Ghibli, girly romcoms, shitty Dragon Ball Z ripoffs, shitty Pokemon ripoffs, boring gore filled horror anime for emos, boring robot shows, borderline porn and porn. I knew that anime wasn't 'just for kids'. I just didn't care. The original Hellsing TV series still bores the shit out of me.

I grew up watching DBZ but English dubbed K-ON is what got me into anime in the end.

Because I grew up watching DBZ, Pokemon, and Yugioh, (dont forget Ghilbli) I never thought of those being anime, simply cartoons. As I grew up, I found other animes were fuckin gay, because the people that associated themselves at my school were weird. And then my friend showed me attack on titan, (yes I was part of that American craze) and I actually enjoyed it, and now here I am today

I thought it was just about people fighting each other using swords and magic and whatever else. Sword Art Online and Code Geass didn't help me break this mentality. Toradora! was the first anime I saw that showed me how diverse anime really is.

Didn't know it existed. Well technically I knew. But I didn't know all the series I was watching were called anime (Pokémon, Digimon, Dragon Ball, Medarot, Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh, Crayon Shin-chan)

I thought anime was for angsty teenagers who want to feel they're better than everyone because Naruto has blood, therefore mature.

I thought anime was pretty cool but I felt like I'd be made fun of at school too much if i actually showed an interest in it. Soon enough though I decided it was worth it to just enjoy what I enjoy and not really worry about it. If people were gonna give me trouble for it they weren't worth having around anyway.

I made fun of people who watched it and gave really bad reasons why it was bad to watch. I don't think what I was saying was very reasonable.
Brace yourself.

Soon as LotGH 2017 comes out. The anime community is going to become so cancerous you will need to take cover and hide.

I use to think that the people who watched it were nerds or losers. Or something of that sort. Now I look at myself and realize they were right. The feels.

A few years prior to my first experience with anime, I was known as a "YouTube Pooper". It's basically someone that does video remixes and posts them on YouTube. I had a friend that would sometimes do "Anime themed Poops", and I always disliked that because I never understood what the appeal was. I usually watched YouTube Poops mainly for comedic and entertainment value. When I watched these Anime Poops, I just didn't like them, and ever since had a negative outlook towards anime, probably thinking it was stupid or for nerds.

Man, how much I've matured since then.

I kind of knew of it but just thought they were called cartoons. I didn't really care for it, nor think it was appalling, or anything like that lol.I didn't really acknowledge it either, until a friend showed me a couple in high school.

That's actually an interesting story.

As for me, I started as most of you did. I saw clips on Toonami of Naruto and DBZ, and I thought it was regular cartoon programming. Then, I got some manga from a friend that was dumping them and I was like "Hey, why not?"

If I recall correctly, the first anime series I watched was Rosario+Vampire. I remember being surprised a bit with the voices (of course). But I didn't find anything wrong with anime. And thus, it has become an almost integral part of my life.

tl;dr high pitched voices and abnormal slapstick humor was expected.

Same, but I watched when I was like 4 ? I was not a hardcore watcher, tho. Now on the other hand xD. Only thing I think is childish is fairy girl cartoon aimed for 3 year old children.

I thought all anime were action/shounen because that's all they showed on TV and all my friends who were into anime watched mostly action from what I could tell. I can't remember how exactly but I found Toradora one day realized there are non-action anime, and that is when I started getting into anime.

I suppose I didn't really think much of it. I just really saw it as more cartoons. My first experiences with anime would be with Yugioh and Pokemon. I was a bit of a Yugioh dork when I was younger. I didnt really become aware of the term "anime" really until I started watching some of the Toonami block. Most of the time then, I just watched Naruto though.

I watched Hamtaro when I was that age, but it didn't really become an obsession. I just lumped it together with Pooh Bear, Peanuts, and anything else I categorized as "good cartoons". I never had cable growing up so I watched it on VHS. Hamtaro is similar to Winnie the Pooh in a lot of ways and I never even knew that it wasn't originally in English.

I watched some 'One Piece' and 'Naruto' when it first aired on TV in Australia (around 2004), i was only 10 at the time and although i enjoyed it; i forgot about it and missed episodes because at that age all you want to see is the world. skipping forward more than 10 years i knew that there was a thing called 'anime' but i had never seen much of it until a started turning into a hikikomori then a friend suggested 'death note' and from then i turned into a fully fledged otaku-hikikomori complete with many figures, walls covered in posters and of course a functional Katana.

I thought Miyazaki's/Studio Ghibli's works were great (the only anime I recognized as actual anime back then) and everything else, Digimon, Pokemon and the likes, were just shows on TV. I never really thought about anime besides rewatching Digimon and the Ghibli films we had until 1,5 years ago when I got hooked.

Anime when i was a child was things similar to pokemon and DBZ then while we got older naruto and inuyasha.....i always thought it was so cool but later i turned away from it and stopped for a few years. Then started totally new rewatching all the old series from the start and anime had once again captivated me and grabbed me in!
opinions change but anime has always been that thing which still holds its childhood glow yet is that adult passtime we love for its maturity yet child like nature

When I was younger I thought animation were mostly catered to children with like Disney, Ghibli, Pokemon, Digimon etc. and the only non-kids anime title I knew before getting into the medium was Death Note.

Funnily enough, that was one of my first anime when I was 11 or 12
