Mio is a girl with a pure heart and good as Sonia and sacrifices for others. She deserved to get help to stop being a prostitute and to be happy.

Damn this episode, really sad about the girl and Hyakkimaru too. Has he's touch back in the ep before and already feels what it's like to lose his leg in a really painful way... and his voice back only adds to that. The girl... what a sad and cruel reality in those times.

Lol predicted she was whore when she was washing her pussy in the river and saying she works at night for the army gave it away too. Decent episode tho I'm not really feeling these episodic stories, have to forgive it because it's an old ass manga

Nice catch, I didn't realize she's washing her pussy,

Well, now that was depressive as shit... not only for Mio's situation but also for Hyakkimaru regaining his voice and the first thing that leaves his mouth were screams of pure agony because he lost a limb.

And regarding Mio, I already supposed what was that "job" she was doing from the start but as someone already said, it really sucks when that assumption becomes a realization. I really feel bad for her and the kids, I just hope them to be safe during the upcoming war but I have this pessimistic feeling that this all will only conclude in tragedy.

Other than that, due to the emotions the episode made me feel, I have to say it really did a very good job.

honestly, I can see it being a 24 episode series. Heck, i can see it being a 60-90 episode series like rurouni kenshin.

I mean it's basically this generation's rurouni kenshin.

If he cut his leg, then he is going backwards. That was really careless of Hyakkimaru, so he will have to grow it back.

I'm glad he has his voice though.

In every episode he gains another one of his senses, this anime at most would be a 24 ep one but how would they do that i wonder.

And hell, this episode is really sad

That's probably the case. I'm guessing Jukai taught him somehow or that's just part of his special abilities. Perhaps we will find out in the next episode when he speaks?

Yeah...or it will be another detail that won't be explained because they're rushing this... If Hyakkimaru starts speaking out of nowhere it will be a a sudden surprise if without any explanation...

Sushantbro said:
Yea this adaptation is rushed instead of 25 demons there will be 12 demons.

Yes I know that fact, but what I don't understand is why they're making 24 episodes and are rushing so much when there are only 12 demons. I know there's more than just the demons but I think they didn't need that. Unless the informations I took from 3 places about having 24 episodes are fake. x'D

Make that 4 people who didn't see it coming lol! I thought that maybe she was doing watch duty at the border or something, but I was clearly wrong. I agree @DeeAngel that it did feel a little rushed in this episode...

Yes! Exactly! And yes, the first 3 episodes looked pretty balanced while the last 2 were too many things happening without pauses or meaning for them to happen, principally the sudden appearances and disappearances of the monk...

Yeah the monk keeps coming and going, which threw me off more in episode 4 (like lol where did he go??)

And @Sushantbro I hope it is more than 12 or 13 episodes! I feel they'd really have to rush it to complete it in that amount of time.

Interesting take on the "love interest" story... but I prefered the 69 flashback (eps 4-5?) even though it was itself so-so.
This Mio was... creepy. Her child-like super-smooth face on a big body and living dead look kept disturbing me the whole episode.

So, the fief disasters are confirmed to have to do with Hyakkimaru's restoration.

The monk and Mio appeared in Hyakkimaru's flashback episode of the manga.
Hyakkimaru saw him again quite later on. Actually, he doesn't often appears in the manga.
the anime writer apparently put all the episodes into the current timeline and tried to add him into the episodes if they could.
That's why he appears and disappears.

BTW, he appeared in Black Jack too.

Loved this episode! It's kind of sad how he lost his leg after regaining it though. I wonder if it's possible to regrow it still? Hyakkimaru is able to regain his senses/limbs but there's nothing that says he can regenerate them once they're severed.

- Guess I'm the only anime-only fan that thought Mio in the OP was Dororo's grown version (and somehow speculating Hyakkimaru would not age due to his abnormal situation)
- Very sad story of Mio, not sure if she could stay long since she only has a few cameos in the OP but not ED
-Great progress of Hyakkimaru becoming a human: gaining sense of hearing, expression, voice and sense of pain. Character development as he insists to fight for a better home for Mio and the children, despite his wounds.
This "humanizing" progress reminds me of Katanagatari, which the protagonist also slowly develops from a "weapon" to a full human being throughout the story.

-Side note: Deepest sympathy to Dororo: Hyakkimaru covering his ear upon hearing her voice just after Mio left despite all the care Dororo has done in the episodes up to date.
There was the possibility, but in the original anime the girl was actually a girl that took care of orphan children and was killed in a fire started by soldiers along with the children. This is something that it happened before meeting Dororo and was more emotional than this version. The downside is the original anime gives Hyakkamaru more superpowers like telepathy and I think this version wants to get rid of these

Um sorry I got a bit lost. Are you referring to the 1969 anime? Then is the 1969 anime sticking more to the original manga in terms of the sequence of events? I'm also a bit lost on the sequence of events:

It's messed up everytime he gets something back, it's always steeped in human tragedy. First noise he hears with his hearing comes back is the girl crying over her dead brother. First time he can talk he's screaming in pain. The more human he becomes the more pain seems to follow. Really like this series.

Dunno how anyone wouldn't have been able to guess her job. What other job would she have at a soldier's camp. They're not going to give up their rations to her for washing a few pots...

Felt sorry for her but didn't really think poorly of the soldiers (except maybe they could have had the courtesy to go one at a time). Those soldiers are just waiting to hear a horn blow and thats it, they're charging through a field and having their guts spill out.

Now that I think about it. I don't think she's usually held down like that and she probably gets with one guy at a time and is more consensual. This time Mio seems to be struggling like she regretted her decision and tried to leave but the guys had her pinned down so all she could is sing to get through the experience. It's sad that most people knew she was a prostitute but to actually see it especially from Dororo's pov was messed up and this is going to scar Dororo for a while. I'm guessing the other kids don't know what she's doing but I feel like the main kid who wanted to go with Dororo knew that Mio was selling her body.

I'm binge watching other anime right now, and I can't wait for these episodes to come up. Episode 5 was interesting. Up until now, I've enjoyed Hyakkimaru's silent intensity—gave me the chills in a good way. His first utterance is yelling in pain. Wow, this series is AMAZING and simply gorgeous.

This was a good episode, even though I figured it out real quick I was extremely disgusted by Mio’s “job”. Seriously there is no excuse to sell yourself just to make money, she has other choices to make money but she assumes that’s the “only way”, especially when you got fucking kids to take care of, it’s just absolutely disgusting and despicable. For people saying “oh poor mio” are really naive, she made the decision to please those men even IF she didn’t want to do it, but what happens when one of the kids get curious to see what job she does at night(like Dororo did), how can she explain to the kid what they saw, it’s going to traumatize them for the rest of their life. Moving on from that, that was really brutal for hyakkimaru to lose his leg after his fight with the monster. Him screaming from the pain made me unsettled.

i had a slicest idea of what she was working at late night but never really gave a thought that was prostitution. Coming to an understand it would be the first thing to across tbh. I mean what would a poor woman do to sustain all those kids alone?

Basically it's just prostitution.

It's hard to define whether it's rape or not. If she makes consent to let herself being fucked in return for something, then it's really not rape.

I know she doesn't want to, but it's for survival.

Rape with the context being done right. At war time which human life worth like dust, the only thing a homeless girl like that can do is selling her body.

This is very realistic portrayed of war. If someone call this edgy, they're probably really naive or childish.

Definitely overlooked that as I didn't expect her situation til the boy mentioned her work. My mind probably thought she was just cleaning clothes or something without noticing she wasn't holding anything to begin with. Who'd have known she was cleaning something else the first time.

So he gets back his voice, and then loses his real foot/leg. This kid can't catch a break, can he?

Also, Mio's job was pretty clear from the beginning. She works at night for the soldiers. The way she adjusted her collar when Hyakkimaru seemed to be "looking" at her. etc.

Tbh, when we first saw her it's not exactly clear what she is doing in the water. So, you can drop the "I'm very smart that I understood her job from the very beginning lol" act. Though the later talk when the kid mentions she is working at night is a dead giveaway.

Had an idea she was mature in that sort of way from the river scene but turned into almost surety that she was a prostitute when night job was mentioned n latter when Hyakkimaru looked at her and requested her to sing.
Wonder how Hyakki will recover the lost part of his leg tho, that was unexpected.
