Regardless of when we get pass this COVID-19 pandemic, I truly believe this has taught us that DEEP changes are in order for us humans.

This is not the first time humanity has faced a disease that has ravaged huge populations, but it IS the first time in modern history and we were WOEFULLY unprepared.

Healthcare MUST be a bigger importance going forward, there has to be better cooperation with each other.

This will NOT be the last pandemic or even the worse one that humans will face...

people don't take anything global seriously, they just know how to laugh and immerse themselves in their own incredibleness. The same happens in the manga, they only know how to laugh at the misfortune of others until it is their turn to suffer it.

I just got sent home from work after I had a coughing fit. Which is nothing unusual for me since I have GERD and shit happens. So I got pushed out of work out of pure panic which is understandable.

Temp is 98.2, so I'm not sick with it from this moment in time. But I may be self quarantined for 2 weeks without pay.

Kinda feel like I'm dreaming rn, this is all so fucking bizarre.

The point is not that we've been through worse, it's that none of that has actually taught us anything. Technology has helped us, no doubt, but it's the least possible help it could yield; in other words, we have failed to leverage the means at our disposal.

Once again, our tools are only as smart as we are at using them, which is not very smart at all. Human irrationality is at the heart of every disaster, and nothing's getting done about that, nothing.

And HIV. Many people sweep such diseases under the rug, but COVID-19 is hardly the most impactful disease in modern history. The only reason its getting so much spotlight is due to media. If we had such technology back when the bubonic plague was at its peak, the world would be on fire.

The largest concerns during this pandemic are the crashing markets with large corporations asking for gov bailout after poor economic choices in prior years, the dwindling of supplies that others (medical and non-medical personnel) so desperately need, and the massive lay offs, shitty companies that don't offer PTO, contractors & unpaid bills that will lead to further economic crisis.

The numbers have grown far too high, so a virus of any kind is more than welcome. Although this one has proven itself to be quite ineffective when compared to its prior versions.

Good point being made here. I mean look at all of the dipshits in Florida still chilling on the beach en-masse. There are so many prior epidemics/pandemics and resources online that can teach anyone with a brain a thing or two about viral transmission, yet spring break and fun somehow prioritize safety. And the worst outcome from this is that these people are likely going to turn out just fine; its the elderly and those with co-morbid conditions who suffer.

Some people never learn. Some people are so selfish.

I agree. If the Chinese government had not been keeping secrets. We could've put the flames out, before they spread. Or at least controlled it a bit.

I'm not a economist, or very well informed about this. So forgive any misinformation. If those companies had just made sensible financial decisions. The shitty companies would be more prepared and wouldn't need a bailout. Even if PTO isn't an option. They could just have employees, who don't need to be in the building all the time. Stay at home and just work from the computer.

you're being optimistic assuming the American public isn't going to lapse right back into their anti socialized healthcare, private insurance loving stance immediately after this is over. trumps somehow pulling higher approval rates among swing voters despite being the fuckhead who flubbed telling us about the virus in the first place? the dnc is going to keep shilling useless puppet Biden and toss bernie aside who's the only one who fares well against trump in a debate. fucking hell the brain worms are strong with the population of the US

Yep, its the end of the world but a new world will be born after that. Humans locked in their houses are going to be more commonly accepted than before.
All weebs creatures of the galaxy, hear this message. Those of you who listen will not be struck by western animation. You will no longer know hunger, nor pain. Your Anime have come to lead you now. Our strength shall serve as a luminous sun toward which all intelligence may blossom. And the impervious shelter beneath which you will prosper. However, for those who refuse our offer and cling to their western animation ways… For you, there will be great wrath.

While the pandemic has shown us that many jobs don't need to be done in-person, I doubt employers trust employees enough to permanently work remotely. Hopefully there will be a change because I'm loving all the home time I've gotten over the past week, but I am skeptical of any long term changes.

In the U.S this pandemic has clearly shown the TERRIBLE state that the American Healthcare is in, something MANY of us already know.

HOWEVER....we had ONE man a champion of the people who truly cares about fundamentally changing the TERRIBLE healthcare we currently have...and what is the result?

The establishment beat him down.

We are now in an unprecedented CRISIS that will almost undoubtedly cause a DEEP RECESSION the likes we have probably NEVER seen.

We will have potentially thousands die (unnecessarily) because we are not prepared for this nor did we want to change our ways BEFORE when we still had the chance.

And I say all of this as the BEST case scenario.

Anyone who still believes this will “go away” by magic or god knows what is deluding themselves.

We will have to bear with this for the next several months if not the entire year.

There is NO vaccine....and we are still almost a year away (realistically speaking).

And I don’t say these things to fear monger or whatever.

I say it as the BLUNT and BRUTAL realist that I am.

the history major in me is itching, knowing how people stormed the churches (which also worked as the hospitals) after the black plague (iirc, it's been a few years since i took that class).

granted, it's not the hospitals that are to blame, but big pharma. so time to storm the pharmacies??
nah, let's just raid the benefactors of big pharma's houses. cut right at the heart.

i'm suddenly reminded of the facebook argument i got into with a pharmacist's ex-wife over socialism about a month ago. she was all like "fuck socialism" and i'm all like "...democratic socialism is actually quite nice, wtf"

granted, in a way science is working against us with this change, as no one's gonna wanna riot while social distancing is such an important factor of flattening the curve and making sure more people end up okay.

so, ironically, likely the only way we'll have a strong enough social (and/or political) revolution is if things get much, much worse. as in, everyone-knows-someone-who-died worse.

in other words, like, italy worse. italy will likely implement changes, but america as it is now? ehh.

edit: now i'm just thinking about it this way:

edit 2: the title of this thread just reminded me of my favorite apocalypse story, a book called life as we knew it. granted, that apocalypse and this apocalypse ("apocalypse") are very different. the apocalypse in the book is by a meteor hitting the moon and bringing it closer, causing natural disasters everywhere... heh.

Yes, the US healthcare system is truly broken. There's no denying it. It has to change.

Yes, there is one candidate that has tried his best to drive for change. However, it comes to no one's surprise when a plan to fund medicare for all includes taxing offshore profits, impose fees for large institutions, adding a premium tax to the top 0.1%, instilling a progressive personal income, and adding a premium payment by employers, all of which threaten the wallets of the wealthiest in America.

Also bud, please don't forget your history. The great depression of the 1930s was THE single worst economic crisis in US history. On top of that, we just had a major recession 10 years ago due to the housing bubble which lasted 1.5 years and caused a global financial crisis. While this current pandemic may rival both economic crises, it's not like this is the first time we've seen this type of bloodbath in global economy.

The single take-away from this crisis is that humans are fucking stupid. We never learn. And the people punished for it are the ones whose words will never reach the top.

We'll continue to turn down a candidate who pushes for healthcare for all, which should be a right, not a privilege.

We'll continue to bail out massive corporations like airlines who didn't expect any economic crisis and continued to cash purchase buybacks. Fuck that.

We'll continue to prioritize our celebrities and VIPs over normal folk just because they have money

We'll continue to disregard health regulations and follow the words of our great leader who believes this crisis is well contained. Words aging like milk, as usual.

And once again, much like 2008, our stimulus package plan will be ineffective and the recession will hit with the federal debt tripled.

Here in the US my grandparents are at risk of dying from this pandemic because a bunch of Spring Breakers think this virus is a buzzkill and are still gonna gather and attempt to party, even though their actions could actually get people killed. They're even going on TV to bitch about bars closing down due to all this, completely ignoring the fact that everyone's losing their jobs because of this shit.

On every Monday, Wednesday & Friday, Seoul is holding a 'Kind Mask' campaign where people exchange their medical masks for cotton ones to help those who need them more like the medical staff and elderly.

Meanwhile, there are videos on twitter showing people fighting in supermarkets for antiseptics or toilet papers in Australia.

Change. It is a universal truth. I don’t know why so many people look around them and think that things will always be the way that they are right now (or a few weeks / months ago). Besides, we’ve seen things like Ebola recently but just because it didn’t hit everyone everywhere at once in the west nobody really gave a shit. Now people can’t get diapers due to panic buying and they are falling apart. Mindless extroverts who see their home as just a place to sleep are bored to tears right now lol

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with a shelf of unread books lol. With college and the internet I have too many distractions to regularly read. Which book(s) would you read first if the internet were to go out?
