If you saw a large amount of money in public and no one was around would you take it?

If you found a few notes on the floor in public, say $100 or £120 or something, would you keep it?

I figured I'd say a large amount because it's obviously better to have more money, but also because the impact on the other person is greater. That's not just them losing a single note.

If no, why not?

Do you think it is any different from buying something stolen like this?

Yeah, sure. Why not.

It's highly unlikely that the person who lost it will come back to this spot to find it.

What would you say if like in that video I was clearly describing the amount of money I lost? I imagine it would be easy to give me $5 back, but what would you say if I was trying to ask if you'd seen my $100?

I would definitely pick it up, because no one in their right mind would leave money on the ground like that.

Because money is state property and all of us are part of the state. However, if the true owner wants to sue me, sure I will give back his paper.

if the lost property has identification (phone, wallet,id), I will give it back. If he/she found me.

Lol each and every excuse under the sun to manipulate and worm your way out of not having to hand back a larger sum of money.

While others just hold their hands up and admit to it.

Love it

You don't, unless it's a scenario like that video.

You don't justify what you did or play dumb though. If you'll do it discreetly you don't care. If you'll do it anyway you don't care if the owner see's you'll just try and get back home asap. Most of the answers here speak for themselves.

Anything under $100 I'd probably pocket without hesitation.

Of course if you're dumb enough to misplace a much larger amount, I wouldn't feel sorry for you if you lost it, but I'll try my best to return it or simply give it in to authorities. Partly because I've seen No Country for Old Men and I'd be scared as shit.

You can play the hero and avoid confrontation if you give them back the $5. May even get laid.

If they come back saying they dropped more notes I'd probably play it safe and just say I found one, the rest must have been taken or blown away. Then keep the $90 for myself. I can still play the hero, offer comfort and maybe get laid still while stealing their money.

Once I gave it to a friend who was with me and the other time I kept it. I guess I'm lucky

Since I am greedy enough anyway, sure, I wouldn't hesitate nor regret taking the money off the floor.

(It would probably be taken by someone else if I didn't pick it up anyways)

Actually, there was one time where I found $250 on the ground at a bank when I went to withdraw money from an ATM late at night. I took the money and returned the next day, letting the bank staff know that someone might come back looking for the cash. :/

But if this was in the middle of nowhere, I would probably just take the cash, since it's very unlikely I would be able to find the person who dropped it.

If it was a phone or anything with identification in it, then I would definitely try to find the person who dropped it.

I'll probably keep it but not all the time. I do remember finding a wallet which contained $300, 2 credit cards, an ID and a family photo. I wanted to keep it but my other conscience told me to return it. So I did

It depends. If I'm somewhere in a building or right outside one I might go talk to someone and bring it to them to deal with it. But if it's in the middle of the street or something the only thing I can do is ask people around me, and people might just lie so I don't think I could do anything else but take it.

Morality can easily interfere.

You can pick up a note in a crowded place that could have literally just been dropped a few seconds ago by someone you didn't see.

I'd take it. Then I'd donate it. Not just any random non-profit organization or else I'll end up donating to the Jared Foundation or the Catholic Church. Can't choose between the two since they pretty much use the funds on molesting children.
Just need to find out how to quote this every time so I can dodge the stupid 30-character limit.

You've been pretty honest, and this is an interesting answer.

If you'd picked up something specific like two $20 notes and I came by soon after asking if you'd seen them, since you don't know me you'd say you hadn't seen them.

Lets be honest these are all just excuses we make.

If I find a wallet with id, how would me emptying the notes before handing it in be any more immoral than just taking notes on the floor in public? Only because you know someone else will take it.

What's wrong with taking someones phone if you just remove the sim card and leave the sim on the floor? The numbers are on it but you don't know the persons identity. You can rationalise that someone else would have taken the phone, thrown the sim away and sold it.

That's another thing regarding a wallet or phone. If you find one of them and can identify the owner it's easy to return them to their owner but money is another issue, you have no way to identify whose money it was so instead of leaving it there for someone else to take i'd rather take it myself.

A decision like this actually popped up in my life when I was around 13 years old.

I was at Home Depot with my dad and uncle getting ready to check out at the register. I looked down and low and behold a whole wad of cash was just lying there at me feet. $261 to be precise. I picked it up, but instead of pocketing it (like many others would have done, including my dad and uncle) I handed it to the cashier.

Fast forward a month later and I get a phone call from Home Depot saying that the money was never claimed and was now mine to do with as I wish. Needless to say I felt pretty damn awesome that day. I ended up putting the money towards my first computer.

Moral of the story? Honesty always pays off in the end.

I'd take the notes first then hand in the wallet. If there's a certain amount in public not in a wallet then I also don't know if the owner will come back knowing how much they dropped when they took something out their pocket.
In public that note could have just been dropped a couple of minutes ago by someone in a rush.

It's up to the individual to assess the situation, and most here have just been blunt admitting they'd either not give it back, take it discreetly, or take it and spend it asap.
