Youtube now blocks adblockers: a fair decision to help the original creators or a capitalist abuse?

A genuine question on where do you stand?

I have been using Youtube since the beginning of days. my account there apparently dates back to 2009 and I have always preferred this one over spotify or anything else. you see, I would say our history dates back to quite a lot of time. emo songs listened to at high school, playlists filled with jokes I no longer understand and billions of documentaries.

but the moment they introduced their invasive ads, I got an ad blocker and lived my life happily ever after, but now I can´t watch more than three videos as after that YT gets blocked. I still stand my ground, I am stubborn.

I have heard about many youtubers getting very rich (Mr Beast? I have never watched a video of his, but good for him, I guess?) and I have heard many youtubers saying "YT doesn´t pay that much, we are getting money only from sponsors" (basically you have to watch one video of a YT ad and then watch another ad within a video of a youtuber that gets sponsored) so I dunno what to make out of this situation.

am I really ruining the content creators by using the ad blocker? or are the content creators being ruined by a greedy company?
are there any youtube-like free alternatives?

thank you for your participation!

I wouldn't mind watching an ad before the video begins in YouTube but I do not want 6 adds in a 12 min video which is in every single video. Which is the reason I'm using adblock and for me it's working perfectly right now.

I'm against ads. If it's some web site, which I like, which I keep visiting, then I don't mind whitelisting it and let it to show some ad in some corner. But when I open video and I don't know if I'll like it or not, will I watch it again or not, but Youtube shoves in my throat ads nevertheless - no.

I think hackers will create new ways to block ads on Youtube and we will get new ads blockers.

@Azuchi might be a question of time. it worked for me well enough till today when I got a message that I am allowed to watch three more videos till I get blocked.

I believe it might a be a question of a country because I have googled some older reddit posts where people were threatened with the same message 6 months ago while I was still enjoying my time on YT with and adblock :)

happy times
enjoy while you can

@Ysrwii I wonder what an actual youtuber could say about this. do they really profit from this change or is it only Google?
in the end of the day, I am just going through some alternatives and I might delete the adblock for YT and only use it when I really need it, but please someone create something to overcome this, I will not survive ads every five seconds.

@effy_ You can google for ways to avoid Youtube's ads blockers block. Here for example:
https://cybernews.com/best-ad-blockers/bypass-adblock-detection/

Maybe something from the list will work. If you dig Internet more, I think you'll find more "cures".

Either way it's a bad business move because it makes you not want to watch as many videos so you just leave the site sooner. I think video ads beyond a certain data size and unskippable length online should be criminal. They are effectively stealing your internet connection against your permission of what data you requested. It uses far more data than reasonable and you pay the price with your internet costs.

Any who choses not to block ads is an idiot. I even talk through elderly relatives on how to install it and get it working.
They don't deserve any benefit of the doubt with all the malware and scams.
Get u block origin and they block the blocking of the ad block so it works fine for me.

What would be needed is for that to throttle the download speed so the ad doesnt load more than the amount it needs to skip otherwise it still is eating up data.

Did you try AdNauseum? It was the ad blocker Google was trying to crack down hard on because it hurts them so much by corrupting data with false clicks and views of ads lol

Sounds like a skill issue. I use Adblock Plus and uBlock Origin on Firefox and I have not received any pop-up message about ad blockers on YouTube. Perhaps it makes a difference if you are logged in.

I would stop using YouTube if symphonies had to be interrupted by silly commercials in the middle...

@Meusnier I Am logged in with ublock origin, and it rather frequently fails to block the ad detection.
But eventually it'll work again, in the meanwhile just opening the video in a private window works.

@JaniSIr Check if you have other adblocks working and disable them, leaving only ublock on. Some browsers and youtube related extensions have a built-in adblock, so youtube might be detecting those.
Also, deleting filters cache in ublock options and updating it might help.

For other workarounds, you can stream the video through your media player (PotPlayer and VLC have the option, don't know about others. Android version of VLC also has it, so you can do it on mobile too) or download the video and watch offline.

@QPR I had the ublock on other devices and it doesn´t work anymore.

Anti-ad block walls have long been an issue for all ad blockers, not just ours. While we do believe that content providers should have the right to decide how you interact with their page (or opt not to, if you choose to bring your web traffic elsewhere), we know YouTube’s walls are particularly distressing to many of our users.

We also know that part of what makes Adblock Plus valuable to our users is that we block YouTube ads. And while we don’t have a solution to implement at the moment, our teams are working hard to figure out what we can do in light of these changes. We certainly haven’t given up the fight against anti-ad blocking!

source: Ablock website

Those terms are as of October 2023 and they are slowly being implemented. If your "elderly" relatives are still able to watch Youtube without ads, that might be just a question of time because Google has gotten pretty much more aggressive with their adblocking policy.

It has been happening since June, but now if you don´t allow it after three videos, it will stop playing any sort of videos at all. Here is an article about it, here.

everything was fine whe it showed just this:

but now, it is showing this:

and the second one is a real baddie

@Meusnier I don´t know guys, what I am doing wrong. I use various browsers on various devices (Edge on the computer, Firefox on the computer too and Chrome on the tablet) and it warns me everywhere.

Do you really not get this warning?

because from what I have read once you start getting this one there is no way back. I used to use adblock too.

I don't, and in fact, I have learnt about this change when I read your thread. I am never logged in and I never get this warning. Neither Adblock Plus or uBlock Origin is detected on Firefox.

@JaniSIr see, as someone who remembers Youtube being ad-free or having one add per three videos, in the beginning of it, I just find this terribly annoying. why do I have to watch a cookie ad for the millionth of time a day???

I mean, I get you though. it happens that I am searching for something and I can´t even open the article just because of the adblock. maybe it´s me, maybe it´s the Internet becoming weirder. for now, I have whitelisted YT but I know it will drive me crazy until I find a good solution.

There are a lot of moronic takes here. Stealing your internet connection? You can press that "X" button on your browser tab. Less people are watching YouTube? You mean less people are stealing YouTube's bandwidth.

I use adblock because it's good for me. Only entitled Karens project their own needs onto everyone else.

MAL is filled with entitled Karens.

If I built a product that I'm selling, I would be totally okay if less thieves stole it off the retail shelves and pretended as if they were doing me a favor by doing so.

When you access a website's content you should expect it to load only what it needs not an unreasonable amount more. When someone intentionally exceeds reasonable expectations of what they will take from you in an exchange it is akin to an act of theft not in a literal sense but in a real financial sense. A transglobal mega corporation like Alphabet / Google / YouTube has all the resources where it is perfectly capable of load balancing and they already get preferential treatment whenever under elimination of net neutrality as well as still profit from ads loaded up even if someone just loads fifty videos at once they always try to account for above average loads. If they lack DDoS protection it is on their negligence since they certainly arent short on finances. There is a difference between breaking even enough to run servers or making a profit for inventive versus just being outright greedy. I said there should be a limit on the ad size and frequency. What is wrong with that? Even the US government regulates ads in several ways, their volume level is one of them and their amount of air time and they regulate what ads can air and when. You provide no countering argument just your usual whispered behind the back insults while making off base interpretations of whatever is said on any given topic. You provide no solution merely a bandage. What happens when ad blockers truely can no longer be functional? Only regulations can actually change anything if comes to that.

You provide no solution merely a bandage. What happens when ad blockers truely can no longer be functional? Only regulations can actually change anything if comes to that.

When you access a website's content you should expect it to load only what it needs not an unreasonable amount more.
That's your own problem. A website exists as a service. It's a privilege, not a right. No one is forcing you to use it and you don't get to make demands on how you think it should operate, or go accusing something of being theft for not ceding to your unreasonable expectations. The only theft here is you violating the TOS, robbing them of the method they use to fund the service they provide. You have an option to pay a subscription but you don't to that either.

Load balancing costs money.

What does DDoS even have to do with this?

Who are you to dictate what is considered making "too much" profit?

LOL at you saying I provide no counter argument when this is just cut and dried fact and you're desperately trying to justify this wild entitlement you have as if there is even something here to argue about.

The US government only regulates ad quantity on radio because radio frequencies are public property that are leased out to companies. The US government doesn't own "www.youtube.com". This is net neutrality, not your imaginary universe where the government and individual users dictating how other users should run their own websites somehow constitutes net neutrality.

@JaniSIr see, as someone who remembers Youtube being ad-free or having one add per three videos, in the beginning of it, I just find this terribly annoying. why do I have to watch a cookie ad for the millionth of time a day???

I hope Odysee picks up or something
@effy_ it used to have like a banner pop up ad, that you just had to close..
Now it's two unskippable and very loud video ad, and that's just before the video, it might get interrupted multiple times, even for short ones.

@ArabianLuffy to be fair, the "blocking the ads" I am talking about has been in action since October 18th and seems to be slowly finding ways on how to ruin the blockers so it might just be a question of time.

unless you have already seen this message and found out how to get your way around it, you might just get it later. this is the one that even Adblock has problems getting rid of.

@effy_: the thing is, I have a Premium on YouTube, because I use YouTube on iPhone a lot more than Google Chrome. It’s impossible to block ADs if you use YouTube app.

I will test ADBlock, but only on FireFox browser on PC. No login to YouTube account.

@ArabianLuffy oh got it, sorry. well it is also a way. for now I am allowing ads on YT which makes me get two ads for every video. I can assume it will only get worse as they will want to bully me into getting a premium.

I see a lot of people don´t share my problem though so it might be either a question of time (again, I have forgotten to mention, I got some warning before and I was able to just ignore them and watch as many as I could, I also had the option similar to fadblock deg has mentioned, but once it got to this point where they are threatening you with three videos there is just no way out). luckily ad blocks will improve soon.

my admiration that you pay for the premium though. that´s very generous of you

@katsucats The really entitled one here are those companies that think they deserve our attention to coerce us into buying garbage, just because they gave a little money to YouTube or whatever other venue they choose to advertise on.

I had my share of disagreements with this guy, but he is right. Youtube is a business and bandwidth costs don't come cheap. For comparison, Vimeo requires creators to pay for the bandwidth they consume. A few years ago, you had to spend as much as 900 dollars a year for unlimited video uploads and if you had more than 5tb worth of videos. This applied to the most popular creators that generated a ton of video traffic and consumed the most bandwidth.
source: https://www.feedough.com/vimeo-business-model-how-vimeo-works-makes-money/

As of today, Vimeo doesn't tell the cost on their website - it asks you to contact sales for the enterprise pricing plan. They also offer cheaper tiers, but those come with significant restrictions in terms of video uploads. There is a free tier that only allows 3 videos a month .To be able to upload 2 videos a day, you need to shell out $12 usd/month, or $144 usd/year. This is actually a discounted price of $20 usd/month or $240/year. If you want to upload up to 120 videos, the cost jumps to $20 usd/month or $240/year (discounted from $33 usd/month or $396/year). The most expensive, non-enterprise plan lets you upload 500 videos a month (16-17 videos per day), and costs $65 usd/month or $780/year (discounted from $108 usd/month or $1296/year)

People here are being entitled. Which isn't surprising - the anime community - and internet community as a whole - is notorious for being entitled.

Honestly, people will find a way to bypass adblock blocker. If Youtube really want to control bandwidth costs, they would need to start charging creators, just like Vimeo. I'm not sure the ads on Youtube are even enough to cover the costs of bandwidth to be honest.

Only a small fraction of $$$ comes from yt ads, maybe more after this change but still relatively small. Patreon, YT memberships, streaming donations and sponsorships are where it´s at.

I hate this war on adblocks. Very bad trade, the yters don´t get much more anyway and it´s terrible for the consumers. That said, i´m actually paying for YT premium. Mostly because i can´t get an adblock to work through chromecast, though.

e: also "allowlisted" lol.

It's just corporate stuff. Subsidiaries are expected to be self sufficient and currently the only reason Youtube makes Alphabet money is because of the user data they're able to sell. Ads and Premium subscriptions cover something like 80% of Youtube's running costs. A single premium user is worth as much as a several hardcore free users or a whole town of average casual users. Ads only cost $5 for a thousand views, most of that goes to the creators, and if people skip the ads then the advertiser pays nothing.

This isn't actually a necessary change, since Youtube still does make a lot of money for Alphabet from user data and creators get most of their money from off-platform means like patreon or merch sales anyway (which Youtube has also made their own versions of to keep more of that money on the website itself).

Blocking ad block isn't a new thing, though. It's always a cat and mouse game. Ad blockers are even already updating to block Youtube's anti-adblock features. Adblock has arguably become too easy to use, with some phones even coming with it turned on by default, meaning even your grandma who is still getting used to how to send emails is also blocking ads. True adblock will always be available to the people who care enough, but if Youtube making it more difficult means that more normies subsidize the power users then that can be considered a good thing.

@effy_
Have a look at the lists you subscribe too. One of them obviously works. I still the get cookie popup at 1st which is annoying but not as annoying as ads every 4 mins.

@OiantakuYT that´s the thing, they claim, they want to help the creators to get paid but some youtube creators say they get very little paid. not to mention that now since I have allowed the ads on YT, I get 3 ads per 30 min video AND a promo done by the youtuber himself that does it for sponsorship :D.

@effy_ the reason the creators don't get paid much from ads in the first place is because the vast majority of people watching their video block ads.
no ads -> youtube don't get paid -> creators don't get paid.
it doesn't matter if your video has 100 trillion views, when only 10 of them had ads enabled.

@DreamingBeats seeing how many people even on MAL actually have YT premium, I wonder just how right and just how "little money" they actually get. also just how do you distribute that money? what if one youtuber gets a fanbase that actually doesn´t have any adblocks will they get more money than a youtuber who has a fanbase of people who only use adblocks? I hope the distribution is fair in that case too? there must be stats for that for sure.

I personally wouldn´t really mind if youtube went back to the days when it was just for people who liked making videos in their free time and those who watched them in lower quality. I am completely fine with that if you ask me. somehow it was all sustainable for years so let´s pretend like it can´t be done without ads anymore and that it is anything more than greediness.
