Heya!
A friend recommended me the monogatari series because he said that "it'll suit my nature" (I don't really know what he meant by that tbh) so started from square one! I know for a fact that the order is up to me, timeline or release, but I just want to know after watching one episode if you guys also pause the video to read the essay-like screen that pops up every 5 seconds.

... or am I just too absorbed in these attention-grabbers?

Mod Edit: Modified title for clarity and/or easier searching.

I also did it in Bakemonogatari, but later I found out that they aren't neccessary to understand the context. They are just thoughts of the person who is talking.

Before starting with the franchise I have researched it quite a lot, and almost always got the recommendation to start in release order (Bakemonogatari first).

The Anime has a unique, almost theatre-like visual style. E.g. you won't see anyone other than the MCs. and the small support cast. Ever. The show also heavily involves (japanese) word plays, metaphors and stuff. Language is important in this series, but you don't need to read every word on-screen to get the plot.

I thought people watch Monogatari for the porn?

You can choose if you want to read the slideshows of not, since they just represents either some of the thoughts of the main character in that scene or the feeling of the scene who is about to happen.
If you are curious enough to want to read it, go ahead, it's interesting and I did the same while watching the anime, but you don't lost anything if you skip them.

pausing the video would make it take a lot longer to finish so no I never did that since I wanted my torment to be over as fast as possible

Pausing is unnecessary since the flash text doesn't really add anything to the experience.

I'll echo everybody else who said it isn't necessary, regardless of what reason you're watching it

Most of the time it's just stuff that can be just as easily inferred by what's going on with the screen, I always kind of felt that the slides were more about style than substance

If you want to pause it and read it then go ahead, if you don't want to you don't have to, so on and so forth

I do not pause it myself. The only time I ever stopped for those was at a certain point in Koimonogatari where Kaiki had this really fast set of slides with his thoughts on Nadeko, and I couldn't get the gist of them as they went in succession because they moved so fast but I like Nadeko as she is best grill, so I went back and looked at them, trying to successfully pause at the right time for each one. Then a few minutes later in the same episode what those slides said was practically explicitly stated, so meh :V

I don't pause for the long paragraphs and I don't feel like I'm losing anything. Though it also helps that I'm a fast reader and can absorb the basic point of them in the few seconds they're on-screen.

I did initially, but eventually stopped pausing and just read what I could before they disappeared. As others have said, they're not essential to the experience.

I haven't skipped a single frame of fast dialogue because I want to know everything, no matter how irrelevant some of the characters' thoughts are. I believe it's at Hanamonogatari where the flashes of text start to diminish.

I honestly don´t care about your question, I just wanted to add that I´m happy someone else is getting into one of my favorite weeb trash shows.

Nevermind, just found out your taste is trash.

Like everyone said before me, completely unnecessary to read them unless you really want to. I love the Monogatari series and it was one of my reasons to thoroughly indulge myself in the Japanese language so that I could understand all the metaphors and play-ons with words they had. I personally don't read the slides though.

They are not that necessary lmao. Just go along and enjoy the series. If you really want to get into that you may as well just buy the novels, which are being licensed and can be bought in Amazon.

Well I think you should read them all. At least you should if you want to see what that char thinks at that moment.

You have a good friend it seems.

Yeah, I try to pause and read everything, however, that's pretty much impossible given the speed that some of it goes by. There is quite a bit of information overload.

I paused to read a few times when starting but quickly gave up. I felt it was too much of a hassle, ruined the immersion and my general enjoyment of the show.
Kind of pissed off they even added so much of it, you feel like you're missing stuff but who the hell wants to press the pause button 20 times each episode.

Pausing makes it longer to finish episodes so I don't do it. It's not like the text is necessarily important to the plot anyway.

Also watch the series in release order. Broadcast order is complicated and confusing. Watch it in this order:
Bakemonogatari
Nisemonogatari
Nekomonogatari Kuro
Monogatari Series Second Season
Hanamonogatari
Tsukimonogatari
Owarimonogatari
Kizumonogatari films (3 films in total)
Owarimonogatari 2 (Summer 2017)
