Exclamations like "goddammit," or "dear god," or even "holy shit." Is it foolish for nonreligious people to use them?

Is it foolish for religious folk to use them if their holy book forbids them from doing that?

Yes, but most unbiased people already agree with that.
Be thankful for the wisdom granted to you.

Why would it be? If it sounds right and gets the meaning across why not say it?

That depends on whose religion/atheistic worldview properly reflects reality with regards to such exclamations.

If Christianity properly reflects reality, for example, then it wouldn't matter whether you're a Christian, an atheist, a Buddhist, or an adherent of any other worldview. It would still be inadvisable under the vast majority of circumstances.

If atheistic worldviews properly reflect reality with regards to this matter, then the only thing I can think of that would make it "foolish" - regardless of whether you were religious or not - is if it would have repercussions with those around you. To use a drastic example, it would be inadvisable to scream such things in a cop's ear at the top of your lungs. What you believed would make little difference, as the concept of "sin" would be mere fantasy.
Important Note: I no longer - in any way, shape, or form - consider myself a moral nihilist (even in my old, convoluted definition of the term). I very much do believe there is such a thing as objective good and evil. In addition, I apologize for any of the posts I've made that are rude, aggressive, or otherwise unbecoming.

I've always striven to walk a path befitting a follower of Christ, and now recognize some of my old comments here as misguided if not outright wrong. If you happen upon them, pray do not let them darken your view of the God I serve. He is kind, even if I, at times, have not been.

It sounds right, "jesus christ", "holy fuck/hell/shit", "goddamn". It's not really the meaning behind those words, i just used it for so many years that it's in my "swearing/expressing yourself vocabulary".

Why do you say, "Bless you." when the other person sneezes? It's a social and environment learning thing. I don't have any problem with it.

No, because you take the same comfort from it that a religious person does. You've got every reason to say it.

I've become so accustomed to doing it that I'm more shocked when and if it actually offends someone.

No. This is just figurative language now, meant to express and lost its sacred aura

If you want to go specific, most of these words swearing are Old-English; Germanic, therefore pagan? lol

No.
Even if you are religious I don't think using the word is bad unless you mentally put context on the name in a negative way.
Otherwise it's just a word.

I'm pretty sure that for atheists these aren't "sacred" words, so why not use them? I see nothing foolish about it :v

No, I find religious people who are foolish themselves when they can't follow their own scripture correctly. People use those words out of context all the time whenever they're mad or pissed.

as a practicing pagan I'm offended you just assumed the deity's gender
on a more serious note, I don't think it matters since they can always just say it was a placement word for something else they meant

It'd be foolish for religious people to make a big deal out of the use of the words.

I do it subconsciously, I don't really care, I mean these words aren't of value to me so why should I feel the need to go out of my way to not say them?

religious texts aren't an IKEA manual, you don't really have to follow them dogmatically

Yeah, but you're saying something that can't actually express the same level of religious fury that a true believer could mean to express <.<

Well yeah, but what if it was bad enough that that they really wanted to bring some serious religion-powered anger?

I'm atheist and I still say and type "Jesus Christ" and "god damn it". Like post number 4 said, it's effective language.

While I don't use it, I don't see anything wrong about that. I mean, it's just like a random word that happened to evolve into something you say without thinking. If one says "shit" or "fuck" they probably don't think about metabolic waste or procreation either.

Basically this. Other then my family, it's extremely commonplace nowadays to use these terms as swear words.

As a religious person, I am always touched by people who avoid taking the Lord's name in vain. I always try to be respectful of other people's worldviews in my behavior/speech, modifying them as necessary, to make their lives easier, so it always makes me a bit happier when I find someone who does likewise.

I'm not sure how much other people care about my efforts, however.

Considering you're not using his actual name, I don't see why it would be a problem.

Though, I also don't see a problem with using his actual name, so yeah...
