So it's a well-known fact that Japan is a fairly lenient country in terms of what violent/risque content they'll put on public television, but some things still manage to surprise me.

Even though it was only on the OST my jaw dropped the first time I heard the track on Gurren Lagann's OST which spells out 'he loves my asshole', considering it was aired at a children's timeslot.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was violent enough to get a TV-MA on Adult Swim here...really surprised that got played at 5pm with no complaints.

I mean they did get away with it, but I still think this is a good example: Monster.

I mean they would've gotten away with it, if it wasn't for those meddling kids!

I mean, it's Maximum the Hormone, it's a pretty well-known band + I don't think Japan really has censorship concerning songs. At least as far as I know. And all the online lyrics say this:
HEY HEY! Ningen sanka HEY HEY! Ningen fuan kan
HEY HEY! Ningen sanka onorera eien ningen fuan kan

I don't see what's wrong with this....

I mean Gintama IS a parody, which is legally allowed (although not all Gintama jokes can be defended in such a way). Sunrise did get sued a couple of times though, I don't know if they lost any cases.

The fact that Jojo, a manga created in 19 fucking 87 did not get an anime until 2012. That one Stardust Crusaders OVA doesn't count. Don't see how anybody let one of Shonen Jump's biggest manga to be animated-less for how many years. A tragedy really. Would have loved to see Jojo animated in that delicious 80s and 90s style.

The OVA is an example of what it would've looked like, though. I don't think animation was ready for JoJo before David Pro. I mean, the OVA looks severely wonky, imagine an entire TV series. *shudders*

Gundam IBO airing at 5 PM with only one complaint from the BPO for the first season and none for the second season, that would never happen here. Victory Gundam anime being marketed to kids is another one, neither installment is for kids, they're some of the most bloodiest Gundam installments of all.

Loli anime with the Olympics approaching, I'd thought they were gone for good but nope, some God is blessing us by either preventing the bad outcome from happening or slowing the process down (most likely the former as doujinshi has been saved twice, once from TPP and second from the Olympics).

With the manga it's pretty surprising what they managed to get away with in general. High levels of violence, rape, drugs and a non-Japanese protagonist in a time where it was a taboo, all in WSJ.

Um, why has no one mentioned Masou Gauken HxH? That show got away with a LOT. It was borderline porn repeatedly, and even though it was literal garbage (ignore my sarcastic rating) it got a second season as soon as the first ended. THAT SHIT IS NOT OKAY WHERE MY Actually I am season 2???? Or what about Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry??? Nooooooooooo instead of anything we really want we get season 2 of Masou Garbage HxH

Lots of things, but seeing ^^^^^ user brings to mind,

1) The fact that they managed to slip in a less-than-overt JSDF recruitment ad into an entire anime, target audience being otaku. I don't really believe that the GATE anime has any substance beyond this centralized purpose.

2) Also the fact that there is much basis for Japan's fear of the United States as the global, military superpower, which translates to it being some sort of consistently antagonistic force when anime tries to handle globalized issues. Then, there's also the fact that many americans unerringly fail to recognize the connection.

Well Jojo was only a shonen for Parts I-IV. Once V-VIII rolled around they became seinen and jumped to young jump and we all know seinen practically free game for anything. Also wasn't Hokuto No Ken also out the same time as Jojo was? I'm not surprised about the ultra violence part

Speak for yourself lad. I thoroughly enjoyed the animation for the OVA. My biggest gripe with it was the voice acting. Sheesh I don't know what was up with that. I really enjoy David Pro don't get me wrong buuuut I really and I mean really hate how they draw for part IV. Especially since its my favorite part. They should have kept the art style they used with Part 3. Josuke and a few other characters were still built like fridges and the previous art would have matched this better imo. I think they should have saved the current art style for part V and up

Actually part 1-6 were all published in WSJ. Part 7 was too for the first few chapters iirc. As for the violence I figured it was still worth a mention to give an overall idea of everything it managed to get in.

Wow really? I coulda sworn Part V and up made the jump. Especially with the change of 13 pages a chapter to 50. Huh...that's cool but yeah I get your point. I'm honestly surprised that SJ used to be that violent in general back then. I think Toriko might be the only one today that has full on gore but the first few chapters of OPM probably have it beat.

OPM is Tonari no Young jump... also fpr violent, recent yakusoku no naverland still showing that WSJ tollerance of violance still high.. they simpy rarely popular... there is some gritty short in wsj usually...

They did that because Araki changed his style in Part 4 (as first the designs looked like the ones of Stardust Crusaders, but as DiU progressed, the style became less like Hokuto no Ken and the character design slimmed down a bit, with the series developing a proper style).

Curiously, in one scene of the series, in a flashback that shows the Stardust Crusaders protagonists again, they are drwan with Part 3's style.

even if u compare the very last panel of Josuke with the promo art they're not the same, the lines are way to thin and there is next to no shading at all which is what makes jojo characters

hell the games are way more accurate then the anime

all the incest and pedophilie references, I think...

I mean, almost every anime that have a brother and sister, they put a little hint of incest or at least some inappropriate feelings of one part...

and, is so common to put some loli in ecchi scenes, with a lame excuse, like "she looks like a 10 years girl, but actually is supernatural being of hundreds years" ...
some writters are even more lazy and just say "she is actually 20 years old... just accept"

If we are surprised at some things anime can get away with, just think of regular non-anime watching people... or those that only watch like 3-4 mainstream shounen anime. They must think this medium is fucked. I'm so bloody desensitised to fanservice by this point, I don't even notice low key fanservice anymore.

Also, how the fuck is Aki Sora OVAs labelled an ecchi?? How? I mean I would have been spared from that torture if it was tagged a hentai

Ok, maybe I'm just way to desensitised... but I've seen quite a few mentions of Yosuga no Sora. I'd say that would be my limit, practically full on sex but you can't actually see any of it. It was an interesting watch, albeit disturbing.

Also isn't there some scientific explanation about how being separated by birth means they don't pick up each others hormones and recognise each other as siblings or something?

I'm actually kinda surprised at what they can't show on TV now. Back in the day there was more perversion and nudity allowed than there is now. For example, Miss Machiko was made in the early 80's and is about a teacher who keeps getting sexually harassed/assaulted by her young students and coworkers. They flip her skirt, peek on her in the shower, grab her boobs, etc.

But in terms of what's allowed on TV now, I'm not sure how Lance N' Masques ever got shown. That is the most cringe worthy show I have ever seen. A muscular shotacon, a harem made up of girls who couldn't be no older than 10 (with one who is like 5), and the many awkward bath/hot springs scenes are just some of the things that come to mind.
