I think all should stop using low case lol

Noone knows why it's there, not even the person who's writing it, but it's there

"I'll be there in a second" doesn't mean exactly 1.0 seconds.

It's a phrase used to convey a generalized message. Not sure why it would be confusing or a big deal lol

It lightens the tone of a sentence. e.g what a dickweed vs. what a dickweed lol.

Although, personally I think everyone should append their sentences with raucous laughter irl.

People generally do it to make the other person not believe they are a robot. Atleast that's why i use it lol.

hm that's true. for example if you want to say "you suck too much" (as in he sucks in a game or something)
it may offend him
but if you add a lol at the end, that wouldn't be so offensive i think

but still, i don't think that's the purpose of lol
just my opinion, it's not like i want people to stop using it but it's kinda funny how people use it even when they aren't actually laughing (well i do that all the time, literally every sentence i type in skype..)

I use it when something is not funny enough to laugh about, but still is kind of amusing.
Or when I can't believe that somebody did something ...
Like:
- oh i accidentally broke her board
- ..lol ... (sometimes it's more like: "loool ??")

Online linguistics is really funny and also really awesome though. How over time people have developed ways to emote their text, it's really cool.

Like how dropping capitalisation makes thing feel more informal/chatty; deliberate misspellings, seemingly nonsensical shitposts, specific punctuations use, emoticons etc. all have meanings, and they serve to define who's in the ingroup and who's the outsider. Ah, wonderful internet.

I use lol when I don't want to be taken seriously.
E.g: Go die in a fire you fucking piece of shit, lol.

It makes everything so positive. :)

Nothing really important, I guess "lol" is used when you just don't want something to sound so serious "like a haha" but doesn't mean it's something you're laughing about. Never really used "LOL" though

Back when I was a high school student (2010-ish), I knew this guy that would actually say 'lol' during conversations in person, or if he experienced something funny. His actual laughter was pretty annoying anyway, so I guess it was for the best. I just find it a bit amusing how Internet slang is making its way into everyday conversations taking place in the physical world. I reckon it's only gotten more prevalent these days.

Online? Nah. Now if we're talking in-person than yea, people shouldn't replace "Lol" with actual laughter. Unless a joke sucks....then by all means, lol away. Lol

There is a comedian Demetri Martin that had something to say about this "Whenever I'm on my computer, I don't type 'lol'. I type 'lqtm': 'laugh quietly to myself'. It's more honest. "

I don't use it, I don't think anyone who uses it actually is laughing, if I laugh at something I usually say I laughed at it otherwise I probably didn't.

i barely use "lol" unless the other person im talking to uses it a lot, just to make them feel more comfortable. i mostly use "lmao" tho.

When texting, I typically always leave a "haha", "lol", or some sort of face in order to just make the text not seem so serious. Whenever I look at my message I always read it in a super serious tone; not overly sure why really.
So I just developed a habit of always adding something to lighten the tone of it.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!

Most people aren't crying when they use ":'(" either. Emoticons convey the person's feelings, and feelings don't always show on your face. People also use them to be satirical (f.e. "oh no Glee was cancelled :''''((((), or to indicate they are not being serious (f.e. "I'm not a loser like you :P").

I think using or not using is fine lol. But not using any emoji or stuff in my personal uses makes the text more awkward. Like this---I was just wondering why people join the cat army. I kill cats for fun.

This. It's just a modern Modal Particle just like how, well, you don't translate every "well" as the Adverb of "good" or "you know" should not be taken literally here and that's just how it is.

The only Flaw I'm seeing with the Usage of this Word as a Modal Particle is, that it's restricted with Online Conversations, because it's too odd to use in spoken Talks, but lol oh well.

I think there is also a cultural variation when denoting the 'meaning' of such a 'lol'. Where I come from, people (including myself) usually use it after making a sarcastic remark. It aids a comment that aims to demean or expose stupidity.

The example you gave is a bit extreme, it's like the person does not know what lol stands for or is being very sarcastic about it.

I do actually use lol a lot when I find something funny/amusing even when I'm not actually "laughing out loud", probably just smiling. #Sue me! #Father I have sinned
