| Yeah I knew Franz was going to die when he gave the birthday card to Eugenie last episode. And I too thought the huge armors were kinda out of place, a normal duel would have been more dramatic in my opinion. I also didnt like the fact that Franz had to die only because Albert made a stupid thing. But still a pretty good episode nonetheless, looking forward to the next. |

Fight. Ever. It's really a shame the direction Gonzo's decided to go in with the revenge plots in the last 1/4th of the show or so. Dumas planned everything out so it ended so perfectly and poetically, and Gonzo is just changing major plot points at random, I guess for the sake of keeping Albert at the center of every single episode? For anyone who's interested, I just finished reading the Count of Monte Cristo for the first time last month, and I'm keeping a running tally if similarities and differences between the book an anime over at my blog... |
| Entirely unexpected and sick. omg (mostly because, mechas aside, this is very different from what happens in the book). Only thing was if they had to have mechas, having blood spraying from the mechanical limbs is not cool. And Albert screaming Franz at the very end made an uber sad moment fall a little flat. But still, one of the wrongest things I remember seeing in anime, not for gore or anything, but just...I dunno. Wasn't lame, but some things were...over done. But yeah, I think my heart just broke because of this anime. Again. Franz, being just about my favorite character and getting killed off..sigh. |

| aside from me thinking the mechs were out of place as well and Franz's death, Question! Why did no one bother to confirm the identity of both of the participants before the battle started? My friend argues the Count was too insane at the time to bother, but if you're going to have witnesses to the fight, why did none of them bring it up? And I personally don't think the Count was out of it enough to not make sure he wasn't exacting revenge on the right person. Revenge is obviously important to him, you'd think he'd want to ensure it was on the right person. Now Albert is still running around and the revenge has not been completed for the Count. And he really didn't have anything against Franz, so I can't argue "well, he wanted them both dead" or anything. |

| It seems I have a curse on me or something, because in everything I read/watch my favourite charachter dies! Seriously! This isn't funny, I'm heartbroken here. And I too hated the mecha robots; what was the blood spraying from the robot limbs?!?!?! And no. I'm not overreacting here. I haven't been crying that hard since... Death Note spoiler: |

| ... :( I knew it was coming, like a number of others did, but it's still sad that Franz of all characters had to die. The mecha... the animation... the CGI... It was just very out of place. Also, I think that whole battle scene was really poorly done. I had no freaking clue what was going on the entire time. I know there was a way to distinguish between the mechas, but the whole fight just seemed too chaotic and confusing. And seriously? The Count didn't even bother to check that it was Albert before exacting his revenge? That seems very odd... Parts of this episode definitely seemed off... But anyway. Onwards and hopefully upwards again ("upwards" since, all in all, I didn't think this was a very good episode - I was just sad that Franz died) with the rest of the episodes... |
| I hate robot stuff in anime and I both knew this was coming and enjoyed it. They hint it in the ending from the very beginning. Also I feel like comparing this to the novel is a waste of time and is probably killing enjoyment for anyone who has read it. I'm still loving this show, no idea what you guys are griping about. |
| I wasn't too big on the mecha battle myself, but to me it was bearable. I sometimes wondered, "Why are they screaming? The bot's getting it's limbs cut off, not them." But again, bearable for me. I knew Franz was gonna die just... Not like that. v.v I cried, and I thought that Albert's reaction was actually perfect. I tried comparing it to what I would do if my sister died because of something I did, since we're about as close as those two, and I figured that that might not seem like "overreacting" to the one suffering. Give 'im a break, guys. XD And I totally agree. Why did the Count not check it was Albert first!? I mean, seriously. Shouldn't that have been the first thing he did!? Ugh! So annoying. Anyway, R.I.P. Franz, you will be missed. TT^TT |

The movements weren't clunky at all - like they were in Gonzo's other work, Bokurano - and the mechas didn't look out of place when placed next to the CG. The team responsible for the sequence were so attentive to the smaller details that they made sure Franz trembled and moved fearfully, in comparison to the composure shown by Edmond--a touch I appreciated very much. Since Gankutsuou came out way back in 2004, back then I'd say it was movie level, rather than TV series level. Gonzo didn't shove mecha down viewers throats, as they have in other shows. Episode 18 and the end are the only times the mechas battled it out... easy enough to ignore, no? And, if I was going to be annoyed over a single change, I'd choose to be more pissy over the period being changed from the 1800's to 5043, or something silly like that. As for why Edmond didn't care enough to confirm who was riding the mecha, Franz arrived early and - unless it's a requirement to see each other face-to-face prior to dueling - there wasn't any reason for Edmond to waste time. He knew Albert was too angry to have someone else fight in his stead. And the novel revealed that Edmond was a master with a sword; so much so that he wouldn't have been afraid had Albert hired someone to fight in his place. ...In any event: Franz's death is one of the more tragic anime deaths I've seen. Where as Albert was given the brain of a dog as Gonzo re-worked the story around him, Franz was altered to be extremely intelligent. Him putting the pieces together regarding the count, while Albert could only retort with "...YOU'RE WRONG!" made up for Albert's stupidity, to a certain extent. And Franz's unrequired love for Albert being expressed with the ultimate sacrifice did move me, in spite of me not being overly fond of manxman love. In contrast to others in this thread, episode 18 is one of my favourite anime episodes. Back when I first watched Gankutsuou, I ended my 1-18 marathon at 18, sure that no other episode would better it, and I was right. |

| Franz pulled the ultimate bro move. It's always heartwrenching to watch Evangelion-styled mechs get pummeled around. This was definitely one hell of a sad episode... Let's hope Albert actually changes after this... |

| Truly a powerful episode, it was a bit painful to watch the Count dismember Franz's mech and see blood shooting and hearing him scream, does that mean he felt the pain that came along with that? The end of their duel was unbelievably tragic, I won't be able to put this one into words. Lol @ people saying mechs are out of place in a futuristic setting with spaceships, aliens, virtual reality technology, and immortals. |

| Worst episode of the entire series. Some of the worst CGI I've seen in a long long time along with a really stupid and pointless death to a MC. Another part that annoyed me was how it was all of a sudden day time when Albert got there and nobody was around. Where the fuck did they all go and how was Franz still alive bleeding out this whole time? Hopefully the rest of the episodes don't have anything in common with this one because man was it a dud in an otherwise really good anime. EDIT: It also doesn't help that Crunchy Roll practically spoils the entire episode with it's thumbnail of Franz with blood coming out of his mouth laying on the ground. |
