Nice. Zwei's hidden power came out again. That bitch captain got stabbed in the hand. Lol
That scythe doctor rubbed Ein's body! I didn't quite get what he said back there to Ein.
Kill Zwei and turn him into a masterpiece? How will Zwei turn into a masterpiece if he's already dead? O.o
Zwei finally become a full time assasin. He's like a ghoul form of Tsukune from Rosario+Vampire. :D
and wtf! I think Claudia knows Zwei before he become an assassin.
Cheesyhoboe said: Scythe Master considers Ein as a prized possession and an extension of his gun collection; just as he would polish his most prized guns to preserve their beauty, he does the same to Ein by rubbing lotion on her and making sure her beauty is preserved. So no, he's definitely not right in the head.
Still what was lotion???? Why rub her??? Dr think she is like gun so he polish her? Not right in head 100%. That bothered me and wonder who else is???
This bothered me as well, as good as this show is starting out, somethings can just be left out... i mean besides making some people want to tear their eyes out i didn't really see how it added to the story at all... i'm fairly sure people knew Scythe Master was a freak; was this just to confirm it? well in any case solid episode aside from that scene, hopefully there aren't to many of those kinds of scenes going foward.
WTF did Ein do to Zwei? His eyes in kill-mode are awesome!!
Me thinks Scythe Master is using Ein as more than just an assassin! Watching him rub oil on her body was like watching a child being molested by a creepy old man.
I hate it more that Zwei obediently follows Inferno then that he doesn't like to kill. I want him to say fuck Inferno and kill Ein, Sythe Master all those people then to obediently kill for them or die trying don't listen to people who ruined ur life
really nice episode, love the music in this one just send's chills down your spine, or at least for me. Yeah the scene with the Scythe Master was really unexpected but I got what the meaning was just was really weird :/ but its quite clear that he is just tapped in the head..... I am strangely attracted to Zwei.
I got shivers this episode. This anime portrays the emotion so perfectly, it's as if you are the one being trained to kill. I can support that argument even further with the examples of the last 2 episodes' training. I feel as if they're teaching us for when we'll need it.
Also, if this is just the intro, I wonder what the remaining 20+ episodes will contain. Still waiting on the younger blonde girl as well, maybe she'll relieve the tense mood a bit ^^ (not that I don't love it though).

He accepted the fact that he had to leave behind his 'old life' (knowing the fact that his memories were erased), and accept that he is now an assasin.
I don't think he accepted the fact that he had to leave his old life. In fact, I think it was exactly the opposite. He accepted death, which I think is made explicit by his reply to Ein and his behavior. As well, I think that any rational choice to become an assassin (such as the one you are implying) would necessarily fail because the choice is itself not rational. (Keep in mind that, as Ein describes it, "assassin" here entails a complete loss of what it means to be human. So, it is a much stronger condition than the usual sense of the word, which, on the other hand, could absolutely result from rational choice.) Hence, it is only by the aid of an extreme catalyst, namely "death" (which can be quite conventionally described as a process and concept transcending the limitations of the rational mind), that he is even able to make this change.
As far as blow by blow: Ein tells him to throw away everything he knows and feels to become "Zwei." However, he replies (at least in my translation) to the effect that he's nothing like or fundamentally unable to become like "Zwei" and assents to have her kill him. He lowers his head, not looking at her, and fully resigns him to death. He completely believes that she will kill him. (The camera cuts and then zooms incredibly far out to the barren land to visually analogize this psychological distance, i.e. just as we are removed from his life, so to does he remove himself from his own life.) We hear a gun shot and then we see that she hasn't shot him. But, this doesn't even matter. As soon as the gun went off, he was "dead," impervious to thought or sense by his mind's own mechanisms for protection. Remember that we're working under the assumption that he truly believes he is going to die. (The concept of ego death would be an adequate way to describe his reaction.) Thus, when Ein "awakens" him as Zwei, she's literally giving him a new identity to fill this void (or, to an extent, tabula rasa) that he has inadvertently created.
Obviously, this explanation is quite suspect on the grounds of realism, but I would argue that, as we're dealing with a work of fiction portraying an extremely ritualized and symbolic interaction, this interaction can't be "realistically" explained in terms other than the ritual and symbolic.
As a fun aside, in this context, it's far from insignificant that the director (et al.) chose to depict the training camp in such a remote and barren swath of land. It really emphasizes the psychological destruction Ein undergoes in his transformation from man to "lifeless" killing machine, especially gaining significance when the scene does cut in the manner described above. (As a contrast, could you picture all of this happening in an overwhelmingly lush, natural environment (i.e. an intensely green, living, steaming jungle)? It seems almost ridiculous to imagine!)
... I should get a blog or something, lawl.
Wow, that's a really good analysis of the Zwei's "death" scene. It made the show even better. I like the attention you paid to not only the psychological significance, but also the camera work and the director's choice of the setting. If anyone still isn't interested in this anime yet, I think this might help them appreciate the anime more. This episode was definitely a turning point in Zwei's characterization, he's fully become an assassin. I like how there were few flashbacks regarding what Ein taught Zwei during his training too, it shows that he really did learn a lot from Ein (since it kind of seemed like he finished his training all of the sudden, at least to me. But then again, anime vs real life time is obviously very different. I wonder how long he trained for?)
lotion rubbing was just a little disturbing, could of done without that but maybe in the next few episodes we will understand why he did that, or he is just completely bonkers, also the knife in the arm looked a little funny, now the real zwei is born with dead eyes
Ehh, I already hate that Scythe, I'm sure he abuse her sexually that fucker...
Zwei as now completed is training, but even after this training, I'm still not sure. He doesn't have the mind of a killer, he just have a strong instinct. I don't think that in long term, he can stay loyal.
I wonder who was that guy the blond girl dreamed of, maybe another executor?
I'm looking forward for this serie, but again, I hate that ED song -.-
«Time is passing so quickly. Right now, I feel like complaining to Einstein. Whether time is slow or fast depends on perception. Relativity theory is so romantic. And so sad.» - Kurisu Makise a.k.a. The Zombie
wtf was he rubbing her with dam that was creepy kind of made me mad
them eyes that they have are crazy kool looking
well we all knew he wasn't going to die I was half expexting them to run away
overall good episode nice pacing
Somehow I still don't find myself really enjoying this anime. Or at least it makes me feel little uneasy and almost every character annoy me - including Ein which makes watching this series little hard. I hope that I'll start to enjoy this more soon cause this is something that I should like.
"Oh, I wasn't trying to be funny.. I would've put a 'Haha' at the end of it."
Ah yes, the inevitable sexual scene between Scythe and Eins has arrived as expected. On the good news, that gun comparison does sound like a pretty good explanation of why he was rubbing lotion on her so we could assume it just ended at that.
I still can't stand how easy it's been for Zwei to get manipulated. Yea you killed a person but he clearly gave you no choice since the asshole tried to trick you, beat you to teach you how it's done and was about to shoot you in the head. Rather than moping around, why not try to think of a way to get out of this situation before they start sending you on assassinations like they do with Eins?
I also find his black eyes "mode" a bit odd since it seems more like a power than just extreme instincts like Eins has. Just not sure yet if this anime is going to be "realistic" like Black Lagoon or have characters with abilities like Darker than Black. Probably just a main character thing lol.
when someone hits ur head in a wall thrice i doubt that u can think straiht and aim very well
especially wih a fragile body like his lmao
if logic continues like this, oh man its gonna be a bad ride
Ehh, I don't like the sudden change of Zwei in the end. If he turns into a mindless killer I will drop the show. I was hoping for Zwei to still contain his emotions and see how it affects him while working for Inferno/plotting his escape. It would be turn into a good psychological story.
Really good episode and much more engaging than the first two imo. While it's reminded me of Noir (which I just finished recently), I have to say that I think I like this more in terms of writing, animation and execution (even tho they have similar directing due to the director being the same), which is interesting since I liked the ideas in Noir more to extent. 4/5
Scythe Master is one twisted deviant. No idea how Zwei is scared of killing people when that bastard is in the same scene; you'd have an itchy trigger finger if anything.
The Navy Seal guy harps on "cowards afraid to pull the trigger", then is...too afraid to pull the trigger...so he inflicts some half-assed torture and then just gloats and presses the gun against Zwei's head for like five seconds until Zwei kills him. Maybe he was talking about himself.
