i plan on watching the original version sometime in the future but i want to start on this first since it is airing. but my question is, is this a sequel, unrelated to original version, or what? basically can i go into this version without watching the old one?

Yes you can. But I suggest another thing that if you watch this (the remake version), then also consider watching the original version later on. Both version tells the story in different style.

well i did say i was planning on watching the original version. i just wanted to know if it was alright to watch this version if i didn't know anything about this series beforehand. so it's the same story? i thought the original was already good though, why are they remaking it?

They both are the same plot so that is why you can start either with the new or original one. You haven't watched the new one yet (not even the first episode) then I recommend to go with the original one then do watch this very later.

This is a reboot. Probably they're trying to follow up on where the novel goes, but without the loose ends that came with the Anime that can't be replicated in a sequel without the same production staff.

Yeah, it's absolutely designed to be perfectly digestible for a newcomer. Really, even if it were a true sequel, it'd be business suicide for it to expect the viewer to see the 2003 show first.

The LN author: "It's not a sequel or a second season, it should be considered a completely new remake." "I can't say exactly what will be in the new series right now, but we have nothing against animating stories from the previous series just because we've already done them. There is a chance that some stories you've seen in the first anime will have the chance to come back." http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2017-09-11/interview-keiichi-sigsawa/.121076

The title of the second episode is
, so I guess we're doing that again? If so, that could be a good thing, since I saw an LN reader express dissatisfaction with the way that story was handled in 2003.

The series is almost entirely episodic. They can be viewed in any order, so you can jump into this new adaptation without watching the original. Though, it may be worth going back to watch the original if the new episodes interest you.

Yes, but you have to watch episode 4 from the First season to understand the Second season.

This is what I plan on doing.

So this is an episode series. Thanks for that as well. I think I'm really going to like these. :)

Yes you can. Kino's Journey is a pretty episodic series by nature anyway, and having watched the first episode of the new season, they are designing it so that if you never watched the original, you can still get into this.

Also, it is a reboot sort of. They will be retelling a few of the stories from the original series, but the first episode was one that had never been animated before, so they are not simply retreading what the first series did. So you also won't feel it's redundant when you go back and watch the first series.

That's one of the episodes that's going to be adapted again actually, so it's not necessary to watch the original version since you'll get to see it in the new series. The list of episode titles is here.

I strongly doubt the new series will manage to be as good as the first series so I guess, watching the old first will make you think less of the current series.
