It's awesome I highly recommend it. It's one of my favorite games of the 2010s.
Word of advice: if you're playing on PC stop by the PC gaming wiki to see what mods you need to fix the game because even after so many years some aspects of the PC port are still broken.

Absolutely a fantastic game.

This ground is soiled by those before me and their lies. I dare not look up for on me I feel their eyes

I've never played it, but it looks boring and horrible, so I won't play it.

Highly recommended. Good OST and atmosphere. However, it's not GoTY for me. Still a very good game.
It doesn't matter if you like LoGH,Monster etc.If you are a jobless or college/school dropout living in your mom basement, you are still an unintelligent loser. Taste in anime does not make you a better person.

it's a masterpiece in terms of story, atmosphere, visuals, music, etc. and the way the story is told by making use of new game+. if you are more about the gameplay than the story you may not like it to the same extent. if you are a serious lore digger and watch videos about/play the old drakengard games you'll probably love it all the more. it's a standout story in a contemporary gaming and in contemporary fiction in general imo.

i thought the gameplay was "fine." combat is pretty easy and fun, hack and slash style; or you can run around shooting with your pod basically forever until enemies die. you technically can lose all your chips, but it's not ever a huge deal unless you play like a total moron. i didn't feel very compelled to put much strategic thought into upgrading weapons or using chips, so rather than feeling like an action rpg those elements felt like they were just kinda there to me. it's very easy to play it for hours and hours without thinking or getting bored, but isn't very mechanically challenging or unique imo.

I haven’t played Nier, but I watched a playthrough of the 1st game. The story is an actual masterpiece, and I virtually never say that about RPGs.

It's a pretty good game. It has some interesting philosophy food for thought stuff with fun hack n slash esque combat and a great ost. The story and characters are definitely pretty good too.

the soundtrack more than compensates for it's slightly flawed gameplay

I think it's a flawed but pretty enjoyable game. The themes of personhood, purpose and war are very well incorporated into the world and not just something that is told to you in the main questline. The part where the machines cause deficiencies in their network to prolong the war was quite impactful to me. Although I did by and large disliked the Route B. As much as I like 9S, I thought playing the whole main questline over again felt redundant since they were almost always together anyway with the exception of 2 parts of the game. And the hacking thing gets old fast. I also thought the storytelling was a bit too sparse for my liking. I like the "show don't tell" technique, but that doesn't mean exposition is always inferior. It gets a bit ridiculous when the supplementary content has noticeably more lore than the main game. I'm not even exaggerating when I say that.

I also have an issue with one of the massive spoilers in terms of foreshadowing and how poor it was but I've already talked enough so. In either case, it is something you should be experiencing all the same.

Game playwise it has abit of everything I enjoyed it.
Is it a masterpiece to me, no.

But its still a really good game and I would recommend it if you enjoy bullet storms, hack and slash or platforming.

Both what dictates a game as masterpiece is subjective. I enjoy it, but I know people who don't. So personally I would call it great.

Those who undergo suffering and spread it to others. And those who undergo suffering and avoid giving it to others." -Alice
“Beauty is no quality in things themselves: It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them; and each mind perceives a different beauty.” David Hume
“Evil is created when someone gives up on someone else. It appears when everyone gives up on someone as a lost cause and removes their path to salvation. Once they are cut off from everyone else, they become evil.” -Othinus

What makes Nier probably memorable is 2B and maybe the story. I'm sure it would've been a forgettable SE game had 2B been some Generica anime boy. The gameplay is solid but nothing experimental, what most people and I will say is the characters and the world is what makes it a "masterpiece" as it is a spin-off of another spin-off set in an alternate reality.

Saying "yes" or "no" to either extreme is too hyperbolic for my interests, so I'll just leave this here:

It's safe to say that I like the game that I spend over 100 hours playing.

Top 5 games for me, a masterpiece

I've been giving it a look, and I'm extremely unimpressed. The bit where you have to replay the same half hour at the start again and again for mere seconds of practice at not getting instantly killed by the big wheels is terrible game design, and then early on, you get to a point where you can't continue they game until you analogously-racistly attack this guy who doesn't want to fight you, which ruins any chance of me caring about the protagonists or story. If the player is expected to play evil characters, then this should be obvious from the basic presentation, and also the game cannot really be too serious. Or it should be something with minimal interactivity like a visual novel. Instead you get this situation which comes across as "I, the enlightened game designer, know that killing everything arbitrarily is actually a bit suspicious, but you, my ignorant game player, MUST attack anything I expect you to, so I can educate you about how you are wrong".

I also deeply dislike the way it suddenly goes 2D, because again, it's taking away control.

It's a good game but not a masterpiece. Some of the plot elements, namely the ones left over from Nier Replicant, are just nonsense, and the visuals could be improved in many ways. The soundtrack might be the closest element of the game to a masterpiece. The soundtrack is really good.

Now that I've finally played the game, I must admit the story is a huge downgrade over that of the previous game. And isn't the story the only reason this game is popular? At least it's better than the average seasonal anime. And with Nier now an actual seasonal anime, even those who dislike action games can enjoy the story.
