Good evening, fellow forum users~ ✩ This is my very first poll thread, so not only am I looking forward to what kind of responses you all have to offer, but I also can't wait to see how this will go and what kind of result will take the lead. So here goes!! As usual, I will start the thread by telling you why I decided to make this thread, or at least what inspired it. First off, there are plenty of forum threads on MyAnimeList that ask about your favorite anime of the season, whether the current season at the point of the thread's creation sucks or not, and (specifically in Casual Discussion) what your favorite season of the year is. But there doesn't seem to be a thread discussing about the four seasons of a year and how they are used as time settings for anime and manga! So let's talk about that. Second, I read some part of a book I have about "mindful writing" that had a section about writing about one of the four seasons or changing a story idea into one that better suits one of the four seasons for its sense of atmosphere. As someone who sometimes tries to write/draw story ideas in their spare time, I thought that was a cool thought experiment. The third reason why I decided to make this thread is because sometimes I will see people asking for recommendations of anime that take place in the winter in the Anime & Manga Recommendations board. For those threads, the only recommendation that comes to my mind is Kanon (2006). While that show is decent and is very good at using the winter setting for its sense of atmosphere, I soon found myself thinking—is that seriously the only anime that comes to mind when I think of winter? Are there no other anime that are primarily set in winter that AREN'T Christmas specials? Maybe people should be making more anime that are set in winter other than just for Christmas specials? Wait, what about fall anime?? Whoa whoa wait, not even Key has made a fall-themed anime yet??? Aaaaaaagh, why can't I think of any good anime that fully indulge themselves into a season other than summer?!?!? ...So... yeah. ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ So that brings us to the question: Which of the 4 seasons would you like to see as the main time setting for more anime and why? I personally like each season and can't seem to pick which of the four seasons I'd like to see more in anime at the moment... so instead, I will briefly cover each of the 4 seasons and what they may have to offer for anime, so that you may have a better idea for your decision. Also, it'd make for a prettier looking first post. If you really want more details, just go use the internet and look it up. I mean, that's what I did, admittedly not very much (sorry in advance if these descriptions are too limited, I'm mainly typing based on what I've seen around here and stuff as well as some brief internet searching) but still... don't be lazy. :P Spring The first season of the year, characterized by its equal-length days and nights, the blossoming of flowers, and sometimes rain. Some holidays associated with this season include St. Patrick's Day, Easter, and Mother's Day; Japanese holidays include White Day, Hinamatsuri, Children's Day, as well as Golden Week. Some typical activities are gardening, spring cleaning, hanami (cherry blossom viewing), and just generally going outside to see that spring is in the air. Summer The second season of the year, characterized by longer days and shorter nights, the beach, and extremely hot weather. Some holidays associated with this season include Father's Day and Independence Day; Japanese holidays include Marine Day, Mountain Day, Tanabata, and Obon. Some typical activities are cooking out (usually barbeque), a test of courage, participating in summer festivals, and going to the beach. Autumn The third season of the year, characterized by equal-length days and nights, leaves turning orange/red before they fall off of trees, and somewhat cool temperature. Some holidays associated with this season include Halloween and Thanksgiving; Japanese holidays include Respect for the Aged Day, Sports Day, and Culture Day. Some typical activities are raking the leaves, picking out pumpkins, eating something nice and warm (it's usually something with cinnamon in it, am I right?), and trying not to die during Black Friday sales. Winter The fourth and last season of the year, characterized by shorter days and longer nights, snow, and jingle bells (don't lie, all the winter-themed music you hear always have jingle bells). Some holidays associated with this season include Christmas, Kwanzaa, Valentine's Day, and New Year's; Japanese holidays include Coming of Age Day and National Foundation Day. Some typical activities are snowball fights, making snowmen, drinking hot chocolate, and staying inside to watch the snowflakes fall. ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ So once again, in case you forgot what the main question was... which of the 4 seasons would you like to see as the main time setting for more anime and why? Here are some supplementary questions that I would also like you to answer in your response:
Enjoy in thr—oh wait, before you do, daily reminder: you all should give Bottle Fairy a watch. I imagine the CGDCT fans will love this one (maybe some of them already knew about this one haha). It's a very cute short anime with four cute fairies as the main characters and most of the episodes use the seasons of the year very effectively, mainly through featuring many Japanese holidays and activities. When I was younger, this anime taught me a little about Japanese culture, because it also featured Japanese culture and some holidays. I have no idea who made this GIF or where Google found this from, but thank you internet, very cool And yes, before anyone asks for some reason, I did listen to seasonal music from the Bokujo Monogatari / Story of Seasons series while I made this thread. Hey, that's just the kind of thing you have to do for something like this. ;) Okay, now enjoy in thread. ✩ Edit 11/28/20 (17 minutes later): Fixed some grammatical issues. Edit 12/16/20: Edited title and poll question to something more noticeable and/or understandable, fixed some more grammatical issues too. Edit 1/1/2021: Closed the poll. Thank you 167 users for your contributions to my first poll thread!! |

Definetly Autumn because it has the best colors and provides the best scenery, and since autumn has no token holidays in Japan at least, it allows for the show to take itself normally while displaying that very nice atmosphere |

If I rated the seasons by my preference it would be Summer > Winter/ Autumn > Spring. Anyway, I'll go with Winter for this. What would I like to see? I really like the concept of snowball fights/ wars, so I'd like to see some of that. One manga I can remember that had it was Keroro, and it was awesome. Hmm I think Keroro showed off every season of the year. In terms of clothing, I am a big fan of mufflers, big thick coats, and the headwears that are typical for Winter, so that's also a plus. Another nice activity is building snowmen or different kinds of snow sculptures. A reason for having Christmas (which as a tradition predates Christianity, right?) and such in Winter is definitely that it's otherwise a somewhat gloomy season. It gets darker which usually isn't good for the mood, and when the land gets cold it's hard to get food and many animals migrate or enter a long sleep. So I think a theme for a Winter-based story would be making the best out of what you have. Trying to have as much fun as possible even if things aren't as you'd like them to be. Maybe some characters that disliked each other in the past can learn to embrace each other through some fun snow activities. When it comes to like motifs, I guess stars are a motif? I'd like to see moments where characters just sit somewhere and watch the stars, while surrounded by a city with Christmas lights maybe. I think stars are generally associated with Winter. Like there's usually a star on the top of each Christmas tree for example. Hmm Winter is probably also a time for reflecting since it comes at the end of the year (depending on where you live though). |

Winter, for sure. Frozen, snowy places are extremely visually pleasing for me and I think they make for great animation. Also, holidays during this time of the year are an essential element. I wanna see more of the Japanese perception of Christmas, but also whatever traditional holidays they have there as well. Some cultural exchange is always welcome in my view. |

what a well detailed thread, bookmarked! I would love to see more winter setting anime, not because of christmas or anything but because I see there are so few of them, that eternal spring-summer is kinda boring. erased was awesome being set in winter. and also, the rainy season, I think that's in july in japan, rain is good for setting, you can make sad anime or cool mysteries, it has that specific atmosphere. summer is my fav, I like the cheerfulness, the beach, the sea, the fireworks, the heat, the festivals |

Winter. It snows 8 months per year where I live so I relate a lot with this climate. It's also my favourite season since there is no annoying creatures outside like bugs and shirtless douchebags. |

Spring and Summer are everywhere. Fall is boring. Kanon is the only winter anime I can think of, and I believe that's one of the reasons it's my favorite Jun Maeda anime. Kanon and Air are the only Key anime that make meaningful use of their respective seasons. There's nothing wrong with Clannad, but it's the little details like this that give other shows the edge. |

I very much appreciate how detailed you were for your answer :) I agree, an anime with snowball wars would be pretty awesome. I haven't seen Keroro Gunsou (heard of it many times and I recognize the director), but that must've been pretty entertaining to watch. Maybe some hypothetical characters in a winter setting would be able to further show the differences in their interests/personalities by showing the audience the kinds of snowmen/snow sculptures they decide to make in the snow. That's some pretty good brainstorming you did there for theming and motifs, nice ideas! Catalano said: what a well detailed thread, bookmarked! autumn and winter, would love to see more about autumn aesthetic especially those fallen leaves and more warmth in the cold of winter. Yeah, I am actually hoping more anime set in tropical and subtropical territory though this is just geography location's problem. Last but not least is more anime set in rainy days, like anime that goes melancholy and depressed with some drama or romance. |

This is a pretty good topic actually. I enjoy seeing all seasons, but winter is definitely underrepresented in anime. Most shows only have a New Years episode and then they skip right to spring. I would like to see more winter episodes, especially late winter. Hyouka was nice in that aspect, it had a wintry Valentines Day episode. Also more shows set in a colder/snowier part of Japan would be nice. As for spring, we usually only see the cherry blossoms and then after that its already nice and warm sunny weather. I would like to see more early spring days in anime. When its still cool outside, maybe with overcast/hazy weather and flowers and trees are just starting to bloom and their leaves are still very very tiny. I enjoy summer episodes a lot, but I would also like to see more monsoon season episodes, imo its an interesting type of weather, as here where I live we don't really have that kind of season. More fall would also be nice, especially Halloween themed stuff. But also just having nice foliage in the background. And also just in general, I wish anime featured different types of weather more often (in any season), 90% of the time its sunny in anime, when in real life probably half of the days are overcast, so having more cloudy or rainy days would be a nice change. I also like it when characters clothes change according to season. Like sometimes I find it a bit questionable that characters are wearing the same school uniform shirt in May and in December without anything else. I know Japans winters are not very cold in most partts of the country, but c'mon give them some kind of coat or jacket in late fall/winter. (some shows do, but other just have anime girls wearing their one layer sailor uniform shirt in winter) |

For me, I would say that I really prefer the winter the most, even though in general I'm fine with any season. It's hard to describe why, but ever since I was a child, I always thought that there is something weirdly warm, and positive about winter, especially in December (cause Christmas, I guess), but also because characters feels very relatable, and close wearing winter clothes, their breath being visible, or even getting a cold... It really works well on some personal, and emotional level. But, personally, I do find watching winter setting stuff effective only in winter... |

Maybe it's because I'm a manga reader because most manga (especially the school ones) go through all the seasons, though if I had to pick one, I guess I'd go with Autumn. Seems like a perfect season honestly. |

I'd go for winter setting, but I would prefer if they don't use the season for celebrating holidays. I much rather they not waste episodes and use the setting for atmosphere (i.e. desolate) and tone emphasis. Also winter settings tend to bring more tragic/intense/conflict kind of stories which makes it more interesting. Winter season doesn't have to have snow either. It can just be daylight with cold mornings and can still have beautiful scenery. |

All the four seasons are beautiful in their own way. But my favorite is autumn. Autumn to me represents the border between summer and winter, that change from sunny and warm to cold and dark, and I think it has a beauty both strong and positive and also negative and melancholic. |

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi! I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom: "Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news. Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people. Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation. There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime. You should be watching Carole & Tuesday." |

I would like to see fall more. I just wanted to see more of the reds and oranges and browns on the trees. Maybe throw in a spooky or feastlike episode but mainly the trees. I feel the scenery would look truly great. As mentioned, there aren't really much anime utilizing autumn. Even tho I have not watch laid back camp, it would be interesting if they camped in the woods during the time of autumn but thats me. Unless they already did that then disregard this comment. I don't really think there was any anime really set in a particular season that utilizes said season as far as I can remember. The only moment I can think of which greatly utilizes like winter for the cold might have Benn Erased but thats about it. I am not sure if this has made its way to Japan, kinda want to see St.Patricks day just to see cute anime girls wearing green clothing and maybe Drinking if they are of age. |

Ah, finally, a thread that is original and not the 59th overrated anime thread. I would definitely like to see more winter anime. There is a serious lack of Winter themed anime and I would like to see a lot of them so I can save them for December, the time when I'll binge them all. Thank you to those who have recently contributed to this thread. I like reading all of you users' thoughts on this matter and would be welcome to reading more~ ★ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ Haneken2086 said: All the four seasons are beautiful in their own way. But my favorite is autumn. Autumn to me represents the border between summer and winter, that change from sunny and warm to cold and dark, and I think it has a beauty both strong and positive and also negative and melancholic. Zelkiiro said: I'd definitely like to see more Fall and Winter representation. Especially Fall. For the reasons just posted above me. Autumn sure has that strange beauty to it, huh? Those are quite some interesting thoughts you have there, especially when you thought the season made you feel melancholic. ✩ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ FireRifle64 said: I would like to see fall more. I just wanted to see more of the reds and oranges and browns on the trees. Maybe throw in a spooky or feastlike episode but mainly the trees. I feel the scenery would look truly great. I agree! Just imagine how lovely it'd be to see a romance anime set in autumn with that kind of imagery all around!! ♥ As mentioned, there aren't really much anime utilizing autumn. I can't name a single anime that's set in autumn and uses that season as a setting well, but I can name some anime specifically set during one season. There's a couple of anime specifically set in summer like Air, Uta∽Kata, and AnoHana. I can't name much for winter-themed anime that aren't Christmas specials though, as Kanon (2006) is the only one that comes to mind; I'm not sure if Uta∽Kata: Shotou no Futanatsu really counts since it could be argued as being just a Christmas special, even if it is clearly a sequel that takes place sometime after the original show that uses the wintertime well in my opinion. ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ Arin-san said: Ah, finally, a thread that is original and not the 59th overrated anime thread. I would definitely like to see more winter anime. There is a serious lack of Winter themed anime and I would like to see a lot of them so I can save them for December, the time when I'll binge them all. I've never seen snow ever in my life, so seeing it in anime makes me really happy. It pleases me greatly that you are satisfied with this thread. Yeah, more winter-themed anime would be nice. It's sad that you haven't seen real life snow though :( |
