What combonation of two genres almost never work together?

I would have to guess horror and ecchi since horror is more serious and ecchi is almost never serious, hence it tends to go along better with comedy.

Idk, Sankarea is my #1 and it's tagged as horror and ecchi. Though debatable in both cases, I'd say. I think a horror/ecchi could work, though, because blood and titties feels like a good combo. Dunno about psychological horror, probably wouldn't like that approach to an ecchi anime.

----

Errrrrr, idk, I haven't really came across anything I'd say can't go well together somehow myself and can only really postulate, which would be psychological horror/ecchi, I guess.

I'm watching it atm and I think it's great

Wasn't expecting it to be quite as fanservicey though, which I guess is just another case of "the ecchi tag on MAL is a joke," but then again I'm still kind of early into it so it might town down that sort of thing later

Rokka no Yuusha is the only work I know that manages to combine epic fantasy (the kind of fantasy about Chosen Ones and saving the world) with a classical detective. It's hard to be a proper detective in a world where anything is possible with magic, after all.

Never seen those, the closest I know of is Irresponsible Captain Tylor, but it's a stretch to call it a harem.

Still though, if they are.. we've got what, 3 possible contenders for that cross of genres? Pretty rare I think?

Psychological + ecchi.

It doesn't work.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.

Horror & ecchi can go well together. 2 of my top manga's are horror ecchi and I really liked Sankarea & HOTD anime.

Ecchi moments and Lust murder work pretty well for me.

Geneshaft isn't really a harem. But their scientists determined that for a harmonious society (even on a warship) there should be 10 females per 1 male. Among many other silly things.

Vandread is, however, a proper harem, about a guy (from a planet populated only by guys), getting into a battleship from a planet of women. They win the war by combining their mecha suggestively or something.

Actually, I quite disagree with you on this. I think the majority of action anime have some slice of life. And here are a few good ones.

Hunter x Hunter 2011
Magi the Labyrinth of Magic
Grimgar
SukaSuka
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Toaru Kagaku no Railgun

MAL might not give most if not all of them the slice of life tag but they all use it to some extent. Some more than others. Plus I trust MAL on nothing. HxH and Fate Zero PG-13? Silly MAL.

It may be possible if you use light horror elements. The new It movie wasn't really soothing all the time, but it was a nice and kinda sentimental coming of age/comedy with horror elements that added to the overall experience rather than making it silly. Kinda like a Stand by Me with a psychopath clown and cheap jumpscares.

Almost every story has some elements of other genres in them, without being those genres. Berserk has its comedic moments, Fullmetal Alchemist too, Natsume's Book of Friends has horror elements, but neither of those series have those different elements co-exist as different genres.
I was saying that having a full-blown Iyashikei and full-blown horror is impossible, but you can have an Iyashikei with some horror and vice versa. Just not on equal footing as genres.

Someone mentioned a series with Yuri and Yaoi... it can work, like we got a couple, the boy is gay while the girl is also gay, the only reason why they started dating is because they're the most popular students at their school and people wouldn't stop bugging them on how they seem perfect for each other (also revealing their sexuality would cause many to frown upon them) so they ended up dating, but not out of love just to get people to stop being annoying but they still promise each other if they can find a partner for them who is also interested in the same sex they'll be fine with breaking up. I dunno, just gotta think a bit hard to make this stuff work (also I think there's an online manga series that features both Yaoi and Yuri couples...)

Well, you get vampires, elder gods and a token human girl (all of them looking like cute girls) to meet, drink tea with cakes together, and find out the horrors aren't that bad after all.
Also, I wonder if Gakkougurashi fits Iyashikei genre. It sure is a CGDCT anime.

It isn't really cringe - but I would also neither call it a "true harem" nor "ecchi" (but the ED). It plays with situations known from such genres, but it doesn't play them straight.

Still it shows how easily harem + ecchi + mecha/scifi can/could be in the same show.

(I did not watch season2 because hated the drop in art&animation too much, but season 1 I found it entertaining, sometimes funny, sometimes interesting. and quite impressive 3D for a tv-series from back then - makes me wonder about their budget.)

--------------
rarely done, but at least 2 out of 3 were successful: mecha + shoujo.
