Boobs are a symbol of feminity, Females with +D cups are particular attractive... because boobs are an attractive feature... and, well, as we all know, the Japanese females don't usually have them. So when something is missing from RL too much, t becomes the norm in fiction XD On a more serious note, I think it had to do with the design > personality. Contrary to the West, in Japan and Asia the standard of beauty is cuteness, unlike West where the sexiness and feminity is the standard. We see this transmuted in anime as moe and what we call lolis. So if they want to create a sexy character, what are they going to do? Well is simply, they will create character with proportions and boobs, which make it more easy to distinguish a sexy/mature girl from a loli. Usually if we see a girl with flat chest in anime trying to behave like a sexy woman, the viewers will simply think of her as a cute girl who is trying her best. Give her a pair of voluptuous boobs and her character will feel dramatically changed. I mean, try to imagine the White Cat from the Monogatari series. She is hot, both body and personality wise... but if she had flat chest would she be the same? Now look at Gate no Jikan, Rory Mercury has pretty much everything to be seen as sexy, except of boobs, which transform her in the eyes of the viewers in a loli type of character. In the rest of the cases that don't enter in this category they are just fan service because boobs are awesome and we like to see them. So using anatomy properly helps in creating certain types of characters. I don't agree with you trough regarding them being the norm. It depends on what anime you watch and how many you see. But there is usually some sort of pattern when it comes to badass MC having sexy female partner. |

| Well in my opinion, the majority of anime watchers lean towards big boobs. And since every anime's purpose is to sell, most producers started going with the flow. Though you still have a decent amount of anime/mangas where the female lead/MC's lover is flat chested girl. |
