| i wouldn't say its cool, but for a lot of people and characters its a reaction to something melancholic or sorrowful or stressful in ppls lives, which others can find attractive for various reasons |
| Cigars are even bigger sign of badassery in anime. Smoker from One Piece is a good example of that   And yes smoking is unhealthy and dangerous for many reasons. Vaping too. |

| In fiction anything can pretty much look cool if done right. I tend to not compare things to reality. In reality, it's cancer to smell and look at. Damn secondhand smoke effect. Smokers are basically slow poisoners that poison those around more than themselves. Really wish instead of smoking they would inject nicotine or something.. |

| Idk OP, but I'm right there with you. The power of the cigarette makes even characters as adorable as Chii-chan and Yuu have a sort of mysterious/misgiving air about them. (Of course, within the context of the story it isn't mysterious/misgiving at all. But damn if that isn't some aesthetic artwork.) |

It's like a trope, when someone wants to design a cool and stylish char, making them smoke cigarettes is one of the options to add to that stereotype. The coolness is there before the cigarettes in their conception tho. At least I'm pretty sure that's how it is for a lot of them. |

| Probably because of things like some of the responses in this thread that sound like they're being paid for by anti-smoking ad campaigns and how it's easy to encounter people like this every time the topic of smoking comes up, and showing a character smoking is basically having the character say "Look how incredibly little I care about these things" without even needing to say a word to convey as much. |

Sure, I smoked myself for nearly 13 years since I wanted to "look cool" and I was kinda forced into smoking by bad influences. Do I regret it? Yes, I do & I really wished I didn't started in the first place back in the day. I do feel healtier already by now, but I still know I have done a lot of damage to my own body and I really do hope I won't have to face any harm that I've done to my own body in the near future. |

| My Grandfather smoked his whole life. I was about 10 years old when my mother said to him, 'If you ever want to see your grandchildren graduate, you have to stop immediately.'. Tears welled up in his eyes when he realized what exactly was at stake. He gave it up immediately. Three years later he died of lung cancer. It was really sad and destroyed me. My mother said to me- 'Don't ever smoke. Please don't put your family through what your Grandfather put us through." I agreed. At 28, I have never touched a cigarette. I must say, I feel a very slight sense of regret for never having done it, because the idea of thinking smoking is cool gave me cancer anyway. |

Living too long, uncontrolled illness, driving your car at the wrong place and time, etc. Given where and how I make a living, I'm pretty well-versed in the variety of ways people can pass away, and that death and our time on this planet is not something we can really, meaningfully control at that. Smoking is only one of the very, very many possibilities of achieving such a thing - or in the majority of cases, more along the lines of hastening it. So given that immortality isn't really a thing yet, so 'til then, I guess, going to make the most of my time and do things I actually want to do rather than living in fear of an inevitability for literally every living creature on our planet, which seems far dumber to me than smoking does :> I'd also argue that a shorter-but-pleasurable time is preferable to a longer-but-restrained time, but that's a matter of perspective and whether or not one even likes smoking needs to be factored in as well. |
