Your opinion on short anime?(the 5 min per eps kind)

Short anime,do you like them or not?

It seems like these days for every full length series announcement we get, there are like 3 anime shorts announced.(you know the 3-5 min per eps kind)( Now maybe there has always been the same amount of shorts, and we just didn't hear about it,because anime news didn't cover every little thing) But to me it seems like we are getting a lot more short series in recent years.

So,since they are all over the place, whats your opinion on them? Do you like them? Do you think they are a waste of time? Do you think they have become more common? Do you just ignore them?

My opinion: I think that some shorts can be pretty fun.(like Hetalia and Plastic Nee-san are probably my favorites) But I don't like that there are so many of them these days, especially this year. I was a little disappointed to find out that shows like Ameiro Cocoa and Okusama ga Seitokaichou weren't full length.

I think shorts are fine if they are really just gag-after gag that don't require much time. Or if they are made by small/indie animators. I just kind of dislike when they are being used to produce even cheaper anime (mmhhmmm, looking at you, Pupa.) Like it's fine if they make a short show out of a 4-koma gag manga(although I still wouldn't wan't too many of them) but its kind of stupid if they are giving a manga that has enough substance for a normal length show only a 5-minute short because they are cheap af.

I've more or less liked all short-episode anime I've watched (Hetalia, Danna ga, Chii's New Home). They're perfect for the moments you don't have enough attention span for a full episode but still yearn for some animu. They're also very addictive (Hetalia ED 1 has the most addictive song ever) as you keep telling yourself that 'it's only a few minutes, one more'.

Try Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken and the sequel Sure-Me. They made me laugh out loud.

Its nice always nice to have them but it kinda saddens me that some shorts have actually good plots if they stretch them to full length 24 mins anime

I thought the first season of Yami Shibai managed to be genuinely creepy.

And Tonari no Seki-kun is a cute and funny little show. It isn't going to have amazing impact but it is good for a few minutes of silliness.

I'd recommend Pupa. Quite Avant Garde. It virtually satirizes the incest trope in anime throughout its run and its far more mature and coherent than people give it credit for.

I've watched over 30 of them. I tend to give lower ratings to short anime, but Yama no Susume and Tonari no Seki-Kun were both good. I tend to watch several as they air because they feel like nice, short internet animations.

I'm not a big fan of the highly experimental CGI shorts produced these days, but the more classical animated stuff, absolutely. I loved these, especially (if <10min still qualifies):

Destino (2003)
Father and Daughter
El hombre sin sombra
Tezuka Osamu--Mermaid
Duet - Glen Keane
Junichi Yamamoto--Anemone
Invention of Love (2010)

5 minutes is, imo, way too short for an anime. Even full 24-min episodes have a hard time fitting a story into them, and with 5 minute episodes, the story and content is going to be about 1/5 of what it should be. Normally, anime with short episodes have no story, or progress so fast they don't have enough time to add detail and fine-tune it. This results in either a slice-of-life anime with no story and few events, or a sloppy mess of an anime that tries to fit manga-books full of story into less than 2 hours worth of animation.

Probably the worst part of it is, even though it is 5 times shorter, they still release at the same pace as quality, 24 minute anime episodes. Example: Okusama ga Seitokeichou. 5 mins per episode, releases every week, not much difference in quality at all.

I'm fine with short animes as long as the scenario and the genre suits the 5-minute format. That is to say, it should not feel "forced" because there is no budget to make a standard 20-minute anime (or any kinds of other reasons) but because it actually is the most appropriate format.

Pupa was a huge disappointment to me, it turned out to be a succession of gore-ish episodes just for the sake of it without an actual story (it is far from what the manga is).

Though, I recently enjoyed watching Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken and its sequel which were really refreshing and amusing!

Some of them are pretty alright, but generally they don't provide the depth and atmosphere that I'm looking for. They tend to be way too fast-paced for me to get properly immersed, and so on.

Generally I dislike that because if I enjoy the anime I want longer episodes. For example, I really enjoyed Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories, but I thought the episodes should have been longer.

There are some hidden gems among them (short movies especially) and even if they are shit, you don't waste that much time. So I generally like them.

Look for Short episode and Short episodes tags.
You all need to watch Nami.
