Hey,
title says it all, i've never seen anything about that series but i pretty much have an idea about what it is. Saw the first episode already and it felt like a new anime and not like i had to watch the prequels. Just like Mushishi.

Mod Edit: Modified title for clarity.

you will lost really plenty characterization... unlike mushishi that fully stand alone apisode excpet few episode, natsume youjinchou still does have continuity...

I highly recommend you to first watch the previous seasons, not only because they are great as standalone ps but also because you get the continuous character development.

But yeah, basically you could watch Natsume Yuujinchou GO without watching the previous seasons, though I don't believe anyone would recommend that..

No. You at least need to watch the entire first season to understand the story...
And other seasons for all the character backgrounds..

Its up to you. But the whole back story, family composition and change of Natsume, Plus the background of his grandmother, and also the other side characters are kinda explained in the other 4.

You'll get a little lost as the characters do not recommend, the sequences are great watch!

Seriously why do people keep asking this?
Watch all the previous seasons! Because you won't enjoy the fifth season at all if you haven't watched the previous seasons.

If you don't want to watch the first seasons, what makes you think you'd suddenly like the 5th one anyway?

I really don't get it

If you like it why would you just want to watch the new show and not watch all the previous ones?

Anime is good, fucking deal with it.

Plot wise - Not really missing that much, they always explain the basic premise in the first episode of each season and it's enough info to go off if you are new to the series.

Characterisation wise - You will be missing out on a lot. Which is why I recommend you watch the all the other seasons first.

What is it about being current that would make someone want to cut corners this badly?

Just watch the first season first dammit, anime isn't like Mario games for god's sake.

Moved from Anime Discussion

Despite not having watching Natsume Yuujinchou, I can't recommend skipping parts like that unless there was some issue of quality or narrative flow, and even then I'd still suggest watching it all for the experience. If you don't have the time or the drive, I'd suggest holding off on the series until you feel up to it.

I mean, it's the 5th season. Why wouldn't you just start at the beginning?

Watch the prequels. It's the best the anime industry has to offer.

The guy is just asking a question, stop biting his head off sheesh.

To the OP, even though Natsume is a slice of life you will benefit a lot from starting at the beginning. There's a cast of re-occurring characters that pop up from time to time and you'll be hopelessly lost if you start on season 5.

I binged the rest of the series just so I could watch this; no regrets. If you start with season 5 you lose a lot character development and backstory for Natsume as well as not knowing the other recurring characters.
