I had this on my mind for a while now... Guys, why is it that some of you are asking questions such as In what order should I watch it?, Should I watch this before watching that?, Should I watch this at all?, and so on...

First of all, number #1 rule in what order should you watch anything, be it anime, or live action series, or whatever...

That is if you want most correct way of watching, doesn't matter if we are even talking about prequels that came afterwards; of course, you can always watch however you want, though.

As for questions such as asking about need to watch something that came before in order to watch something that is airing currently, for instance, once again, yeah, you can always hop right on this newest thing, but it is always recommendable to see previous installments - universe won't explode if you do it.
And just because something came afterwards, doesn't mean you will enjoy it more.

It doesn't work that way.

And in general, asking questions is good thing, but if you keep on asking questions such as in title of this thread, like should you watch something at all, you are gonna miss a lot of good stuff you would maybe even love, especially since we are talking about people you will most likely never meet.

I can take myself for example, actually...

I already stated numerous times that character Akemi Homura is for me the worst thing ever to happen to anime, so disgusting that I would recommend to just avoid entire franchise, just because of her, even though I actually think Madoka series is something really good.

...

At the moment, Homura has 17343 favorites, that is how many people don't agree with me; now imagine if they still didn't watch series themselves, but first heard from me to ignore that series, maybe not everyone, but I believe some would.

Wouldn't it kind of be shame for someone to miss for them possibly enjoyable anime just because some psycho duck told them it sucks?

So please, do me that favour, stop asking these kind of questions, in the end, only you will lose.

...

But then again, maybe I'm wrong; you can discuss it...

Enjoy in thread.

I agree that asking about whether to watch a show or not to random people is stupid. It makes sense to ask a friend that knows your taste, and possibly have a similar one, since then that opinion has some weight, and even then it should be taken with the grain of salt. In the end best way to decide is to just try it and see for oneself.

I do disagree however that order of release is always better. There are some shows that I enjoyed a lot more when I shuffled it a bit. For example Monogatari. I watched Kizumono first, and just then the rest in release order and I enjoyed it more. That was the second time I tried to watch it. First time I started with Bake and dropped it. It's not a good introduction to the series I think. Another such example is Fate/Zero which is prequel to F/SN and knowing what happens there makes F/SN more interesting in my opinion than not knowing, even if one can watch without knowing it as it was intended that way originally. But I don't think it's more enjoyable that way.

However yes, some thing may be shuffled and still extremely enjoyable to watch in release order, such as latter Monogatari seasons. Therefore asking others opinion on that with anime that has many seasons, shuffled time lines and the like makes sense I think.

Is not exactly like that. Generally when a franchise gets an anime adaptation of the main series, other spin-off and stuff got adaptations as well, and sometimes they are better than the original, or don't need you to watch the main series, or even are well constructed prequels. One example I can think now is Fate/Zero, zero is definily better than stay/night and I already recommended it to some of my friends and they agree with me. Also I think it would be a very interesting experience watching Steins;Gate up to episode 23B and then going to Steins;Gate 0. So I can't agree that the order of release is always the best option(although is the easier one).

All of these are entirely subjective, but the best advice is: if in doubt, watch it, and watch it in the order it was released. You don't want to miss out on something amazing just because someone else didn't enjoy it, and the order it was released is usually the order it was intended to be watched.

Well, I had this issue with the White album and White album 2, where the scores are so different and I didn't know if I need to watch the first in order to understand the second. Because people asked the question where to start or if they were related in anyway I could make a decision.

So I disagree that making this "dumb questions" are always bad or you always need to watch the show in the order of airing.

Watching in release order is the right thing to do in 99% of the cases...but there are few exceptions.

Like skipping Deen's F/SN, watching Haruhi's first season in chronological order (this makes it subjectively better or at least more approachable...when rewatching you can go by the original order) and watching Soukou Kihei Votoms: Koei Futatabi before Soukou Kihei Votoms: Gen-ei Hen.

I bet there are others.

A lot of people are new to anime, so it's normal asking that or such more.

Yeah, but wouldn't it be easier for them to search for one of the thousands of already answered threads instead of making another one and waiting for someone to answer them?

Obviously they don't know how to do it, even they should know Google is the best place to find every answer /_/

Order of release is good and all but when you're talking about fma, should you watch the first one? Or fmab? I think it's nonsensical to watch the first fma if you want to enjoy fmab. And why should you watch the first fate? It's done poorly.
Sometimes even order of release isn't good.

I've enjoyed watching Suzumiya Haruhi on chronological order and i think that's the best way to watch it.

i need to try this now

does it make the spell more powerful if i recite the lord's prayer backwards? and do i need to reverse the individual letters or just the words? does it work to just record myself saying it forwards and play it backwards? and the same for the anime itself i guess

Bad title OP.
OP must love light novels, because that's an appropriately long title for one.

1 - Some shows have skippable content
2 - Not always the broadcast order it's the best, a lot of times extra episodes are added to fill some plot holes, so you might want to check them first

You got it all wrong. You have to watch it backwards from the final scene of the final episode while playing Stairway to Heaven backwards. Make sure you have the song on repeat. Dim the lights, too.

1. Can I skip filler episodes if I also sacrifice a goat?

2. What happens if the anime itself stars demons? Do I get angels instead?

Thanks to the internet and all the various discussion boards, chat rooms, etc. that come with it, many of these series that get asked about here have numerous "best watching order" posts/blogs.
Some say it's the airing order, some say it's the story's chronological order, etc.

So my guess is that people come to a site like MAL, which is dedicated to anime/manga, to ask people who are more likely to be knowledgeable about anime than some random person on some random general-discussion social media site/app.

You're never too old to watch anime.
If I ever stop watching anime, check my pulse I'm likely dead.

I wake up with coffee & anime, I go to sleep with coffee & anime.

Sorry if my sarcasm is bad, it's not my first language.

Some shows have skippable content.
Some franchises have movies that adapt the source material better than the original series.
Some franchises are just confusing in order of release or have multiple adaptations of the same story.

1. Demons love filler. No skipping. Goats are fine but what you really need to sacrifice is a loli.

2. Demons is demons.

Why I would ask someone else if I should watch a show? The fuck am I supposed to do, ask the anime studio? Not really a reliable source. I won't pick anime at random, I don't have that kind of time. You have to ask someone. Looking at MAL ratings or looking at an anime's popularity or reputation is basically asking someone else too. Actually, it's like asking everyone who watched it.

Although I do agree that release order is generally the better one and should be the default, I do think there’s a solid argument for chronological order in some cases.

I doubt most of the people who you want to see this thread will see it, though. It’s pretty rare for AD regulars to make threads like the ones you mention.

Because people hear shit like "don't watch it in the broadcast order" and then they get all super anxiety about watching the show wrong. It snowballs from there.
