I don't know who is more unlikeable, the idiotic knight who doesn't know how honor works or the idiotic stalker who doesn't know how debt works. Also lol @ Subaru's "I don't do this for myself" right befor his "you could never repay me" rant. |

Subaru's power is more of a curse than a blessing. Im sure Emilia would understand if she knew what he was going through but since he cant talk about his power, he's being screwed over. He probably did something really bad without even knowing it. Hopefully he is picking up clues because when he eventually dies and goes back in time, he is gonna have to think of something |

AnimeJunky said: The you Subaru for not being a total fuckin pussy like most male leads would be. I loved how he defended Emilia & talked back to the royal snobs. And what he said at the end about Emilia owing him. He has every damn right to be like he is. He was summoned to a new world, found people he really cares about & died many times to save them. Then Emilia can't give him a shred of trust & basically tells him to go to hell. My hate goes to Emilia for being so damn stupid. Agree. At the same time Emilia does have a point since he broke their promise. With that said, it was obvious that Subaru wasn't going to stand by and let his prize be tarnished by others. On top of that he called himself a Knight because he wanted to make it seem like Emilia wasn't the only one without one. Subaru is selfish indeed but what he did here was for the benefit of Emilia as well as himself. |

And they ultimately call it a bad episode just cause it's not ''their'' Subaru for once. This is one of the times where the Reddit discussion about the episode is much better as they have an open mind about this, i saw many opinions that fit mine. |

I will take you on. Although I don't have a lot of time today, I will argue with you until you shut up. Fai said: He was never dumb. he was never obsessive and selfish stalker. Then why did he help Emilia in the first place? He wanted to repay her. He still thought that his debts were TOO BIG. That lead him to the conclusion that he has to help Emilia on her way to the throne. Now the fear he had is that she is assassinated and he couldn't do anything about it and the save point moves, thus killing her for all eternity. That's the explanation for his actions in the last two episodes. Now as for the prior episodes, he wanted to save her every time in the first arc because she died and helped him. But why would he do that at the risk of his life. Because he's obsessed with her. If he had had such a weak motivation, he would have given up a long time ago. After that he always tried to date her in the second arc. Why would he do that? Because he's obsessed with her. He didn't see it as a simple date. He saw it as a romantic one. There were indications. He was socially awkward guy who did not have that many relationships before and is trying to fit into the world. Judging by the words he said in episode 1, he had nobody to rely on. Maybe his parents sent him money (or not), maybe he had to go to school, but he seemed starved for social interactions and love. Thus his obsessed love was created. But one of the major aspects that made people like him was that he was smart. He used his brain. he acted like a real person would He didn't adjust himself to the society where he landed in. His language was insolent and childish. It's a wonder he wasn't punished before. He could have executed some plans in a smarter way. He could have been "funny" and still be respectful. But he wasn't. instead of falling into pit of Protagonist Drama. What do you mean by that? That he acts retarded and makes sudden turns? Because his past actions indicated this turn of events. And he was never that selfish - He literally jumped off the cliff forsaking his own survival just because he wanted to help someone else. And Lelouch is suddenly not selfish for creating a country for his sister. Logical fallacies (from me) aside, just because he made some selfless actions doesn't make him completely selfless. He acted selfish and selfless at time. We saw him overcome the whole "im the hero in the game" aspect in arc 2 and genuinely put his life on the line for others. He's putting his life on the line in this arc as well. He wants Emilia to be elected as priestess. He wants her to be alive (he stated before that he fears her being assassinated; he puts no faith in Roswaal). So where is the contradiction? What he is doing now ignores all that. No, he acted the same way in the second arc, just that there it was a life-or-death situation. The show went from protagonist learning how real situation is and putting his life on the line for others TO the protagonist being an obsessive self-entitled dumb yandere within a single episode, without any justification in the change of behavior. See above. The problem is not him being flawed or fucking up. Never said it otherwise. The problem is that it contradicts what we know about him and feels forced/unnatural. Subaru suddenly becomes complete idiot just so this situation can play out and his turn into obsessive yandere lacks justification. See above. I love my characters flawed and morally ambiguous. But this is third madoka movie level of character assassination. Added to plan-to-watch list. :D But the show still treats her as a goal. Subaru behaved and he got a date. Now Subaru fucked up and his waifu rejected him. So he will have to fix shit up so his waifu gives him a second chance. Same thing. Subaru treats her as a goal. It's his ambition. He wants to repay her and attain her love because she cared for him. He was starving of love. Of course he will try to win her back. I don't know what kind of criticism that is. She can live herself, she did all her work in arc 2, she won't just be his price, but an independant character. What do you want more? To forbid love? The show literally made it seem like Emilia is dumping him because she cares too much for him and he messed up and hurt her emotionally. Which means he will have to make up for that. Which still retains her status as trophy for him to win. Just instead of physical victory of Arc 2, this is a mental one. It appeared like that in the first moment. But she came to the understanding that his motive is too weird and sees her as a price instead of a human. If he wins her trust, it won't certainly be easy. If you demand love to be forbidden because of his mistakes, then I won't argue any further. Can't win against this (senseless) level of feminism. I want you to say me, how she could be presented to come closer to him without being a trophy. Just spouting nonsense like being a trophy without presenting a non-trophy scenario is basically denying his love and feminism at its finest. After that I'll continue the argumentation again. |

Well I know Subaru is a human at the end he ofc is going to make mistakes but holy sh*t his foolishness level in this episode was over 9000!He made me cringe so hard. Even though I'm on Rem's side I don't hate Emilia sure she should've trusted him more but I mean I can't really blame her for her attitude since Subaru cannot tell her the entire story and as a result she cannot understand everything. BTW Anastasia is still an annoying sh*t I hate her. |

For a guy who has died that many times, snapping like that might've been healthier and more accurately portrays his humane features. Memories with the girl of your dreams that technically don't exist and deaths that no one remembers would be enough to break anyone. i see many people got pretty mad cause subaru did a really stupidest thing ever in this series. i got mad too indeed. i couldn't even stand hearing him insulting the knights, but i like it cause it looks more realistic and emotional potrays what would most humans would did in real life if they were put in that kind of situation in real life. so in summarry; So this is how the problem started, all of the assholes in that room was insulting Emilia, and Subaru snapped. He self-proclaimed himself as the best knight. best knight. obvious that would snapped the other knights and that puprle hair guy made an arguement with subaru statement. is subaru has much resolve that makes him strong, or something like that. The arguement went until subaru made his stupidity went into another whole level. he insluted the knights for no actual reasons because he thinks that purple hair guy tried to distance he from emilia and from insulting him too. so he got mad more than before and start insulting the knights for no reason. if this kinda of situation happened in real life, this what would happened obviously considering what happened to subaru and his personallity. Emilia put him out of the room but before that, one of the oldman said subaru just did a good thing as emilia's servant but she deny that and put him outside. and that's the humilliation of Natsuki Subaru began. The purple hair guy met subaru and challenged him. AND! subaru accepted the challenge. and yeah....you can see what will happen afterwards. He got beat up and yeah.... He woke up and see emilia, sitting besides him and asking him the reason why he accepted the challenge before. "Insult" obvious, most people, if they got insult they would snapped like what subaru just did in this episode. he couldn't accepted that and tried to proof to that purple hair guy that all of his statements were invalid. and for other reason: cause that purple hair guy looked like tried to distance him fro Emilia. And as they were keep talking, it came to the reason why subaru did all of that, not only about the challenge. "Just For Emilia" but if you think about it again, what emilia said after that, she is true. all of that only for his own selfishness, for subaru's satisfication. if you think about it again, emilia never asked any of that yet subaru did all of that. MOVEOVER emilia asked him to stayed with Rem but instead he did all of that. obvious this will lead to emilia losing her trust towards subaru. BUT! that's not the end, the conversation still continued. Emilia aksed why subaru tried to help her. Subaru said because emilia helped her. he said emilia doesn't understand just how much everything that emilia did have saved him. obvious, emilia said that she can't understand it. she couldn't understand it if subaru didn't say anything. AND! this continue to the part where when subaru wants to explain everything about his ability (Return By Death) his life always got threated by something which makes him can't say anything. and for another time, emilia said she can't understand it if subaru didn't say anything. from that point subaru snapped. he got mad at emilia for everything he did to saved her from life-death situation. he even risked his life to saved her. die and die with pain many times. he snapped like a crazy person. and that made emilia lose her trust towards subaru more than before. she thought subaru looks at her like subaru looks to others but subaru can't looked at emilia like he looks at others. if you connected it to the reason why Emilia/ the emilia's motive or goal when she become the ruler, final blow. i think this is one of the best episode where white fox executed this episode perfectly imo moreover it even looked more realistic than what i had expected. i really got mind fuck watching this episode. i seriously can't stand either seeing or hearing subaru acted very stupid in this episode. and his action has a reason. not only an empty stupid action without any actual reason. there are many reasons why he acted like that and all of that reasons revealed at the second half until the ending. but that thing, which prevent subaru from explaining everything really pissed me off so much. just if subaru could explain it, it would ended in a different way, maybe it would has a happy ending. so i think that is the main problem. anyway, i really like how the author potrays the human features, human negative sides in this episode. really like that alot too. i don't really know what to say cause this episode is basically was telling us subaru's stupid action. other than that is Felt xD really like her goal if she became the ruler. i support her. but most of the plot was focusing more on subaru's action so, i got mad.....but i really like how they executed it. really well done imo. just one thing that i want subaru do now; kill himself and restart again from the beginning. if i were him, i would obviously, 100% would did that. |

Subaru messed up big time but I feel so bad for the guy. He literally cannot say or give any kind of explanation to Emilia and you can tell throughout the series, especially the end of this episode how hard everything mentally hits him again and again. Heck those kind of outbursts are natural when people don't have any restriction on what they're allowed to say to others. Can understand why he had that outburst when he was trying to defend Emilia as well. |

They act and they portray emotions prevalent at the time of rendition. To expect a full scale or even partial inclusion of his mental progression would require inconsequential scenes being included slowing the pace as well as diluting the emotions of the non-present characters that don't appear in said scenes. edit: sorry, new to forums so not great on quoting.. which is all i did in my edit |

The show does not spare the effort to tell or show the viewer on why someone who acted the way he did in previous arc suddenly acts this way. The show only presents the viewer with Subaru doing ooc stupid things. Which are ooc because they lack justification and progression from previous arcs. But he IS being a bad person. Telling someone they OWE YOU for being nice is as bad as it can be. Especially since his behavior lacks any sort of characterization progress making it feel like it clashes with rest of the show. Is he suffering from ptsd? Is he just being stupid for no reason? We can't tell because Show does not bothers to show us anything beyond him acting stupid for no reason. What subaru did these episodes is very hard to come back from and does not make any sense for the viewers in terms of how he was characterized before. |

It would've largely made sense if he was just a little more cautious. Like I stated in the last ep thread, the author should've just wrote him into the courtroom. Even if it was going to go down the drain we could've thought of it as a very impulsive action with dire consequences. Instead we get Subaru acting like a brat for the majority of episode 12. _Hans_ said: QWERTYFish25 said: Nayrael said: In worst case, the show may go Valvrave on him. Instead of viciously biting her, he proceeds to tear off her clothes and blatantly penetrates and rapes her. In the midst of the awkward moment the scene switcesh between the crime and Shouko winning some dumb student president election, which includes Saki "embracing" her attacker. The real kicker is the fact the most it is mentioned after is Saki thinking to herself "I won't let him apologize". That's it. The show proceeds like it never happened. Twas a cheap trick to garner attention. I thought it would somehow build upon the two with coming to terms with the downsides of the power but no. Nothing. |

Is he suffering from ptsd? Is he just being stupid for no reason? We can't tell because Show does not bothers to show us anything beyond him acting stupid for no reason. the ending was telling us the reason why subaru did all of that. the scene where subaru woke up and emilia was sitting besides him. that was all of the reasons. this is what happened at the end; He woke up and see emilia, sitting besides him and asking him the reason why he accepted the challenge before. AND! this continued to the part where when subaru wants to explain everything about his ability (Return By Death) his life always got threated by something which makes him can't say anything. and for another time, emilia said she can't understand it if subaru didn't say anything. from that point subaru snapped. he got mad at emilia for everything he did to saved her from life-death situation. he even risked his life to saved her. die and die with pain many times. he snapped like a crazy person. and that made emilia lose her trust towards subaru more than before. she thought subaru looks at her like subaru looks to others but subaru can't looks at emilia like he looks at others. if you connected it to the reason why Emilia/ the emilia's motive or goal when she become the ruler, final blow. sorry for bad english |

Part of development means holding your stupidity in. Even with that rant and being shocked by the boundaries of his power he still went on like that. At least the last time he shut the fuck up. I mean I can get as to why he'd get emotional like that and that was arguably the best part of the episode, but we've already been through this when he broke down right before Rem killed him outside the castle. Yea, people have relapses but it was largely awkward. |

He literally used "I am the hero everyone!" comedy schtick as a mental mask to cope for last half of Arc2 before the break down. Arc 2 was literally all about Subaru learning how real shit is and then having to put his life on the line for others and not just himself despite being scared. Here's the thing I don't get, His 'ability' is kinda like rewind time, just that he requires LOTs of BALLs to use correctly. Like how in Groundhog day, The MC Became a GOD because he knew the possibility of every action. Just kill himself and fight the guy till he wins. He'll get smarter about dodging every move. It's like playing Darksouls. You Die but you learn how the enemy works so eventually you become a god. |

I somehow get the feeling a good chunk of people here can't comprehend non linear character development. By getting himself into a situation that is such large scaled compared to what he is used to, he got emotionally backed into a corner, became desperate and eventually made several steps back in his development. In other words this means falling back into old patterns that are amplified by the circumstances -> "Subaru what's going on with you?". He is sent to the lowest low, the absolute bottom by his own actions and now has the chance to reconstruct his character bit by bit. Or in short. By getting confronted with his own faults he broke but can now put the pieces together in a way that create a better man. |

The show only presents the viewer with Subaru doing ooc stupid things. Which are ooc because they lack justification and progression from previous arcs. But he IS being a bad person. From my 3rd person viewer POV (my interpretation if you will), he saw her getting farther and farther from him and tried to reach her by using the fact that without him, she would have died and many problems in the mansion and village would have happened. So, it is manipulation he used to try and stop her from abandoning him. Why? Because he lost control of the situation. He wouldn't deal with it rationally and calmly thinking things through like he used to. He was very desperate. It is the most humane thing about him since the beginning. He kept saying that he didn't have an ambition and didn't really want something from her/them. But when he saw he was losing her, he lost it. Edit: Fappa explained it better above. Ninja'd me. |

Deep down Subaru is a despicable person. He's not the type that helps people because he wants to help them. He's the type that helps others for himself. He does it to feel important and when reality informs him that he really isn't important he throws an embarrassing tantrum about it. Emilia thought he was her friend. In reality he only cares about her to the extent to prop himself up on her. His deeds to "help" her are nothing more than some sick egotistical masturbation for him. It's one thing to help others because it makes you feel good. It's an entirely different thing to help others because it makes you feel good then demand they acknowledge they need you and have them shower you with praise and status for your deeds. In other words your actual helping them doesn't make you feel good at all. your sense of entitlement and importance to them because you helped them coupled with the debt you feel they owe to you is what makes you feel good. |

To be fair I think Subaru could use some time away from Emilia. All he's done is follow her around and try to help her. He hasn't even bothered to try figuring out why he was sent to this world or how to remove the curse. It's great how much he cares for her, but he needs to start making some headway on solving his own problems. How many times will he have to experience the horribleness of the curse before he gets on trying to permanetly save himself? |

Other than that Emilia is just there as a female MC doing nothing half the time. Subaru should just use his ability Groundhog day style and be a genius at everything. That last scene is a perfect example of why I love this so much - the characters actually feel about as realistic as it gets in an anime like this. The last two episodes I just felt embarrassed for Emilia because of his actions, and I was wondering how it was gonna play out. Turns out, not too well on Subaru's part aha. But the best scene is definitely this one: 10/10 awesome. My hype level builds more and more as this series goes on. |

How about a realistic character that's not actual scum? You're simply going from one extreme in your examples to the next. Tomoya in Clannad is a realistic character. Most people don't have a problem with him even if the circumstances around him are about as realistic as Kirito in Sword Art Online (all the women love him for seemingly no reason). |

He likes Emilia from another timeline, for doing something rather trivial (I say this because he can settle that situation if he dies and gathers knowledge). Emilia does nothing for most of the show besides existing. He just needs to find another job besides bootlicking and actually learn how to kick some ass even if he has to die a couple of times. |
