I watch anime when I commute to uni very often. Obviously not explicit shows.

A way to kill time on commute like any other, I don't see how it's anything weird

I've got about 1.5 hours of public transport everyday so i watch anime on the train, bus etc. Why would I care what the random train people think of me? I've never had anyone talk to me about it, but I've never had anyone talk to me on the train before at all so take from that what you will.

99% of the time i am busy when im in public, but the extremely rare times i have enough time to sit down and watch an episode of anime in public then yeah i'll watch anime. I make sure what im watching has little to no ecchi in it and i have never gotten a reaction from watching anime in public. I don't care and neither does anyone else who sees me watching anime

Before I got a car, I used to watch anime on my laptop on every train ride that took over 40 minutes.

I don't now, cause I'm usually the driver, but I do read manga on a kindle whenever I'm bored pretty much anywhere.
And when I scroll through Twitter, a third of my timeline is anime porn. Some people notice it, but I'm not exactly hiding it. I had Highschool DxD pins on my bag in high school, and the shame removal training seems to have worked.

Kinda depends on who is around me.

  • If I'm around a lot of elderly or children I'll switch to something more PG.
  • If around teens or young adults (ours are judgmental enough to make a comment if you're watching something childish) I switch to horror and/or action.
  • If alone, eh w/e jumps to mind. As long as there's not too many boobs and butts being exposed.

You guys really need to learn how to not care about the opinions of those around you... it's part of having self-confidence.

Within moderation, I'll even look at hentai in public. Hell, I walked outside with this T-shirt. No one said anything to me. I had a big smile on my face too.

Once i have watched most of No game no life(8 or 9 episodes) with my friend (he have only seen like 3 anime series) during our few hours long bus ride, we used his laptop, i am pretty sure that if someone would like to peek, they could easily do so (we used earphones of course), most of my friends know that i watch anime and i often browse MAL/read manga at school so i am kind of used to this kind of situations. Still i mostly watch anime at home. Also nice t-shirt iDaire.

No, I wouldn't watch anything in public, this also applies to live action stuff. Even reading in public makes me feel uncomfortable. It's just something I prefer to do when I'm alone. But I can read/watch in a public place with no people around.

That wasn't the intension of my thread. Since I'm also the type of person who doesn't really care about such. I just wanted to hear other people's experiences and what they feel about it and how were the reactions they get. I sure hoped someone would actually meet another anime fan due to such incident and later even become acquaintance or such

I've watched anime in public once, getting a few judgemental remarks and some excitement. But normally I watch anime at home. I do read manga at school and on my way there, though - since it's more "secretive".

---
Not going to lie, if people ask me what I'm watching and they are far away from me, I just tell them "a show" so they don't judge me too harshly hehe.

Well, now I'm at college, I've started doing it a bit since the days drag on a lot more. As in watching anime OPs/EDs or AMVs on the coach and reading manga in the library (physical and digital). I would watch anime too but since the sites I use to watch anime are usually riddled with viruses, my phone's wi-fi would be shut off so unless I watch some crappy quality episodes on youtube, I can't do it at college. But going out in public surrounded by a lot of people... I'd probably just listen to music.

I use crunchyroll and funimation and such. Since I don't really stay home so commuting is the only time I don't do anything. Gotta put some use of that subscription every month.

My college was so CHILL about it; fans would just take their laptops to the cafeteria and start an anime and we'd get crowds of people all squishing together to watch the anime; IT WAS FUN TIMES. XD

MOOD. XD

Sometimes I will watch some on my tablet to pass the travel time though. I watched the last half of Ashita No Nadja like that which is probably the most 'Safe For Public Places' show you could watch. XD

Yeah, i do sometimes watch anime when commuting. If it's a longer trip and there's a good wi-fi connection, there's a good chance i'll spend that time watching some anime. So far nobody has given any weird glances. I mean it's not any of their business what i'm doing anyways and since i'm using earbuds it's not like i'm disturbing anyone either. However, I do try to avoid watching anime that i know might have ecchi scenes or sth like that in it.

Hell no, but I’ve read manga in public a few times before.

I would watch anime on my bus because I get off at one of the last stops so I’m on it for at least 30 minutes every day, but there’s so many people on it that I’m always next to someone and I prefer they don’t watch me watch my got damb japanese cartoons.

Reminds me of like last year though I’m sittin in one of my classes and the dude in front of me was deadass watchin naruto on his phone during a lesson. What a trooper.

No because
1) I can wait until I get home
2) I rather watch in the comfort of my home
3) I hate watching on a phone or tablet.
a) I don't like using my data for that since if I go under 2GB, I don't have to pay extra. Why pay more when I'm already paying Wi-fi at home?
b) mobile browsers suck completely. Navigating and getting to what I want from my desktop is vastly superior in every way.
c) if you miss something and you have to rewind, that's another annoying thing since I can have an easier time rewinding on a computer instead.
d) My wi-fi speed >>>>>>> my data speed. I hate seeing buffering on my videos
e) I hate downloading the file to then transfer from my computer to my mobile and then deleting the file on my mobile to make room for my mobile. Huge time waster. And no, I only have a phone and not a tablet.
f) and no, I'm not bringing my laptop just to watch a couple of fucking episodes. I rather it not get stolen, dropped, damaged or insert anything that can happen that I will regret. I rather have it charged when I can and remain safe in my home unless I'm going to someone else's house.
4) Although I always bring headphones, I hate getting interrupted or possibly interrupted whether it is by people walking passed my laptop screen, hearing loud people, or something else. The sun shining and then not shining repetitively on my screen as it passes through trees and buildings are also annoying (hell, the sun shining on screen is annoying in itself). What's worse is pausing thinking the interruption will take place or you want to make sure you're at the right stop but was a false alarm OR having to actually pause midway and stop for reasons like bus is at the stop.
5) Higher chance of concentrating less.

I used to carry my tablet around my college campus and watch Naruto on it between classes. Most people didn't see it since I had my back to the wall most of the time, but I didn't really care if someone did see what I'm watching anyway.

I don't use my tablet for the sites I watch anime on nowadays, and I can't carry my laptop around because it's not one of those small notebook PCs (it's heavy and would be a pain to carry around all day at university), but if I could keep doing that, I honestly would.

I really don't care what people would have to say about it?

Hell, I saw a girl watching Panty & Stocking on her phone on public transit and I was jealous that she was able to do that on her phone while I'm too busy paranoid that those sites will give my phone/tablet viruses, on top of the fact that you'd need a large data plan to cover doing that where there's no wifi.

TL;DR Used to do it, can't/don't really do it anymore, but still would if I were able to. Most people in university don't really give a shit; they've seen weirder.

If by "in public" you mean "all through work because I'm a night shift security guard and I can," then yes. Yes I do.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

In high school, when there was nothing going on or during study hall, i would watch it on my phone with my earbuds. It's how I watched a majority of shows like Kiznaiver, Rainbow Days, and Guilty Crown (that one I had to be careful though). Nobody really seemed to care..
