Hmm, an interesting story about a daughter and her father. It's just too bad that her daughter didn't live up long enough in the end.

The way Violet shed tears felt very human even for her. That scene with Violet flying with the umbrella and with the water is well animated imo especially with the body movement and raw visual quality.

Yes more episode like this where they adapt this to fit their vision of the story then last episode where it felt like an abridged version.

Really interesting decision to have both Violet and the writers emotional stage rolled back for the anime adaptation. They basically changed a narrative suited for an introduction episode to a mid season episode without any awkward adaptation transitions.
Where Violet was past her initial PTSD/grief phase and the writer with his alcoholism in the novel, in the anime it portrayed them right before that specific emotional stage of their lives which provided a more interesting perspective to the narrative.

Violet learning grief and loss after empathizing with the writer's past and then learning of Gilbert's fate serves as a better use of the original source material since the source only served as an introduction to Violet in the novel, where as now it serves as an excellent supplementary story to Violet's emotional journey.

Yeah they changed the story so she isn't wearing the dress in the adaptation since originally in the novel the dress served to make a tasteless "anime girl is nude while changing joke!" after she gets wet and had to change clothes at the end of the 1st chapter (I know it also served to further emphasize Violet looking more like the deceased daughter, and to add a funny joke about Violet not being a robot in the novel but it really isn't needed at this point in the story.)

This episode started funny with the author being a drunk and Violet hiding his alcohol but it turned very serious towards the second half and in a very good but sad way.
It was another good episode with a very intense ending and i really enjoyed it.

The truth is out and one should wonder how Violet will overcome it since she was already in denial.

I thought this episode will be a little of a fall from last week but it seems like I was very wrong...

This episode was very moving and emotional like I half-cried out this entire episode. It felt very chilling.

The sound is amazing as always, the animation is even better than always especially the lake's beautiful visuals and that scene with Violet running on the lake with that umbrella.

We even have more development in the overall story and Violet as a character.

5/5 This episode deserves it. Simply amazing.

This was a very beatiful.

This episode adapt the first chapter of the novel, right? Is the only one I read, but I remembered that Violet should wear a dress. In one of the PV, there was this scene, but in the episode was cut?

Looks like they cut out the scene where Oscar walks in on Violet naked. I think that was a good decision. Don't get me wrong I love my fanservice, but that scene felt so out of place in the novel and would feel even more out of place in this episode.

I answered above but that commercial was for the novel and not the anime. Anime drastically changed alot of timeline and story events so any commercial after the 2nd novel commercial is for the tv anime only.

I am not crying. I am not. T_T

This episode was extremely powerful. There was incredible character development for her already in this episode from the get go. She was showing a remarkably compassionate side to her compared to her stoic personality at the start of the anime. Small things like saying that she would eat later instead of she can go on without eating, from hiding the drinks and then coming to terms that she was burning up on the insides were magnificently captured.

She didn't act like a soulless person and for once, she wasn't behaving like a robot for the first time yet for her to learn about Gilbert's demise from Mrs. Evergarden at the end of the episode, confronting Claudia for keeping it hidden from her and the completely denying the fact; I was not prepared for all these. And I was already heartbroken with the extremely sad story of this episode. T_T

This one really went all the way to impress.

They incorporated novel content with some of their original content perfectly.

I was a bit worried from the last episode that they might just rush chapters from the novel, but this one was really well done.

Watching Violet crying was quite emotional, I don't remember that in the novel but considering we're half-way through the series they've fitted this well.

I'm guessing they didn't include Violet's shower scene as it may affect the serious mood a bit.

First good episode of the series to me, I can't say I was close to tear up, but I actually felt invested in this story, Violet finally showing some emotions helped with that too.

The way for Violet to find out that the major is (most likely) dead was pretty lame tho, but other than that I don't have much to complain about, I hope it keeps the trend for the rest of the series.

Finally! An actual good episode. The previous episodes were decent, but this one was quite better. It didn't brought me to tears or anything, but there were some feels. The animation was beautiful and Violet got some wonderful character development. I hope the next episodes are like this.

This episode wasn't a tearjerker for me but it was an amazingly beautiful episode.
Both the story and the visuals were amazing.
The sound effects were almost bone chilling, especially when she made contact with the water during those "three steps" she made.
Also the character voices were amazing. Great voice acting. Absolutely wonderful. The music was amazing as well... really puts you in the moment.

The Oscar arc?
Eh, it was just as rushed as last episode. Very brisk, doesn't allow for the impact of his sad background to wallow in us and really get a feel for the guy. It's mostly the visual impact dictating the feelz!
So instead, we finally get Violet's moral breakdown! That took its time!
But that's not over, we just had to have Grandma Evergarden to mention the "late" Major. Because Hodgins clearly didn't instruct them about the only person Violet obsesses about. Very conscientious on part of the adoptive caretakers, no? But hey, we're getting a breakdown anyway, so why not drive it full force.

The best part: Violet's development process happens off screen and we're back to another client next week like nothing happened.

If that doesn't happen, we'll get some actual fleshing out on her background as a meat grinder, that's always welcomed.

It's a good episode for Violet, now that she has a personality and some actual values, but I am still very apprehensive and not sure what they mean to do with them. The show overall has been too inoffensive for it to be anything truly profound.

From an anime watcher only perspective, there is a 50/50 chance Gilbert is alive with the old "cant find the body but must be dead" Hollywood trick. Add in some amnesia and you got a good chance of a come back.

A strong emotional ambush on the viewers at around 16:00 until especially around 17:10.

Violet has shown emotions since episode 1.

Yeah, but the difference is those emotions were only for Gilbert at the beginning. Her growth can be actually seen over the past few episodes bit by bit and it all started with her initiative to write that letter for Luculia's brother.

Notice the idea of her development was also conveyed with how she is now aware that she was rude towards Mrs. Evergarden in episode 1.

This episode just marks the overall growth of her as a person, becoming more human and I have to give credit to the direction for that. I was expecting the development would be dragged on but now we have half the anime to explore how she acts after her growth as a person. As a whole, now the anime is looking so much better. The only episode that felt out of place/redundant for me was the episode where she went to Iris' village (episode 4). They have now produced three back to back fantastic episodes, the last two being the best.

I don't care about what others thinking about this anime right now. This episode made me finally fall in love with this anime.

On to another topic: Violet is definitely one the most beautiful female characters I have seen in anime. She looked dazzling in this episode. ❤

This show just gets better and better. Violet continues to grow, probably more in this episode than any yet. She was beginning to understand the man she was writing for. She even was able to pinpoint he was hiding grief and used the word "heart" to express where he was hiding it. That scene when she was running on the water was all around beautiful.

It finally happened... she now knows Major Gilbert died ;-; I hope more emotion comes from this in the next episode.

I'm kind of into plays, there are a couple I like, Pirate's of Penzance, The Mikado.

I had a feeling the ending would have something to do with the Parasol, the moment the flashback with the daughter talking about crossing with it.

Wow Violet somehow actually made it pretty far across.

Feel & emotions of this episode over 9000, both for the writer & for Violet, she know understand so much more than before.

Once again Violet changes someone life for the better.

Easily the best episode to date and the second half was especially really powerful.

The part where Violet fulfills the daughter's wish by jumping across the lake using the leaves was fantastic. The entire thing coupled with the Dad remembering his daughter and crying was absolutely brilliant. Soundtrack was fantastic as well. That was by far the best scene in the entire show so far. Really powerful.
I also really really liked that one small shot of the ripples in the water when Violet falls into the lake, it looked beautiful.

It was interesting to see Violet reflect on what killing really meant.

That ending was pretty sad, Violet now knows that Gilbert may not be alive. :(

I'll be honest, not my favorite episode, but still good overall. Before you bring out the torches and pitchforks, let me explain.

First things first, I'll state the obvious, this show's visual presentation, imo, has only gotten better and better with each episode, and this episode was no exception. That one scene with Violet leaping over the pond for Oliver was both touching and visually breathtaking. The incredible stereoscopic shot, the water animation, and the overall emotion packed into that scene combined with the perfectly suited soundtrack made my jaw drop. It could possibly be one of the most stimulating/dynamic shots out of any anime that I have seen, and I say that without exaggeration.

However, one incredible moment in the episode does not account for how a lot of this episode's drama just fell flat for me. Don't get me wrong, I did feel quite emotional at parts, but parts of it felt a little...forced. This is the first time I have felt this while watching this show, and I am honestly quite surprised. Every other episode handled its drama extremely well. I felt the main reason why the drama didn't strike the right chords for me was because of just how rushed Oliver's story was adapted. It felt more of a plot device to further Violet's character than actually giving us some more insight to Oliver and his past relationship/trauma with her daughter. The ending for his arc also felt super abrupt, and certain parts felt distinctly ham-fisted to squeeze as much stuff in.

I believe Oliver could have been very intriguing character with a compelling backstory that could've been explored to a greater extent to make him seem more rounded, and he deserved at least one whole episode to himself (without the OP and ED cutting the runtime). I mean seriously. This episode barely had 16 minutes to tell the entirety of his story, and it just felt like wasted potential imo. We literally learned NOTHING about the type of person Olivia (Oliver's daughter) was like other than very brief flashbacks. I also felt a lot of Oliver's character development and details of his backstory/current life were left out or cut short, so we are left with little to sympathize with other than the surface level: oh this guy's daughter died, so now he is depressed and an alcholic. Let's feel sorry for him :'(

They could've spent all 23 minutes of the episode runtime dedicated to Oliver's arc, and then spend the beginning of the next episode exploring Violet's development deeper and her reflection on her past of murder in the war. I just don't understand why they had to force that whole "big reveal" in the end of the episode just to end with a cliffhanger. It just felt wrong, as now there are so many new plot threads left hanging without resolution, making the episode feel ultimately unsatisfying.

One thing I can praise this show for is for gradually showing us Violet's development as a character from an emotionless weapon of war to someone actually capable of showing emotions like smiling/crying and impacting other's lives in a positive way. This episode showcases the important development of all: Violet being able to reflect on her own actions and admitting to her wrongdoings. The scene where she broke down after realizing that the the act of mindlessly killing the soldiers in war "prevented them from keeping promises of their own" was such a great character moment for her, and I can't help but feel proud of how far she has come.

tldr; presentation was phenomenal, but that doesn't not make up for the drama feeling forced and even a little undeserved. Oliver get a short end of the stick for his story, and deserved better. Overall, the pacing, especially towards the end, was rushed and unsatisfying.

Still looking forward to the next episode.
