You know, that's a way better idea. Alas, that developer wasn't interested in creating an interesting story that explores the human condition, but in making a big dumb action game. The worst part is that the combat is still pretty terrible in Homecoming in spite of that. It's still not fun, the only difference between the earlier games is that you can now do sick combos and dodge moves.

Aye. The thing that really drew me into Undertale was how it blurred the line between the game itself and reality. It acknowledges that it's a video game, but in doing so it enhanced the significance of its story, rather than trivializing it. By making the player part of its own universe, it encourages you to act how you would in real life. You're not pretending to act out another person's behavior, it's just you. And all of those video game conventions like saving and loading are a tangible part of the world and have a real affect on it, rather than simply being nebulous abstractions.

All of that really adds weight to your actions, and I think it tries to get the player to behave more sincerely than they would in a 'normal' game. I gotta say, that may not have stopped me from doing a Genocide run, but it did get me to feel really guilty about it.

I still wonder what the significance of naming Chara is. I originally took it to mean that Chara is supposed to be the player, their possession of Frisk is them "controlling" them, and that choosing either pacifist or genocide is what shapes Chara's personality. But Chara was implied to be an asshole even before the start of the game, so that theory doesn't really work. The only time that really lines up is in the Genocide route, where that super nihilistic, doesn't-give-a-fuck behavior of Chara's is pretty on-par with how the player would feel.

Neutral and Pacifist endings are mostly the same after doing a Genocide run, except for one thing at the very end, where Frisk is revealed to be possessed by Chara, which basically means that everyone is going to die. So yeah, that's a pretty not great ending.

That being said, I downloaded a thing that removes the Genocide data from my save, so I don't have to deal with that downer ending. Ahaha, I'm a coward!

So there's this Alex Sheperd guy, the embodiment of a generic white guy. He's a soldier who fought in some non-descript conflict because the devs wanted an excuse for making the game more action-oriented. Then you get to the end of the game, and they're like, "Ohhhhh, you weren't a soldier all along, you were a super crazy person who was put in a mental hospital. (which was clearly them attempting to recreate the twist at the end of Silent Hill 2...just ignore the part where the game was more action-oriented because Alex was supposed to be a soldier even though he wasn't.)

And yeah, Pyramid Head shows up at one point for no reason. And in one of the endings, two Pyramid Heads put a helmet on Alex and turn him into another Pyramid Head for...some reason.

But there was one good part of Homecoming, and that was Asphyxia: http://stuffpoint.com/silent-hill-saga/image/197182-silent-hill-saga-silent-hill-homecoming-asphyxia.jpg A great design compared to everything else in the game.

Wait wha? But isn't FF15 a console exclusive?
Abby- Feb 19, 2016 3:15 PM
He totally does. He'll be like, "That's the expression of someone's who's died X times," like the smartass he is. He only does that the first 12 times, if I remember correctly.

Oh man, not Downpour. All I think about is Homecoming. It almost looks like the Downpour guys made an effort when you compare it to Homecoming. I mean sure, the monsters in Downpour were worse, but Homecoming tried SO hard to rip off Silent Hill 2, it was gross.

Yeah, I saw that. You like, switch between weapons for different parts of the combo or something like that, and you can instantly teleport to an enemy from super far away. It looks pretty cool. But I'll probably play it 10 years from now when I finally have a PS4.

I lost count after a while, but I want to say Sans killed me somewhere around 60 times. I'm a masochist though so I enjoyed it. That payoff was so good.

Not close at all. I just finished the forest section...man, this game is kinda turning out to be more shit than I expected. Those floating ghost guys are so annoying and not scary at all. I really want to see it through, though, because you can't really get the full experience from a Silent Hill game by only watching the cutscenes. I'm gonna do it...but ugh.

Another thing that I don't like about the game is how, early on, you're not given any context for the monsters and areas. I read a bit about the game beforehand, so I know it has to do with Walter. But if I didn't know that, there'd really be nothing for me to think about. As far as I'm concerned I went through a subway and an orphanage just for funzies, and these stupid floating ghost guys are just mad that they're a subpar monster design, I guess.

Mhm. That's only obtainable on NG+ though. So that players won't go, "This game is stupid! It's not my fault I killed everything I saw without thinking about it! >:("

FF15? Nah, I don't own a PS4 or Xbone. But it looked kinda intriguing from what I saw of it.

Even though the monsters seem to be just as bad, if not worse than the enemies in Downcoming and Homepour, I can't bring myself to outright hate The Room for some reason. As average as it is, I guess I appreciate that they tried something different with the series, unlike some of the later games which tried desperately to recreate Silent Hill 2. And you know, I do find the first-person segments a bit scary. The parts where you're actually in the room are way more effective than anything else in the game, even though they don't have much interactivity.

It was pretty terrible. I suspect they intentionally made it even more clunky than SH2 to encourage the players to avoid violence altogether, as that's more in line with Heather's personality. I probably killed no more than 15 monsters the last time I played SH3.

At least you get to listen to Spider Dance. =3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tU3el-Kk8Fw Do you have instant noodles? You get a special scene if you use them during that fight.

I'm not even close, man. I just got to the forest world, after watching Not Maria get killed in the subway.

The game certainly doesn't deserve the hate that it gets, but it's the epitome of a 6 out of 10 game. I can feel the mediocrity oozing from it every time I play, which is all the more noticeable considering the quality of its predecessors.

Also fuck those dog enemies. Henry's fat ass can barely hit things that are more than a foot in front of him, and it takes a million years for him to get out of his combat stance, so I'm constantly flailing my weapon around hoping the dogs will run into them. So frustrating. It's crazy that they somehow managed to make the combat -worse- than it was in Silent Hill 3.

How do you do eh? Oink! Oink!

Night!
Abby- Feb 7, 2016 11:35 PM
But Undertale is best experienced without spoilers! Googling will cheapen the experience! (Sans isn't a boss tho)

I saw the two-headed baby monster in the intro, and I thought that one was at least imaginative. But most of them seem to be boring humanoids. No weird vagina monsters or mobile beds symbolizing sexual abuse. Trash!
Abby- Feb 7, 2016 11:12 PM
Is Sans a boss? Nah.

But I found a PS2 demo disk with SH4 on it. :( Little Abby Junior couldn't have known about the spooky old people ghosts and the super scurry dogs with long tongues. Should've been murdering innocent people instead.

The nightmare isn't over yet! Look at this...jabberwocky. http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/silent/images/1/10/Weeping_Bat.png/revision/latest?cb=20150319215338

Speaking of not-scary monsters, these two ghosts in SH4 are so far the lamest enemies I've encountered: http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/silent/images/2/22/EatMeinPipe.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20131015223136

The fact that they're dressed in completely normal clothing and look like typical, out of shape middle-aged people make them so hard to take seriously.

Abby- Feb 7, 2016 10:49 PM
You killed goat mom?! I'm surprised you don't attack everyone you see offline. You never know who might be preparing an attack!

I went into it with hopeful expectations, and I don't think it's too bad so far. It's weird because it was actually the very first Silent Hill game I had ever played, but that was when I was like 5 years old. It scared the shit out of me back then, and that association is making the game feel a lot scarier to me than it actually is. I like the first person apartment sections, they do a good job of capturing the feeling of isolation that Henry is supposed to have. I'm emulating it, by the way. I got an ISO from Emuparadise. Screw spending $40 or more to get a legitimate PS2 copy.

Oh yes, true Silent Hill shit...http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/silent/images/0/07/Juggernaut.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/250?cb=20150510223637

Body-builder monster in sweatpants. Masahiro Ito got nothin' on this.
Abby- Feb 7, 2016 10:20 PM
Hell nah. In almost every game I play, I'll intentionally avoid killing for as long as I can to see if it's doable. I hate when games force me to kill enemies for the most tenuous of reasons. I suppose hearing people talk about the "pacifist ending" before I even started the game helped a bit, but hey...

Wayyyyy harder. Photoshop Flowey was nothing for me, but the Genocide boss took me 3 hours. It's not the same experience if you don't do it yourself, but at least you'll get to hear the best track in the game.

Oh, I started Silent Hill 4 the other day, the only SH game I know almost nothing about, and the one that everyone apparently hates. Have you played that one?
Abby- Feb 7, 2016 10:01 PM
Nah.
Abby- Feb 7, 2016 10:00 PM
STALKER's pretty rad. It's an open-world post-apocalyptic FPS with survival elements, and eastern European jank. They're far from the most well-made games ever, but I mentioned it because they handle the sort of thing Bethesda seems to be going for with Fallout much better. Limited resources, a lonely atmosphere, and challenging, semi-realistic combat against a mix of human enemies and weird mutants.

Nice! I didn't get any LOVE on my first playthrough, so I got both neutral and pacifist on my first run. It's weird to think that people went through that game thinking they were supposed to fight enemies... A couple months later I finally got around to doing the genocide run, and the final boss killed me about 60 times. I highly recommend it!

It's okay though. Bateman's kind words will make you feel better.
