word I just heard?*.
Very bizarre indeed. Why would they even have a random Swedish song in an Isekai set in a medieval parallel world? Maybe because it sounds... foreign? I have no idea. I want to find the lyrics though, because it sounded like a lovesong or something (from the words I could hear, since it wasn't that easy to hear). Well, well, at least Sweden is getting some recognition from Japan, that is always cool.

(If someone finds the song, I would be happy if you shared it, because I want to to hear how well/badly it fits with the moment in the anime).

Here's the lyrics that i heard from the episode

Original lyrics
‘’En annan tid, då allt fanns kvar inuti mitt bröst, det är allt som jag. Sitt fjälla fall *Character talking over the song* en polare, under din vrå och jag kan höra hur syrsan spelar. *Character talking over the song* ett annat liv, en bortglömd stad som ingen minns utom jag. *Character talking over the song* i varje träd finns sången kvar och jag kan känna hur skogen gråter.’’

My translation of the lyrics
‘’Another time, when everything were in my breast, that’s all I am. It’s scaling fall *character talking over the song* a buddy, under your corner and i can hear how the mantis plays. *Character talking over the song* another life, a forgotten city that no one remembers except me. *Character talking over the song* in every tree, the song still exist and i can feel how the forest is crying.’’

Maybe that's a poem of some sort. It really matched the scene I'd say.
When someone asks me why I like anime, I'd say Just Because.

Ahahaha, the swedish song caught me completely off guard. Any info on why they picked a song like this?

Väldigt oväntat, lite konstigt, men ganska coolt.

And the MC asking for forgiveness from Ralph because "it's the right thing to do" and seemingly taking the teacher/mentor role despite not understanding any of what she or the others went through or having really any actual grasp of the situation, that's insulting (done presumably for the sake of wanking off about how "cool" the MC is and his "handle" of the situation to the audience, like with most shitty, cheap Isekai stories). And he really showed a lot of emotion for his close friend while she was in complete distress and confronting her past torturer... I don't know. I feel like most people in his position would have been uhhhh, upset or maybe angry?

Good point to bring up. It really emphasizes how little development there has been of Naofumi's character, but the writing is acting like he is much deeper and more complex than he actually is. I think you're right about the motivation, Naofumi is written to be "cool" and in control - regardless of whether it makes sense, and at the expense of any emotional depth to his character. It's the same reason he always has that constipated grimace on his face.

The show is pandering at this point. Any original good ideas that were there have been buried under the garbage writing.

I found Shield Hero to stick out in the beginning because the characters weren't always morally just all the time. It was refreshing. This episode had some development on Raphtalia indeed, and her backstory was tragic. But I just didn't find her choice interesting, because Raphtalia's choice is literally what any other cliche "good" MC would do. Well that's not the route I thought the studio would go with, I guess I just have to deal with that.

I agree that this episode was just way to isekai cliche for my tastes.
Not the backstory though, I kinda liked her backstory.

He was stabbed with the energy blade. In the manga the cut sliced on his fat belly. Either way the only damage he took was from the fall an is just a two stories mansion. You may break a bone but you will not die unless you land on your head.

What's got me more curious is the sense in those guards... It quite clearly showed three guards observing his fall and checking on him? I'd figured they'd have checked their lord's body for a pulse or some sign of life and all that before claiming death, but I guess they really just took one look at their lord-- who as you said, dropped just "two stories-- and said "yup he dead, let's abandon this place and retreat"...

This was an emotional episode, and yet I felt nothing. Maybe if the writer didn’t hammer down with the torture porn and cliches it could have resonated with me.

“If I kill you I will be as bad as you” I hate this troupe with a passion.

I don’t want death as the punishment all the time, but when it’s a generic fat xenophobic bastard with no redeeming qualities, why keep him alive? Raphtalia’s a dumbass if she thought he would atone for his atrocities.

It’s cringe how the writer portrays Raphtalia as this pure, good hearted saint who encourages the poor demi humans to keep living. Also, let’s use this opportunity to wank the Shield Hero as this legendary hero who will save the demi humans, despite Edgelord Hero not initially giving a fuck about them. Of course Raphtalia’s friend wanted to marry the Shield Hero, so like any good friend she’ll fulfil her dream for her!

They butchered Raphtalia’s development at the end by making and all the tramua/guilt she felt killing someone redundant with the other cliche where the generic noble summons an evil monster to kill his enemies, only for the CGI T-Rex to backfire and kill him instead.

Showing how much you have grown as a person was an effective way of showing how much better than Raphtalia was compared to the scumbag. Going down to the cells though must have been pretty challenging for Raphtalia though. Still her determination to overcome her past sure was impressive. The scene where Raphtalia found her friend now nothing more than bones though sure was a heartbreaking one. If anything Naofumi and Raphtalia's meeting really ended up saving both of them from the darkness of this world and allow them to blossom into hero's. The scene where Raphtalia was able to converse with her friend was a nice touch. Lol ironic in that scumbag ended up being killed by his summon karma huh. An excellent ep that while featuring only brief action was also an emotional one as it allowed us to see just how harsh Raphtalia's life and the life of her fellows was prior to her meeting with Naofumi. The pairing of the present scenes with how she acted in the past sure was a perfect combo as it showed just how much she has changed since then.

Don't lower your standards man, that doesn't justify it at all. At least not with how they executed it. 2 minutes after not even purposefully (or even actually? he fell by himself...) killing your ex torturer and all of your friends' one torturer and murderer out of complete self-defense (because he tried to kill you again), you would not go "oh no, I'm just as bad as him now, what have I done". There's nothing about how they did this that's justifiable.

Thank you for being way more concise about it than me. It's really just standard, cliche isekai fare - sacrificing depth in order to pander and make the perfect, ""all good"", most widely relatable protagonist for those viewers who just want someone to place themselves into... And if you develop that character too much, how they gonna do that? He's basically just that standard protag who "wins the heart of every girl he comes across" by just being so different from every other guy at this point. The stuff grosses me out, but you can't really blame the authors - clearly it's successful...

The torture porn in this episode is what I would call emotional manipulation. It's just meaningless suffering for the sake of having something bad happen to character we know nothing about and have no other reason to care for.

On one hand, there's a buttload of changes from the source material that made me uncomfortable, and one of them was so drastic, it was dumb as shit.

On the other hand, that same dumbass decision led to the most emotionally charged scenes in the show thus far.

what a boring episode...
nothing happens. the flashbacks are flooding with no reason. it would have been much better if we knew all raphtalia s past before. Here it just feels like they put it just to make more drama in the scene and that doesn t work at all

also a few characters 's speach are nonsense to me
was it really necessary to make a new character in love with the hero while she never met him? like what the point. It ruins the drama

I'm pretty sure the one she was talking about was Rifana because she couldn't save her and feels guilty of "killing" her. Raphtalia even cried when saying those words and I don't think she would cry because of the one that tortured her.

Never EVER Spare a person who is rotten to the core! Or else they might retaliate, such as when the fat ass took Raphtalia by surprise and has almost sliced her down if only she was not skilled at sword fighting. Good thing this bastard fell to his death

How fucking trashy can a whole damn Kingdom be? After barely surviving the first wave, the demi-humans find the conviction to rebuild their village, their lives. But oh no no no! Fucking Knights slaughtered them and sell them off as slaves and torture-dummies.

The backstory is actually very solid! They way the ep handled the pieces of flashbacks and yet still progressing the present story made this backstory really good. Made me care and saddened to see Raphtalia losing her friend and breaking down for a while for not being able to do anything. This ep is really a huge step forward for Raphtalia's character development. She even got a clear goal too now, which is really exciting! Maybe Naofumi will lead an army of demi-humans in the future!

Never EVER Let go if a person who is rotten to the core, even if they 'died'! Turns out the fat ass is alive and intentionally break a seal to let some dino-monster out. Only to be stepped on by it... Lol, that'll do for the weekly dose of satisfaction.

Great episode again! Love how the studio enhance the back story of Raphtalia but when it comes to the scene where Raphtalia is going to slice Idol is kinda cliche. I like those scenes tbh because they have a point, the "If you kill him right now, will it satisfy you?" type of line has a really strong message.

Melty realizing what's really happening in the country is really important because she can have a motivation to work hard if she become the Queen one day.

They've been crying harem just because a male character has multiple members of the opposite sex in his party while ignoring the fact that harem anime involves female characters vying for the male MC's romantic affection.
So should someone tell him about Keel's gender then? It's not like some huge plot point in the story or anything like that.

Apparently I'm not the only one who felt more and more...bored (i don't find a better expression) with the episodes going. The series had a nice and fresh start in a familiar setting and now it gets more and more chliched.

Why the heck didn't Raphtalia stab him? It would make sense and everyone would be happy. This crap about being just as bad as the torturer is bullshit. Even more so if Karma kills the bad guy anyway. That's cheap writing. I want a story where the character makes a choice and has to live with it.
Meaning, let him live and face it that he might torture again or kill him and live with it.

The second major point I couldn't like the episode is a tiny little detail which ruined the whole sobbing backstory. Raphtalia tells us she can't smile like she used to and milliseconds later she smiles like she did many times before. If you have such a cruel backstory for a charakter, don't let her be so cheerful, then explain why it is that way and then show us how she gradually changes and can smile again.

I also really hope they explain why everyone hates the Shield Hero and has a good reason for that other than: so Shield Hero can shine. For now it looks like this is the whole point and that would be a total shame.

Yeah, you are probably the most reasonable shield fan who read the source material and be honest about its fault and merit. This, why can't we have more of this? I had given up on quality episodes that scale up to the first 4 of the series, and I had already ranted over this the last episode, but this week's episode flipped the table on me and I never saw it coming, and you know what, that's immensely satisfying, like, the show is really not all that predictable like I ranted about.
I'm a bit upset that I got spoiled on what has become of Rifana-chan from last week's episode's comment section, it would have definitely got me even harder than this.
I'm super happy that we got this much quality from a storytelling perspective after all this time, and would hope for the series to continue at the same pace.
I hope Keel-kun gets to join the party with them, it's time we've had a dude join in, it would be cool to see his leveled up grown-up design.
That psychic torture lover got what he deserved at the end, Raphtalia's sword was going to slay so!e big shots, and he doesn't have the preliminary honor to be slain by the same sword that would probably live throughout the ages and get its story told on a long term basis. “what happened to that evil chub dad?”, “Ahh, he just fell down to his death, ugh, scratch that, he got stepped on by a mosquito, the very one he helped release, one very horrifying like the CGI it was”, a lame end deserving for a lame sorry excuse for a turd.

Daamn.. The feels in this episode. Raphthalia-chan's cry was heartbreaking. Also I have a question. Keel-kun is the same age as Raphtalia, right? When they were kids they seemed like they had the same age. But now Raphtalia looks a lot older than him. Is it because he was malnutritioned and depressed that his growth was delayed, whereas Raphtalia had the chance to eat and train and be happy? That helped her grow faster?

This episode was painful to watch...
Out of nowhere we have this Rifana character be someone super close to Raphtalia. If she was such a significant person to the development of Raphtalia's personality, why is the first mention of her the episode before she dies (and it is pretty obvious she would die). They were obviously trying to have a "feels" episode, but it was horribly forced.
Then we get to Idol, who gets painted in just about the worst possible light (entirely one sided evil character), but Raphtalia won't kill him despite him torturing her and her closest friends? The whole "if I kill him, I will be no better than him" dialogue was absolutely ridiculous, and clearly supposed to be a moral lesson targeted towards small children. And are they really claiming that Raphtalia hasn't killed anyone, (despite repeatedly fighting humans, and leveling up on combat to level 40)?

Perhaps the worst episode so far. Felt like an episode targeted at preteens when the premise of the show started out slightly more adult. Hopefully there won't be more episodes like this.

Is it because he was malnutritioned and depressed that his growth was delayed, whereas Raphtalia had the chance to eat and train and be happy? That helped her grow faster?

Did you forget that Raphtalia only grew older because she leveled up by fighting for Naofumi? Keel is still young because they never leveled up like Raphtalia did.

extremely disappointed about the fat guy.
The manga version was 1000% better...
(FYI: In the manga raphtalia immediatelly stabs him in the shoulder, then they have the talk and ultimately raphtalia stabs him with the magic sword, actively pushing him out the window with naofumi rescuing her from falling)
The rest of the episode was great
yes I also agree the scene in the manga makes Raphtalia look like a woman who is thirsty for revenge, but I like it because the nobleman deserves it, apparently the anime studio wants to make Raphtalia look like a kind-hearted woman and doesn't look like a gasai yuno character

That was an emotional ride especially when Raphtalia found out that Rifana couldn't make it. The episode did a good job establishing what kind of person she was prior to the waves and how she got to where she is now.

The one negative was the obvious CG in the CG dinosaur. It definitely looks intimidating, but the CG just clashes with the artstyle.
yeah CGI is annoying but anime studios always use it like in BERSERK, AOT, and OPM season 2 mostly use a lot of CGI

Pretty meh episode overall, hope next episode will be better. Also, really hope that Naofumi removes the slave seal he put on Raphtalia (hard to say if Filo can be controlled without it) soon.

awful episode, ridiculous fight and that emotional bullshit almost made me fall asleep. how is this anime rated 8,4 out of 10? the first like 6 episodes were good but now it only gets worse. the biggest disappointment of the season.

i know i say this almost every episode, but fuuuck this soundtrack is soooo good. I can just picture it over one of those old gloomy cel animated dementia anime perfectly.

sadly however, this summer daydream is not reality. this ethereal soundtrack is merely the background to a overly-melodramatic character arc in an anime that has at best normal art. guh-guh-guh-gayyyyyyyyyy

tis really is sad this show is so average

Good grief this has gone from mildly entertaining/something to watch on Wednesday to just laughably bad. Oh well I've invested 15 weeks might as well see how much worse this trainwreck gets
