I always thought it was natural for a male to grow taller than his father and for a female to grow taller than her mother, but I guess it all comes down to who you inherit the genes eh? I'm bad at genetics NGL.

What is your case? Are you significantly taller than your parents or you're just shorter?

I grew 1 inch taller than my dad so I probably inherited his genes, and I guess this is the average eh?

Edit: Some typos on my pool I'm tired.

I'm pretty sure my biological dad was a short ginger man, based on what my mother told me (I have no memory of him), so I'm glad I didn't get his genes as I'm quite happy as a tall brunet. My step dad was a giant however. Never got close to him

I am shorter than my dad.  On the bright side, it means less back pain for the future.  A short mom will influence height of the offspring.  This is often why shorter chics date extra tall guys.

Unusually, I had a friend who had a short mother and a short father but he was over 6ft tall. I was always told by my mother that nutrition was everything, and she put emphasis on milk when I was young so much I would drink milk thinking I was getting taller.

I'm not fully grown yet, but I hope to be the same height as my father or two inches taller than him. Evidently, I have to help myself grow because my older brother didn't, and now he's an inch or two shorter than my father.

I'm probably less than an inch taller than him, but I am taller! He always beats in me in arm wrestling, though. Like, the guy doesn't even lift, but he has all this strength from somewhere - it's absolutely crazy. (We haven't arm-wrestled for years, though.) He only ever lost once to a blacksmi... okay, I'm getting side-tracked here. I'm taller, yes!

I'm way shorter. My Dad is 6'1 and my Mom is 5'2, but I inherited my Mom's height gene so I'm pretty short at 5'6. Thanks for that, Mom. I used to be way more insecure about it but I think I'm better now

My apologies I was so tired that I forgot about the rest of the world, in your case you're 5 inches shorter than your father.

My father must be something like 165cm, while my mother is pretty tall, at 180cm. I grew taller than both however, which is weird and I'm not sure how that works genetically.

Maybe I'm adopted O.o

There's a random part to it depending of what you inherit so it's always to predict exactly how tall a child will be, but regardless, it depends on BOTH parents. If his mother was short, chances are very high that the boy will be shorter than his father. If the father was short, chances are high that the girl will be shorter than her mother. And so on. My mother was shorter than 160 so both me and my little brother ended up being shorter than our father by quite a bit. In reverse, my father first had his first child in his first marriage with a woman that was quite a bit taller than woman's average height, and therefore my older brother is around 10cm taller than my father.

It's possible I've heard that about 70% rely upon genetics and 30% are dependent on childhood nutrition. If you get enough nutrition there is a chance of being significantly taller.  His dad must be 5'9ish and he is a solid 6.

I'm a couple inches shorter than my dad, but we're both over 6'0".

There's likely some regression to the mean where if your parents are tall (short) relative to the average then you will be shorter (taller) than them.

I'd be curious to see how tall the parents are for those answering the poll to see if that'a true.

She is tall for a female. I guess you got those 13 cm from some good nutrition and tall family genes from her side then.

I don't like the idea of me being taller than my parents. I will forever be their little daughter, so it defeats the purpose if I'm being taller than them.

There is something called epigenetic too. If your parents, especially your mother, starved or took in too little calories and nutritions over a longer timespan for example, for whatever reason, even before your mother has been pregnant, it will affect you.
Same goes for high stress levels and all kind of circumstances.
People often start that nurture vs. nature debate, but they are thightly linked.
