Which do you prefer when watching anime? Subtitles or dubs and why?

I personally prefer watching subbed anime, but for some shows (Hetalia, Prison school, Ghost Stories), I prefer watching them dubbed.

Oh look, it's this thread again

Anyway, I'm a proud original audio only fag (AKA I watch everything, not just anime, with the original voices)

That being said, I can acknowledge when a dub is good but there aren't many of them.

Subbed of course. I think like 99.8% of people who have seen 10+ anime prefer sub. The only good dubs I can think of are Cowboy Bebob, Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z and Yu-Gi-Oh! series.

Subs always, and since I haven't seen a decent Spanish dub in a while, I don't have more options. Not that I complaint, subs are master race.

Subbed. I watched a couple of Ghibli films in German but that's it. I don't tend to have problems watching German dubs but with anime I tend to find that girls sound cuter when it's in Japanese so I like to stick with that, plus most German dubs aren't especially good and are more difficult to find on the internet and I'm 99.9% sure that even if I began to seek them out more, I'd still prefer subbed. Not going to be watching any English dubs pretty much ever, though.

But meh. It also creates a feeling of exoticism that I've grown attached to, tbh. I wouldn't be surprised if I started looking at less major-cinematic productions from other countries in original language, but I don't really go seeking out a bunch of cultural films and shows in general and I haven't had the opportunity to test that out.

Always subbed so far. American VAs tend to overact to an annoying extreme, in my opinion. Planning to watch Cowboy Bebop dubbed, though, since even Watanabe prefers the dub.

subs usually, unless it's something I watched as a kid (Pokemon, DBZ, Digimon, Bobobobo)

I also want to watch Ghost stories dub.

I used to try both to see I liked, better, but it was almost always subs. So, I stopped doing that and just watched subs. Though that has led me to watch shows that are known for good dubs like Coboy Bebop and Yu Yu Hakusho subbed because I didn't know the dubs were supposed to be good.

I have weird logic about this xD. Usually when the anime isn't set in Japan i like to see what the dub is like and i end up watching it most of the time, otherwise i usually watch sub xD. So you could say i prefer subs because i watched more shows in subs that i did in dub, although i did rewatch some of them in dub just to see how they were done.

P.S:Watch Sora no Otoshimono in dub. Comedy masterpiece.

Both to be honest .. sometimes the dub can be enjoyable if the voice actors suit their roles like in Fma 2003 and code geass ... but I watch subbed shows most of time cuz it's more comfortable for me

It depends. For a god tier dub like in
Full metal alchemists
Hellsing ultimate.
Drifters.
Jojo's bizarre adventure part 1-3
Dragon ball z
Baccano
Or anything that enters the so bad its good category like the English dub of devil man

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0oyzTFah8w <That dub is a treasure and needs to be preserved

I'd rather watch the dub.

But if the dub is just bad like in the case of
Attack on titan
one punch man
The fan dub of dragon ball super.
Then I'd rather watch the sub.

Dub. Of course. I will always have the same answer in as many iterations of this age-old fight. Anime is an audio-visual medium and I will always prefer the option that enhances the experience. So English dub it is. I'm trilingual going quad and English is not my mother tongue but it might as well be. It's the language I'm most comfortable with. It's the language I connect the most with.

It all comes down to timings. What the dub offers is a situation where the aural and visual parts are on the same beat. In subs, the different ways the English and Japanese language is structured would lead to moments where the subtitle is translating one thing, the original Japanese is saying another, and the visual is favoring the Japanese more.

Either raw or subbed, but subbed seems to be more easily available so I usually watch that. The only time I watch dubbed is when it's shown on TV but since the only 24x7 anime channel in the country was taken down I only watch with Jap audio now. Local dubs are 10x worse.

I only watch Eng dubs.No matter how melodic or talented Japanese VA's are like the people usually say, listening to the language you don't know and then keeping one eye on the subtitles only ruins the experience. Atleast for me that's the case.

- English is not my native
- Nor Japanese
- So sub is the way to go (english sub tho since most local sub sucks)
- It's always best to enjoy anything in it's original form
- I'm learning Japanese so it serve as a little listening practice too

I only watch the highest quality German dubs. But seriously, it depends on the show. There are some few shows where I really like the dub. I mostly hate them though, the FMAB dub was perfect according to me, but the Mirai Nikki dub was awful and I want to kill myself every time i hear someone say it's good.

Subs. I firmly believe that any media is meant to be watched in its original language.

Also, like another user said, spanish dubs (modern dubs anyway) are not very good, and altough I can handle english dubs just fine, I prefer not to.

Either tbh. If a show has a dub I'll probably start with it and decide if I wanna switch to sub or not. I actually started watching Princess Tutu subbed then switched to dub cause Ahiru's Japanese voice was shit.

I generally prefer subs over dubs. One major reason is that the OVAs, specials, and later seasons that come with the franchise usually don't have dubbed versions available. If the dub has a good reputation, then I'll be inclined to watch dubs over subs provided all the franchise entries are dubbed

Dubs. I don't understand what it is about subbers thinking the dialogue in dubs is cheesy but it's usually fine to me. If there's a dub, I'll watch it unless it's absolutely terrible.

For me it's obviously subs. In English dub the voice actors sound really emotionless, they speak like a robot. The Japanese seiyuus do their voice acting with a lot of feeling and emotion and because of that we can feel every situation in an anime.

I just prefer dubs so I don't have to read the words, I'd rather pay attention to other details in the show. But Ill watch sub if that's all there is. Oh, and if the dub voices are annoying as hell (Kokoro Connect)

Dubbed is easier for me to multitask and watch while I'm at work, so that's typically my go-to. If I really enjoy an anime, I'll watch it both subbed & dubbed. The only dub I haven't/probably will never be able to get through is Black Butler, though!
