Its not hard to tell that as time goes by, (this mostly appears on main-stream) the anime loses its plot or they just run out of ideas (e.g....Bleach :-( ). Whether it a juicy-storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat, and itching to watch the next episode so much, that you have thought of making a break-in their production offices and steal their material, or if its those epic battles that have been stirred up to perfection, in the most perfect time. of the most perfect moment...(express your views)

Well, ideally a good anime shall have good everything: good story, pacing, characters, character design, animation, BGM, songs, supplemental materials, etc.

My problem with Bleach is how the fillers just take you out from the main story and force you to watch a completely separate arc while the main arc is hanging. That destroys the pacing of the show. Naruto is a bit better as some of the fillers actually fits in-between the main arc's timeline and/or add past/background information.

charm that would entice a fair amount of viewers. you're not talking about something groundbreaking right, just good, so it would be something worth watching but not that remarkable. Creators are bound to take risks every now and then. They should come up with unique ways on how to mesmerize viewers. If the idea's fully welcomed, good for them. Its a gamble because society is composed of mixed criticisms. ^_____^

A) Old topic most likely.

B) Too broad a question. Because we have many genres, and each genre have their own set of criteria for what's good or not.

C) At the end of the day, if the material isn't something of your interest, you likely wouldn't call it "good" even if many other people do.

Passable or better quality character and plot writing. That is a absolute and unavoidable requirement for being good. Everything else is secondary.

characterization - even if the plot is cliched, strong characterization can make the series tolerable or in some cases, (as in spice and wolf) awesome.
if you disagree with what i say, feel free to comment on my profile. in all likelihood, i won't come back to this thread.

A likeable main character is a must-have for any anime, in my opinion.

Outside of comedy, I think plot twists and a little bit of drama is a must-have as well. Particularly in romances; without plot twists or drama they tend to be rather bland.

Sad taste you have there kid you came up to me in the first place making you look more like a kid who got slapped without me even knowing it and start crying about it to me

Good art and animation is always appreciated. Other than that this is a pretty lame question to try and answer because treating every anime the same only leads to stagnation and boredom.

A strong driving point that remains the focus of the show, whether it's to save the world, having characters survive high school, getting laid, or experimenting with madness. Getting sidetracked by subplots is fine at times, but don't go overboard and turn into a different show. Unless that was the point, then I don't know.

It should probably also have animation and a Japanese origin.

According to MAL, it can also be Korean.

But my point is that I can't think of a single rule to follow in this thread. Good animation? Some shows don't need it and, as it is usually a matter of budget, others can cover this aspect in various forms (for comedic purpose, using experimental shots and animations). Good character development? What about the short films, which are too short for making them grow, and instead they are treated as metaphors instead of dynamic characters? Or surrealistic works, or absurd and unfocused comedy... Good writing? Some shows are almost entirely based on their visual charm.

An excellent cast of characters. Whether they are characters that you can't help to love (like in Angel Beats) or characters that you love to hate (like Kirei from Fate/Zero). To me, having Engaging characters with an interesting backstory can help cover for a weak plot/storyline almost every single time.

I think Baman put it best. The characters and plot are the bread and butter of what makes a good anime (except episodic anime series, where the plot really isn't as significant).

I agree, and I think a satisfying ending is important too. There have been too many anime I'v been really into to get so let down by the ending which makes me think...well that was crap.

Good writing along with some type of entertaining plot that fits the genre and keeps the story going. Also needs at least two or preferably more like able characters, one of which should obviously be the main character since they get the most screen time.

Firstly, a consistent plot, with characters which can at least pique my interest for the duration of the anime.
After that, good music, art and animation.
Thirdly, minimal usage of repeat sequences.

Other qualities I can think of are mostly genre specific and wouldn't be considered universal requirements.

As a child, I was told that society is a melting pot of talents; knowledge and experience combined to form important alloys that will contribute to mankind. When I got to highschool, however, I thought that it's more like a river in which the water represents our peers while we ourselves are the stones in the river. Constant erosion by mindless majority sheeping has made us lose our unique edge. After I hit the age of 18, I realized that I've been wrong all along. Society is no melting pot. Society is no river. Society is a person, a very skilled rapist, and he has fucked us all.
