What anime did you put off that ended up becoming a favorite?

Be it because it was out of your genre, the length, or any other reason.

I wrote off Non Non Biyori because of the premise. Before that, I had watched slice of life of course, but they always had some sort of plot, drama, or romance going on around them. I couldn't understand the point of watching something where nothing really 'happens', so I put it off for a while. But when I watched it eventually, I fell in love with its simplicity, the joy of just seeing the characters interact through various events, and the silence (or gentle music) that let the sweeping, rustic views speak for themselves. It was so soothing to watch in a way I hadn't experienced before! It was my first iyashikei, and it's the reason why I love iyashikei so much in general, now~

We can always go somewhere again.

Jujutsu Kaisen,
The anime looked so mediocre if judged based on cover and synopsis alone, then thankfully my expectation was wrong when I watched its 1st episode :)

Magia Record: Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica Gaiden

At first time I thought it just madoka magica spin-off and will ended badly as the original. But it's turns out by single mc Iroha Tamaki that change my mind. I love with her character as the story going and make it one of my favorite anime all the time.

I put off The Tale of the Princess Kaguya because it seemed so different compared to the rest of the Ghibli catalog. Turns out it was a uniquely animated beautiful, tragic story with a lot to say about the profound themes it explores and is now my 2nd favorite Ghibli movie

Bunny Girl Senpai was one I've been putting off for a while. When I initially watched it, the first couple of episodes didn't really hook me. But when I gave it another chance some time later, it ended up resonating with me a lot.

Biggest one for me was Hajime no Ippo. I honestly didn't expect the fights to be so engrossing and the characters to be so enjoyable. Ippo ended up becoming an all time favorite for me.

Another would be Tokyo Godfathers. I wasn't a big fan of all the another Satoshi Kon films, so I assumed I wouldn't like it either. But, when I finally did watch it, it turned out to be his best film by far.

Naruto, I dropped it after first episode. Then, after having nothing else to watch for a while, I watched a second episode and dropped again. After 3 ep I did not drop but watched until 5 and thought that this is getting somewhere. Closer to the end of Zabuza ark I thought this is the greatest art I have even seen. I still do not like Konohamaru episode as I did back then, as for Iruka episode I do not have strong feelings.

When I first watched Code Geass first time, I also did not liked certain parts like scene between Lelouch and CC in his bedroom. I guess the Massacre Princess episode is where I started to truly love it.

Because of these two experiences I used to never drop anime in the past, expecting it to get better eventually. Then some other show convinced me to not do it anymore, possibly Saint Seiya: the Lost Canvas

My first Anime Ever MHA my gf at the time told me to watch it and as the Denji I am I agreed

I loved it, now I can see its mid but it was a great intro

Also Darwins Game, super goofy show, not serious and not great but it was a lot of fun
REGULAR SHOW TROUNCES ANY ANIME. PEAK FICTION

We protect other species because humans themselves are lonely creatures. We protect the environment because humans themselves don’t want to go extinct. What drives us is simply self-gratification. But I think that’s fine, and that it’s really all there is to it. There’s no point in despising humans by human standards. That’s right. So in the end, it’s hypocritical for us to love Earth without loving ourselves.

Summertime Render.
I was a lot of episodes behind, while it was airing, and went "oh" at the beginning, after seeing Shinpei waking up and falling headfirst into Hizuru. Based on that, I thought it was gonna be an anime with fanservice and those kind of sex-jokes (mind, I didn't know anything about it).

But I was so pleasantly surprised - the anime was so intense, interesting and the animation was great.
I actually was very excited for each episode, each week. Had to give it a 9!

Psycho Pass

I'm not into this kind of sci-fis and even after starting it I had doubts. Probably the charecters are what I like the most about this show.

Serial Experiment Lain

I don't had high hopes for Avant Garde before watching it. It made me curious about the genre.

For seasonal, I'm currently enjoying Urusei Yatsura and all of the descriptions/background leading up to it. High quality cast and I'll probably end up watching the dub too. Not really a favorite but it answers the initial question.

I severely disliked the 1st episode of Bakemonogatari when I uncovered some nasty 480p max quality on Crunchyroll 10 years later back when they uploaded it to the site in 2011 and abandoned any updates. The sunset setting along with the (expected) seizure dialogue was really off-putting but Senjougahara's arc managed to save my attention span towards the show.

Can't really say the same for the other boy/kid protagonist shows with their youngest viewers being the true demographic as a shared age group. I watched Pokemon and played Kingdom Hearts both on repeat, that's enough for a lifetime.

School Days: given everything that people say about it, I figured I'd hate it so I kept putting it off. eventually, my curiosity got the better of me and I watched it all over a couple of days. I thought it was honestly very good and I respect it for being unique and ballsy: I don't say that about many things.

another anime that surprised me was Black Lagoon. my usual taste is psychological, avant-garde stuff and I kind of ignored it because I figured it wouldn't be my thing, but a friend watched it and loved it so I watched soon after and I thought it was great! Revy is one of my fave characters ever and I think that the show is much more complex than people give it credit for.

Maria-sama ga Miteru (Marimite) got into my top 10 after a re-watch and after a 2nd re-watch a few weeks later it was clear it had to be #1. Nodame Cantabile got in my top 10 immediately.

As for reasons: for Marimite I didn't think shoujo-ai (that was the tag back then instead of Girls Love) would be interesting but as it turns out the writing and feels were off the chart.

Nodame because I wasn't into classical music. This show showed me the error of my ways :)

Honey & Clover because of the art style.

Fruits Basket because I avoid shows that looks like it's possily a love triangle or reverse harem, and this looked like one.
